Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moldable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change, but the list had been posted for everyone to see at one of the tables:

Because, really, if someone was going to go to the trouble of giving him a bed to sleep in and somebody to share his room with, Jack, who was looking thoughtfully down at his room key, his staff in his other hand, was going to pretty much need to mess with this guy's head, right?

It was a moral imperative.

"Jack Frost?" Sorry, Jack. He was talking to the list and not you. Because vampires, suuuure. A giant dinosaur, getting kind of iffy. The anthropomorphic personification of wintertime fun, kinda pushing it.

"Oh, come on," Jack leaned up riiight behind the boy that had just said his name, grinning, "it's not that hard to believe, is it?"

... That was a bit of a rhetorical question, considering he'd only met one person ever that wasn't an anthropomorphic personification or a legend himself that could see him, and all.

Hey! It was an awesome name! And it was short for Jackson. That wasn't unfortunate, was it? Was it?

Maybe a little, huh?

"Okay," Jack said, pacing back and forth behind Charley, "a few ground rules. First, no complaining that it's cold in our room, okay? Because I don't have any body heat. At all. You're going to have to get more blankets than the other kids around here. And no letting other people take my bed just because you can't see me. Just because you don't believe in fun doesn't mean I'm not real. If I come back to the room and I see someone sleeping in my bed, I totally reserve the right to put ice cubes under the covers with them."

A beat.

"And in exchange, you can have my closet. It isn't like I own anything, anyhow."

It was easy to be long-winded and snarky when the person you were talking to couldn't see or hear you.

Evan had been thrilled to hear that he'd been assigned a new roomie this semester, too! But now he found himself staring at the new roomie listing, baffled.

"... They have me sharing a room with a girl?"

It wasn't that he wasn't aware that this sort of thing happened! Really! It was more that... well... he just hadn't imagined it happening to him. What would his Ma think?!

Emily took a second of silence to thank whatever god she had to thank for being paired with another girl, as it seemed like that wasn't a definite form around here. Then again, she wondered if she would need to get into whatever girls stuff this Karina was into. Emily was so not looking forward braiding someone else's hair or waxing off some girl's legs for the sake of ~friendship~.

"Well, it could be worse."

Karina laughed, overhearing the other girl. "That's optimistic!"

She ran her finger down the room assignments. "Though, wow, lots of boy-girl pairings. That's weird."

"I try to be a half full glass kind of girl whenever I can." She smiled back as she remembered seeing her as they arrived.

"Apparently gender equality runs big in here? I'm glad it's not a boy though; it somehow always ends with embarrassing situations."

Well, the good news (Gert guessed) was at least she'd met Maddie while waiting for the shuttle and knew that she wasn't awful in any obvious way. Plus, Gert wouldn't have to explain about Old Lace since Maddie had already met her.

Still, she couldn't help feeling a little bad that this girl would get stuck with a giant dinosaur living in her room. That couldn't exactly be everyone's dream.

At least Maddie knew how to find Gert! Even if she hadn't been expecting a roommate and had kind of gotten used to having space just for herself and where did a dinosaur sleep, anyway? And ugh, she'd have to get into the whole powers thing sooner than she thought...

"So I guess we're roommates," she said, trying to seem more upbeat and less unsure about this.

"Looks like," Gert agreed. "And Old Lace, unless the room's too small. If she won't fit, I can figure something out, I guess, but otherwise... do you mind?"

It didn't seem weird to Gert, who just shook her head. "She can curl up wherever," she promised. "The last place we were living had beds big enough for her and me to share, but I don't think that's going to be possible in dorm beds. The floor'll work."

She swung her arms a little awkwardly. "I haven't exactly shared a room before."

Dave was gone, which meant new roommate time for Topher. "Bay," he muttered as he eyed the list, not sure what to infer from that besides that whoever named this kid had weird taste.

At least it didn't sound like a girl's name?

Bay had an awesome name, thank you very much. And was very much a girl.

She overheard the boy muttering and eyed him. "That's me. Are you .... Topher?"

She sounded like she wasn't sure what to make of that. Coed rooms were just weird.

Also said nice and slowly, because yes, he was displeased with the coed rooming situation, but he also didn't know yet whether she was one of those girls who could beat him up.

"And you're observant," Bay said. "I would think this was some bizarro mix-up, except for how it sounds like everybody else is having this exact same conversation."

The school liked to throw people in the deep end, it seemed.

"I'm a genius, so yeah," Topher said reflexively. Everyone needed to know that, okay? Everyone. "They do boy-girl roommates here. I just never had one before until Dave left."

And now he was scowling a bit, because damn it, Dave, see what horrors your departure had brought?

The name, yes, was wildly unfamiliar to Po; fortunately enough, so were all the others. If he'd realized that the name beside his was a feminine one, he might have been mildly alarmed. For right now, though, he simply looked around the same way he had when searching for Evan, and kept his mind open to anyone calling for his full name in theirs.

Being a fawn (and sometimes a badger or a puppy) wasn't going to keep Sholeh away from the picnic! There were new people to meet and new foods to try and all sorts of things to see and do and learn! The picnic was the best part of Fandom--other than the library and the classes and all.

Trouble broke out when she noticed her name on a list. Specifically, the roommate list. Specifically saying she had one.

This was...kind of not good for three girls pretending to be one sister. Huh.

=What kind of name is 'Greening Grandemalion' anyway?= Zeela snarked.

*No weirder than 'Sholeh Zeela a Zhahar,'* Zhahar retorted.

::How come neither of you are paying attention to the 'Prince' part?:: Sholeh demanded, sounding a little panicky. ::He's a boy!::

Well. That was new.

Po had never heard voices argue in his head, as though they could hear each other. Perhaps it was a Grace he'd never encountered, shared across...what sounded like three young women?

He tried not to actually look around as though he'd heard them, particularly since he was vaguely concerned about the deer that had wandered up. A deer this close to people. This Fandom was full of magic he'd never yet seen in any of the Seven Kingdoms, and he peered over at the deer.

"Bold little thing, aren't you?" he murmured, cautious lest he scare it off. The three girls arguing over him in his brain could wait, perhaps.

Sholeh turned to glance at whoever was talking to her. She was used to people just assuming she was a student; by the end of a semester, most people had accepted animal transformations as par for the course. Perhaps it would set him at ease if she proved she wasn't actually a deer?

Taking a step closer to him, she bleated. And wagged her tiny fawn tail.

That was very close to 'I'm actually a student transformed into a weird animal because the island is full of whimsy and magic' ...right?

Po cautiously reached a hand out so she might sniff it, because even if this little fawn was behaving oddly, it wasn't every day he had one come this close.

"Hey, there," he said softly. "Maybe you can help me find my roomm -- you're not normally a deer?"

...he'd rather intended to not actually verbalize things he heard in his mind quite this early, but perhaps he could play it off?
