Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with ~~moldable~~ warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Pinkie could barely contain her excitement (and honestly, wasn't trying that hard). Here she was, all set to start a new semester with one her best friends on the island as a coteacher, plus she got to get yet another new teaching buddy! She was practically vibrating, standing with a giant, brightly colored "WELCOME!" sign attached to a harness on her back and her wagon set up next to her. Every now and then, she bounced up to see if she could spot her new teaching buddy through the crowd.

She wondered if she put the confetti and the cake in the right places this time. Ah well, she'd find out when she sang the welcome song!

Josh stopped to stare. "New school mascot?" he wondered.

Yes, he'd taught vampires the last time, but a talking pink pony? Riiiiight.

"Omigosh, where?!" said the pony, spinning in place to see the new mascot.

"Oh. My. God.," Josh replied. "Are you a robot?"

Pinkie laughed. "No, silly," she said. "I'm a pony! You can tell 'cause I'm pink and I have a cutie mark and I'm all pony shaped!"

Duh.

"You could be a pony-shaped robot...why am I even having this conversation?" Josh asked the sky.

"Hi there," he said. "Josh Lyman, remembering vividly how this island works."

"Oh oh oh!" Pinkie stuck out her hoof. "I'm Pinkie Pie, your new teaching buddy! Isn't that exciting?!"

Josh blinked at the hoof before shaking it. "Of course you're my teaching buddy. Because that's how it works here. Hi."

"That it is! It was really weird when I first got here, too. I thought you all were hairless bears!"

"Close," Josh said. "We're more hairless apes, unless you talk to some of the right wing evangelical nutjobs, but I wouldn't subject you to that."

Though it would be funny...

Someone would have to take a picture of it. And possibly post it on the internet with the caption "where is your god now?"

"I thought you were called 'humans'?" Pinkie asked, confused. "Everypony corrects me on that all the time."

"Um."

Yeah, Karina was staring.

"Are you real?"

Dinosaurs, at least, had existed once upon a time.

"Yes," Pinkie said, staring back. "Are you?"

It only seemed polite.

"Last I checked," Karina said, blinking hard. "Um."

Shit, she should probably apologize or something.

"Sorry. It's just that... you're a pony. I've never met a talking one before."

"I get that a lot. Ponies in human worlds must be really boring!"

It said something that seeing dinosaurs weren't a big deal, but seeing a pink pony was the thing that made Maddie stop in her tracks and say, "Oh my god."

It should be mentioned that Maddie was totally that girl with unicorn posters on her wall. Her inner five-year-old was throwing a party right now. Actually, so was her inner sixteen-year-old.

Pinkie waved excitedly at the new person. "Hi hi hi hi! Welcome to Fandom, I'm Pinkie Pie, what's your name?"

"Maddie," she said slowly. "Okay, this is probably a weird question, but... are you really a pink pony?"

It was possible she'd totally lost it, she knew. She could be imagining all of this as some kind of self-protection thing. Like you see the worst thing ever and surround yourself with nice people and non-murderous dinosaurs and pink ponies.

Pinkie looked down at her hooves. She twisted her head to look at her back and flicked her tail around. She looked up at her ears, then finally produced a hand mirror out of nowhere -- her hoof wrapped around the handle like rubber -- and checked her reflection, giving herself a broad grin. "Yep!" she said finally. "I'm the pinkest pony around! Are you really a red-maned human?"

Oh god this was the best thing ever. PINK PONY HOLDING A MIRROR WHAT.

"I was when I looked in the mirror this morning," she nodded.

Pinkie spun the mirror around. "Do you wanna check?"

"Can I?"

It was just a mirror, Maddie, and the level of excitement there was out of proportion to the actual item.

She looked in the mirror, figured out she didn't look any different than usual, and said, "Yep, still a human."

"That's good!" Pinkie said, tucking the mirror back into . . . wherever it had come from. "Sometimes around here people wake up and they're totally different for a few days, so it's always nice to double check!"

"Totally different how?"

Oh, god, she was going to find this out from Pinkie. Everyone take a moment to place your bets on whether she left this conversation believing it.

Well, at least it'd be really memorable?

"Sometimes all the girls wake up as boys. Or the boys as girls! And students sometimes turn into furry animals or scaly animals or feathered animals for a few days. And sometimes you wake up and THINK everything's different even though it's not. And sometimes all the humans wake up as ponies! Those are my faaaaaaaaavorites."
