Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moldable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Josh burst out laughing. "Model UN? I don't remember the pony delegation the last time I staffed the President in New York when he spoke before the General Assembly--" see how smoothly he just name-dropped like that? "--so I'll have to pay more attention next time."

Natalie was kind of the wrong audience for that kind of name-dropping. She'd acted as an interpreter between the president of Haiti and his advisor far in the future. Her expression didn't change.

"Wasn't my class, so I don't know how much it had to do with reality anywhere in the universe."

"I haven't been here in a while, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say probably...not much," Josh decided.
whenshewasnice: (Indifferent attention.)

"Probably not," Natalie agreed. After a pause, she decided to stick out her hand. "Natalie Adams."

Because she may have been mild-mannered, but she still had manners, and she was obviously talking to a new-old teacher. Might as well be nice.

"Josh Lyman," Josh replied, shaking her hand. "Former Chief of Staff to President Matt Santos. Now I'm teaching public speaking."
whenshewasnice: (Hang out with a starlet.)

"Never heard of him," Natalie said. "Of course, I'm Canadian, and I only really pay attention to Haitian politics from some centuries away. I'm also in your class."

"A Canadian interested in Haiti? Huh," Josh said. "I'm not sure I know a lot of Haitians interested in Haiti..."
whenshewasnice: (The lit student.)

"These Haitians are." But they were also way in the future. Things were different. "Their leaders are, anyway."

"Well, the leaders should be," Josh said, "or else you've got a whole other set of problems. So, Natalie Adams, why are you taking public speaking?"
whenshewasnice: (Considerable I guess.)

"Because it's something I don't particularly like," Natalie said, because honesty was the best and only policy. "But which I know will turn out to be useful eventually."

"You'll eventually have to talk to other people," Josh agreed, "even if it's just trying to tell people in a bar to shut up so you can watch the State of the Union address."

Josh was quite a party person.

"I would never be in that situation." You know. In a bar, trying to watch anything important. "But yes. Something like that."

Oh, hey, Natalie did actually emote! Fancy that.

Well, her eyebrows bounced a bit. It was a lot compared to everything else, okay. She just hadn't expected that. "... Sure."

"Good," Josh said. "I like my coffee black."

He remembered one very bad hungover morning and the coffee Donna had brought him.

"Also hot. And from today."

"From the day you're drinking it on," Natalie corrected, back to her perfect deadpan. "Because I could use that to bring you coffee from today on Tuesday."

Josh snapped as he pointed to her. "Yes, that thing," he said. "Fresh, delicious coffee. Not the other one."

"Okay, I'll keep that in mind." Lest he go insane without his caffeine, or something. "Fresh, hot, black coffee, got it."
