Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moldable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"And I'm not even the one walking with assistance," Jack sighed, eyeing the crutches again. "So we're both fantastically ancient. I can't remember, did you graduate with my class, or Emma's?"

"At this point, I'm not even certain I'd consider it 'walking,'" Jono admitted, glancing down at his leg. "It's more like very careful one-footed hopping with the crutches there to keep me from toppling over."

The joy of mangling your left leg and left arm. All of your balance was suddenly and thoroughly shot.

"And I graduated from Emma's, mate. She was valedictorian that year, if I remember right. Made one hell of a speech about being strong, about being fighters. I was prom king." A beat. "There might've been something in the water that year, I'm not sure."

"You have a better memory than I do," Jack admitted. "I barely remember who my valedictorian was, let alone anyone else's. Seems like it's been longer than it was."

He frowned vaguely at Jono. "Magic can't heal you?"

"It's difficult to forget your valedictorian when it's Emma Frost," Jono pointed out. "She'd never let me live it down if I did."

Especially since he went straight from Fandom to the Massachusetts Academy, where an older Emma was headmistress.

"I don't see why magic couldn't heal me," he added, a moment later. "I just haven't actually seen a healer since this whole mess happened. The doctors in New York did a decent job of patching me up, all things considered."

"Ronan got me back on my feet after the attack," Jack explained. "Not that he's around anymore, but Karla still is."

He let it go at that, rolling his shoulders in thought. "Anyhow, is there anything to know about teaching besides 'encourage the children not to let themselves get killed'?"
furnaceface: (Just Like That)

"Karla still is," Jono echoed, nodding thoughtfully. She'd been away for the holidays, but he was pretty sure he'd seen her flitting about the picnic somewhere. Maybe he'd call her and beg or something before his first class on Friday.

Or maybe he'd continue to be stubborn. Options were a beautiful thing.

"I think any other advice I could present to you would be more or less comparable to strategies for dealing with rampaging bears," he added, smirking. "Don't let them see weakness, don't turn your back on them, always keep your food out of reach..."

"If they charge at you, hold your arms out so you seem bigger?" Jack smirked. "I think I can handle it, though hopefully that bit won't be necessary."

"And the administration generally frowns on teachers giving attacking students a good solid bop to the tender flesh of their nose," Jono added, almost thoughtfully. "But even with all that in mind, I think you'll do well enough as a teacher, mate. And if they do get out of hand, feel free to talk to me any time. I'm not exactly difficult to catch up to."

... Not wholly because of the injuries.

"Of course. We should hang out more than we do anyhow," Jack said. "The gradtuates who stayed on to teach are an elite group, after all."

Which reminded him he needed to check in with Jaina sometime.

"Of course. We're a better class of masochist," Jono smirked. "It hardly gets more elite than this. But if you want to hang out more, that can be arranged. I haven't been doing much but reading, anyhow."

Well, reading, and attempting to train in spite of his injuries. But one of those things was less likely to get him yelled at by various people both on the island and off.

"I have the club and school," Jack said. He was possibly being optimistic about what he could accomplish, yes. "Are you still doing theater things too, or is that on hold?"

"I'm planning on holding auditions for The Consequence of Being Frank either next week or th'week after," Jono replied with a shrug. "We'll see how I'm feeling, and how our first improv class goes, and go from there."

Jono really wasn't certain what had possessed him to run a class at the school and a community class, on top of directing a show in the theatre and doing radio broadcasts, but, if nothing else, keeping busy would keep him from going insane.

Probably.

"I don't stagnate well," he explained.

Jack nodded his respect. "I love Wilde, but I think I'm done acting," he said, not without some wistfulness. He'd enjoyed being in plays in high school; he just didn't see rehearsals fitting into his schedule anymore.

"But I know what you mean. Not to be strange about it, but I should have died -- more than once -- and I haven't. It seems like a waste not to keep myself busy."

"That's precisely it," Jono replied, nodding. "I should be dead a dozen times over by now, for as many different reasons. If I'm still here... I have to make use of that."

Which was why he kept going back to New York and getting into the sort of trouble that had ripped him up in the first place.
