Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moldable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Bay had an awesome name, thank you very much. And was very much a girl.

She overheard the boy muttering and eyed him. "That's me. Are you .... Topher?"

She sounded like she wasn't sure what to make of that. Coed rooms were just weird.

"Yes," he said slowly, eyeing her. "You're a girl."

Also said nice and slowly, because yes, he was displeased with the coed rooming situation, but he also didn't know yet whether she was one of those girls who could beat him up.

"And you're observant," Bay said. "I would think this was some bizarro mix-up, except for how it sounds like everybody else is having this exact same conversation."

The school liked to throw people in the deep end, it seemed.

"I'm a genius, so yeah," Topher said reflexively. Everyone needed to know that, okay? Everyone. "They do boy-girl roommates here. I just never had one before until Dave left."

And now he was scowling a bit, because damn it, Dave, see what horrors your departure had brought?

Bay was asking the important questions. Mostly because she couldn't believe this guy was seriously describing himself as a genius.

"Ex-roommate," Topher clarified. "He drank a lot of coffee. I think he was from Canada."

No, Topher, Wisconsin was not Canada.

"Huh." Being from Canada and drinking coffee were really not that interesting, as descriptions went, so Bay shrugged and moved past it. "So ... I have a brother, so it's not like sharing space with a guy freaks me out. It's just the same-room thing is gonna be new."

"Can we have a 'change in the bathroom' rule?" Topher asked hopefully. "I've been doing that since sophomore year anyway, so..."

Topher was Weird, Bay. Weird.

"Oh god yes," Bay said, without even needing to think about it. "No offense. I just really don't need to see random guys naked."

She frowned thoughtfully, then added, "Do the rooms have private bathrooms, or do I have to lug my crap down the hall every morning?"

"The second one," he answered. "It's not that far, though. I don't think it is, anyway." He tilted his head thoughtfully. "I'm actually not sure where the girls' one is."
