Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moldable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Pinkie could barely contain her excitement (and honestly, wasn't trying that hard). Here she was, all set to start a new semester with one her best friends on the island as a coteacher, plus she got to get yet another new teaching buddy! She was practically vibrating, standing with a giant, brightly colored "WELCOME!" sign attached to a harness on her back and her wagon set up next to her. Every now and then, she bounced up to see if she could spot her new teaching buddy through the crowd.

She wondered if she put the confetti and the cake in the right places this time. Ah well, she'd find out when she sang the welcome song!

Josh stopped to stare. "New school mascot?" he wondered.

Yes, he'd taught vampires the last time, but a talking pink pony? Riiiiight.

It said something that seeing dinosaurs weren't a big deal, but seeing a pink pony was the thing that made Maddie stop in her tracks and say, "Oh my god."

It should be mentioned that Maddie was totally that girl with unicorn posters on her wall. Her inner five-year-old was throwing a party right now. Actually, so was her inner sixteen-year-old.

Kaidan was just sticking to his normal Alliance casuals today - no need to get the dress uniform back out. He was still in reasonably good spirits, which meant he was, for the most part, holing up somewhere near the center of the picnic. Keeping his eyes out for whoever this 'John Constantine' guy was.

Jono had actually dragged himself to the picnic today, crutches and all, with something that at least passingly resembled a smile on his face. After all, it was the new semester, and after all his years on the island, he'd been through a good many of these. He was pretty certain he'd seen the island as about as crazy as it could get.

He had parked himself off to the side, sitting on a park bench with his crutches propped up on it beside him, and was idly sipping from a cup of coffee. So far, this new batch of students wasn't hurting his brain. That was a good sign.

Jack waved a greeting before sitting down next to Jono. "You're supposed to orient me to teaching," he said. "I hope the crutches aren't a classroom injury. That might put me off it."

Anakin was there after another successful shuttle run back from the airport (though those riding with him might disagree with that assessment), glancing around the crowd for familiar faces.

Would an older familiar face do? Hopefully, because Zoe wasn't about to miss saying hello to Anakin. "So, I see the new students made it here in one piece," she said conversationally, although she might have been grinning more than was usual for her.

Josh and his giant cup of Starbucks coffee (brought from DC--it wasn't that he didn't trust the stuff from the Perk, it was that he needed some coffee to get him from his apartment with Donna to the school) made his way over to where the grown ups seemed to be sequestered.

"Please don't let me recognize any of the students," he chanted quietly to himself.

Natalie wasn't a teacher or even an adult, though she was looking for one.

Not this particular one, but her attention was caught all the same. "Well, that's promising."

Steve was here to greet the students and teachers, both new and old. He was keeping an eye out for his assigned 'buddy,' but for some reason he suspected she wouldn't need much in the way of orientation...

No, Zoe probably didn't need much orientation, but she was still glad to see Steve nonetheless. "I was hoping my day today would start out with a familiar face," she said once she'd spotted him and made her way over. "How have you been?"

Derek was just going to lurk over in the most shadow-iest, corner-iest area of the picnic. Because this wasn't really his scene.

His scene was a burned out house full of emotional pain and guilt.

His scene kind of sucked.

"They make you teach now?" Jaye asked. "I mean, hi, teaching buddy."

She didn't know Derek well or anything, but something told her he wasn't doing this because he really cared about the well-being of teenagers.

Jaina knew this might very well be her last picnic, but as she'd thought that like three times in previous years, she stopped really dwelling on that because she'd probably always be a little bit wrong there. So instead, it was a continued watching for people that she might know just in case it broke her brain, and this time watching out for her teaching buddy.

So far her brain was fine.

Jack hadn't spent much time on the picnics since he graduated; even when he was on the island, they seemed not for him.

But now that he was teaching, he was mildly amused by the opportunity to go and try to seem a responsible adult. He sipped from a cup of coffee as he prepared to greet people.

Coming back to Fandom had been a bit of a whirlwind trip - making sure everything at the house was still in one piece, convincing the school board to let her come back (which, admittedly, had been easier than Zoe expected) - but now Zoe was ready to see what, if anything, had changed since she'd been gone. Grace was working her way through the food, and Zoe almost--almost--felt like she didn't need to keep an eye on her. It was kind of nice, really.

The last time Clint had been to one of these things, he'd snuck in for food and then lurked around the outside. Now, he felt like he actually had to stay with the crowd, and it was making him kind of nervous. One of these days, he really was going to have to learn the basics of group social interaction.

Right, John was just going to wander around and smoke. Because, well, there were a lot of kids about, and he wasn't exactly feeling social after being stuck on a bus with a lot of them.

Jaye, being Jaye, wouldn't mind if a few brains broke because it made these sorts of things a lot more entertaining.

Which would be why she had her camera just in case. This would also be why you should all be ashamed of yourselves for allowing her to hang around the impressionable youth.
