Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moldable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Oh, I can handle it," Maddie said, even though she wasn't entirely sure about that. "Do we need a third bed?"

That was probably a weird question. That was a weird question, wasn't it?

It didn't seem weird to Gert, who just shook her head. "She can curl up wherever," she promised. "The last place we were living had beds big enough for her and me to share, but I don't think that's going to be possible in dorm beds. The floor'll work."

She swung her arms a little awkwardly. "I haven't exactly shared a room before."

"Me, either. So at least we've got that in common?" It probably wouldn't make things easier, per se, but it was something to bond over.

Or something.

"Yeah," Gert agreed. "I mean, I've done the communal living thing--" in a cave, as one did-- "but I'm kind of accustomed to having my own door."

She shrugged. "It can't be too hard if spoiled rich kids all across the country manage to do it."

"And maybe we can do something about that, like put a curtain in the middle of the room for when we need out privacy," Maddie suggested.

Because if she ever reformed in the room it would be embarrassing for her and probably traumatizing for Gert and neither one of them needed that. And who knew what Old Lace would think of it.

"Works for me." Yeah, Gert had zero interest in changing in front of other people. "And you should get first dibs on a bed, since..." She gestured to Old Lace.

Gert would inevitably wind up taking up more space in the room than Maddie, so it was only fair.

"Oh. Thanks," she said, still more than a little weirded out that everyone was nice, especially when they came with dinosaurs. "And I don't take up a lot of room or anything. Everything I have is in one bag."

Which is what happened when your home got totally destroyed and then you ran away.

"Same," Gert said, patting a backpack strap. After living on the run for months, by the time she'd finally been allowed to go back to her house to get some things to bring to Fandom, her instinct had been to pack light. She still wasn't a hundred percent sure she'd be staying here, after all. "Maybe I'll manage to keep my room clean for once in my life."
