Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moldable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Except there's no way I ever could have called you Professor Priest and not laughed," Karla said. "I'm pretty sure students aren't supposed to know that their teachers exchange tasteful Instagram pics with their girlfriends, either."

Jack pinkened slightly. "We wouldn't do it if she didn't live in New York," he claimed. "My delightful significant other didn't take it into her head to show you any of the pictures, did she?"

They were more soft R than NC-17, but Jack still wouldn't have been able to look Karla in the eye if she'd seen them.

"Would Emma do that?" Karla asked, knowing exactly how not-useful a question that was.

She really hadn't, but there was no harm in teasing Jack about it for a few moments was there? Especially since he wasn't her teacher.

"If she thought it was funny, yes she would," Jack said placidly. "But I'm going to pretend not answering and no are the same thing."

"I heard about those pictures that weekend you were all teensy and flirty," Karla said, still not answering entirely. "I mean, more flirty than you are now."

Flirty in that way that he didn't mean it, right now. Though with the conversations that Emma and Karla had had...

Jack snorted. "I was entirely pure," he said. "And had a guardian who seemed to dedicate his life to keeping me from getting anywhere near changing that. I had to flirt when I got the chance, just for the practice of it. I didn't expect you to take any real interest."

"Well, of course I couldn't," Karla said, fluttering her lashes at him. "You were entirely too young to take a real interest in. Which was why Emma ended up wailing at me about accidentally telling younger you about those pictures!"

She figured he was likely certain by now that she had not yet seen them, so Karla didn't mind adding, "I tried to convince her that she should show them to me since she was already corrupting your wee and innocent mind with them, but she was heartless and refused."

"Damn her," Jack said, not even trying to hide his relieved smile. He'd been almost certain, but it was nice of Karla to confirm it anyhow. "You've turned into quite a terrible flirt yourself, you know."

It was like watching his baby bird leave the nest!

"I learned it from watching you," Karla teased, finally having seen that little bit of culture on the internets. "It's easier to flirt while having a Warren, I think. I don't have to worry about, well, worrying about anything."

Jack didn't understand it at first, but when he thought about it he did. "Like how I could do whatever I wanted when I was younger, because I knew and I made my lovers know that Sebastien always came first," he suggested. "Is that about it?"

How could he have been confused by that? Karla had been so clear!

"I think so," she said. "I just don't have to worry about it going anywhere or being misunderstood. So now I can just flirt for the fun of it and not stress about what might possibly come of it."
