Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with ~~moldable~~ warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Pinkie waved excitedly at the new person. "Hi hi hi hi! Welcome to Fandom, I'm Pinkie Pie, what's your name?"

"Maddie," she said slowly. "Okay, this is probably a weird question, but... are you really a pink pony?"

It was possible she'd totally lost it, she knew. She could be imagining all of this as some kind of self-protection thing. Like you see the worst thing ever and surround yourself with nice people and non-murderous dinosaurs and pink ponies.

Pinkie looked down at her hooves. She twisted her head to look at her back and flicked her tail around. She looked up at her ears, then finally produced a hand mirror out of nowhere -- her hoof wrapped around the handle like rubber -- and checked her reflection, giving herself a broad grin. "Yep!" she said finally. "I'm the pinkest pony around! Are you really a red-maned human?"

Oh god this was the best thing ever. PINK PONY HOLDING A MIRROR WHAT.

"I was when I looked in the mirror this morning," she nodded.

Pinkie spun the mirror around. "Do you wanna check?"

"Can I?"

It was just a mirror, Maddie, and the level of excitement there was out of proportion to the actual item.

She looked in the mirror, figured out she didn't look any different than usual, and said, "Yep, still a human."

"That's good!" Pinkie said, tucking the mirror back into . . . wherever it had come from. "Sometimes around here people wake up and they're totally different for a few days, so it's always nice to double check!"

"Totally different how?"

Oh, god, she was going to find this out from Pinkie. Everyone take a moment to place your bets on whether she left this conversation believing it.

Well, at least it'd be really memorable?

"Sometimes all the girls wake up as boys. Or the boys as girls! And students sometimes turn into furry animals or scaly animals or feathered animals for a few days. And sometimes you wake up and THINK everything's different even though it's not. And sometimes all the humans wake up as ponies! Those are my faaaaaaaaavorites."

Maddie listened, and frowned, and said, "Okaaaaaaaaaay," like she wasn't sure how serious that was.

She had once walked around with the body of her thirty-year-old self, there was room to question.

"Oh! And there's these things called gremlins that are all scales and teeth and grrrrrr except sometimes when they go caroling and when they bite you you think you're someone else and then usually you're reeeeeeeeeeeeeeally embarrassed."

Maddie wasn't sure she bought any of this, but that still made her shake her head and say, "I'd rather skip those."

"Good plan," Pinkie said enthusiastically. "So are you a student?"

"A junior, yeah," she smiled. "You too?"

"Oh no, silly!" Pinkie said. Because it was totally silly that this person who didn't previously know that pink ponies existed wouldn't be able to tell that she was an adult pink pony. "I'm a teacher! My friend Derek and I are going to teach about the magic of friendship."

"Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't mean..." Right, just going to gloss over the student thing for now. "I didn't realize that was a class."

Not that she expected a pony to be teaching algebra, but.

"Well, it's a really important subject."

"It is," Maddie said, realizing that was actually true. "More places should probably have it."

Later she was going to imagine Jenny trying to take that class and that would get her through the weirdness of her first day.

Pinkie would be proud to know that.

"So are you looking forward to starting school this week?"

"Sort of?" Maddie said, trying to be enthusiastic. "I mean, it's school. No offense or anything. You know, as a teacher."

"Well, this school isn't anything like the school back in Ponyville. Maybe it's different from school where you're from, too."
