Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moldable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Okay, weirder things had happened to Jack than being swept to some airport, wandering onto the shuttle, and then finding out that there was a table with a nametag sitting on it waiting for him. And a sibling assignment. And a room. And a class schedule.

But hey, some Tony kid was assigned to explain what the heck was going on, here? Jack didn't really expect much to come of that, considering he hadn't been seen by mortal eyes in his entire 300 years, but it would probably be interesting to see what happened.

He was looking pretty amused as he wandered around, checking nametags to see which of these poor schmucks had been paired off with the 'imaginary' kid.

Jeremy had slapped his nametag on, and was looking for someone who seemed like a Karina. Or you know, had a nametag that said that.

He was pretty sure Karina was a girl's name, at least, which may have contributed to the brightness of his smile as he looked around.

Evan was bouncing on his toes as he wandered around the picnic, looking for someone who looked like royalty. And it was probably easy enough to assume that it was because he was excited to be paired off with a prince, sure, but mostly it was because he had a sibling at all. The school had given him a responsibility, and now he was going to do the best job at it that he possibly could.

Hopefully he'd put together enough informational materials for his new sibling to really get an idea of what he was getting himself into. His arms were pretty full of printouts from the library about gremlins and weird weather and invasions, but he hadn't been able to find anything about pink ponies anywhere.

Alec had been assigned to a Katherine Bishop, apparently, which was just a tiny bit confusing because he couldn't seem to find anyone by that name. The especially frustrating part was that he knew he'd be mocked endlessly by Jace if it turned out he lost his charge before he even met her, so he was pretty sure he'd be spending the entire picnic looking around.

Gert wasn't sure how she felt about having an older kid assigned to show her around the school, but after all the traveling she'd done this morning, she was less than enthusiastic about things in general. She begrudgingly affixed a name tag to one of the straps of her backpack so this Hanna person could find her, then got to work setting up a water bowl for the seven-foot dinosaur at her side while they looked around.

This was definitely not what she'd been expecting.

Bay had decorated her nametag with a sketch of a bay tree -- you had a lot of extra room on nametags if your name was only three letters, so being artsy definitely helped.

She wasn't quite sure what to expect from this big sibling thing. She really hoped this Karla person wasn't just in it to haze new kids.

Victor had no intention of breaking anybody; he might even make it through an entire conversation without sharing the fact he was a robot.

He stuck his hands in his coat pockets and huddled up a bit against the cold as he looked for Emily. After a day in Malibu, the east coast in January was just unfair.

Stiles had no idea how he ended up with sibling duty after only being here for a semester but he supposed he was qualified for the job. Maybe more than qualified if you also took in Beacon Hills experience.

Let's see if he could find this kid first, then he could judge his big sibling qualifications.

Big siblings? Well, it sounded helpful enough to Maddie, who still half expected this place to be filled with people who'd knock her books out of her arms at every opportunity like a normal school. So sticking a name tag on and trying not to feel too weird wearing it, she started looking for someone named Shira.

Because, really, if someone was going to go to the trouble of giving him a bed to sleep in and somebody to share his room with, Jack, who was looking thoughtfully down at his room key, his staff in his other hand, was going to pretty much need to mess with this guy's head, right?

It was a moral imperative.

Evan had been thrilled to hear that he'd been assigned a new roomie this semester, too! But now he found himself staring at the new roomie listing, baffled.

"... They have me sharing a room with a girl?"

It wasn't that he wasn't aware that this sort of thing happened! Really! It was more that... well... he just hadn't imagined it happening to him. What would his Ma think?!

Emily took a second of silence to thank whatever god she had to thank for being paired with another girl, as it seemed like that wasn't a definite form around here. Then again, she wondered if she would need to get into whatever girls stuff this Karina was into. Emily was so not looking forward braiding someone else's hair or waxing off some girl's legs for the sake of ~friendship~.

Well, the good news (Gert guessed) was at least she'd met Maddie while waiting for the shuttle and knew that she wasn't awful in any obvious way. Plus, Gert wouldn't have to explain about Old Lace since Maddie had already met her.

Still, she couldn't help feeling a little bad that this girl would get stuck with a giant dinosaur living in her room. That couldn't exactly be everyone's dream.

Dave was gone, which meant new roommate time for Topher. "Bay," he muttered as he eyed the list, not sure what to infer from that besides that whoever named this kid had weird taste.

At least it didn't sound like a girl's name?

The name, yes, was wildly unfamiliar to Po; fortunately enough, so were all the others. If he'd realized that the name beside his was a feminine one, he might have been mildly alarmed. For right now, though, he simply looked around the same way he had when searching for Evan, and kept his mind open to anyone calling for his full name in theirs.

Pinkie could barely contain her excitement (and honestly, wasn't trying that hard). Here she was, all set to start a new semester with one her best friends on the island as a coteacher, plus she got to get yet another new teaching buddy! She was practically vibrating, standing with a giant, brightly colored "WELCOME!" sign attached to a harness on her back and her wagon set up next to her. Every now and then, she bounced up to see if she could spot her new teaching buddy through the crowd.

She wondered if she put the confetti and the cake in the right places this time. Ah well, she'd find out when she sang the welcome song!

Kaidan was just sticking to his normal Alliance casuals today - no need to get the dress uniform back out. He was still in reasonably good spirits, which meant he was, for the most part, holing up somewhere near the center of the picnic. Keeping his eyes out for whoever this 'John Constantine' guy was.

Jono had actually dragged himself to the picnic today, crutches and all, with something that at least passingly resembled a smile on his face. After all, it was the new semester, and after all his years on the island, he'd been through a good many of these. He was pretty certain he'd seen the island as about as crazy as it could get.

He had parked himself off to the side, sitting on a park bench with his crutches propped up on it beside him, and was idly sipping from a cup of coffee. So far, this new batch of students wasn't hurting his brain. That was a good sign.

Josh and his giant cup of Starbucks coffee (brought from DC--it wasn't that he didn't trust the stuff from the Perk, it was that he needed some coffee to get him from his apartment with Donna to the school) made his way over to where the grown ups seemed to be sequestered.

"Please don't let me recognize any of the students," he chanted quietly to himself.

Steve was here to greet the students and teachers, both new and old. He was keeping an eye out for his assigned 'buddy,' but for some reason he suspected she wouldn't need much in the way of orientation...
