Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with ~~moldable~~ warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Wait, there is a bar that doesn't card?"

Dammit Emily, don't be so delighted about that! Back to business.

"Well, I think I can get behind the idea of alternate universes. I mean, not really, but what can I do about it right? So just throw me your worst." She was so going to regret asking.

"The bar is called Caritas," Victor told her. "I don't really drink, but people who do like it. And worst would be ..."

He shrugged and went for it. "I'm an android, my roommate hunts demons, and neither of us is strange at all."

Pardon her while she failed to repress a smile over there for a moment.

Once that was over though, Emily stared at Victor for a good minute. It might have been a bit creepy. "I take it jokes about turning evil and conquering the world are out of the question, right?"

Her expression softened right after though. "Well, it's hard to believe from the get go, but let's give it a chance."

"Really not a fan of those jokes, no," Victor agreed, with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. The whole area was a sore spot. "I ... don't do tricks? I could, I dunno, shoot sparks or use magnetic powers on your jewelry or something, if that would help? Or recite pi. I know pi for a crazy long time."

She had hit a nerve. Did he have nerves? Whatever, Emily managed to keep her facade perfectly this time, but deep within she was grinning triumphantly. Emotional manipulation was one of those things she needed to keep working on.

Yes, this is your Little Sis, Victor.

Emily reacted accordingly by looking sorry, and a part of her truly felt sorry, perhaps. "Sorry, I won't mention that again. Well- you don't really look the part, for an android. Sparks would be cool?"

"I can do sparks," Victor said, seeming to relax. He held up a hand, carefully leaning into empty space, and miniature blue lightning bolts came from his fingers. "It ... looks more impressive if I'm angry," he explained. "But yeah, I'm based on human DNA and tissue, so it's not like I look all robot-y."

Against her best attempts to hide her surprise, Emily ended up open mouthed as she stared at the sparks. And this is the best part: she felt slightly scared as she looked at him, too. Maybe Victor looked like a nice guy, but Emily really didn't want to get in the bad side of someone capable of breaking her in half like a twig.

"So you're like, half-half? I don't really understand, but I guess that's probably for the best."

"If you understood, I'd start worrying you were a mad scientist yourself," Victor told her. "But, so -- that's me. What's your deal? How did you end up here?"

"Then let's just leave it at the fact you do some interesting stuff and maybe I'll understand sooner or later. No rush I guess."

And then there came the big question. This one would set precedents. "Oh I- my guardian sent me here? I guess he appreciates the...variety Fandom represents."

"It's definitely a good place to come to get used to all the crazy stuff in the world," Victor told her. "We have different years, different planets, different dimensions ... pretty much anything you can imagine."

"Pretty much anything...that's both a scary and exciting idea. I think I'm going to need some time to process all of this," said Emily as she took a deep breath. "Back home there is just people and, you know, people."

"It's not like plain old people don't get up to some weird stuff too," Victor said, sympathetically. "And, uh, I don't know if this helps, but we do have a lot of completely regular people with no powers or anything here too."

Emily allowed herself a short laugh. "I know, I know. About both things. I don't think I'll worry too much about it, since it doesn't seem like anybody does anyway." But the way things could be if there was some powerplay involved between powered people and just the normal ones would have been interesting, to say the least.

"My main goal for being here, if I can call it that way, is to meet people. Socialize, as they call it. Diversity only makes it better right?"

"And the school's really great about making everybody feel included," Victor told her. "Seriously, I'm sure you'll fit right in."

Emily beamed him a bright smile. "Thank you, Victor. I'll try not to make this whole Sibling thing too much of a hassle to you."

"I'm in 401 if you need me, and here's my phone number" Victor said, passing over a slip of paper with his contact information. "I promise it's not a hassle. Otherwise ... I'll see you around."

She folded the paper and stored it right away. This had gone well. "Thanks, again. See you around then."
