Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moldable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

She was a girl! She was even pretty cute (if she said so herself).

Karina was cautiously optimistic about the whole big-sib thing. After the dinosaur on the shuttle, she figured this place probably had a higher getting used to curve than most places. Having someone assigned to tell her what was up would be pretty nice.

Checking out peoples' nametags, after putting her own on, she wandered until she spotted the right name.

"Jeremy?" Smile, Karina, he was kind of cute. "Hi! I'm Karina. Unless there's another Jeremy about, I think you're my assigned big brother?"

"I'm charmed," she said, smiling. People didn't often bow to Karina. "Pleased to meet you. Have you been here long?"

She'd totally gotten the best sibling, as far as she was concerned. Maybe that was a snap judgment but, whatever, it was hers to make.

"Sternbild City?" Karina tried, though Gert hadn't seemed to know it. "It's not that far from here."

Maybe a smidgen more than an hour's flight.

Wasn't that useful, Jeremy?

"Okay," she said slowly, "like, how is that a thing? The brochures mentioned weirdness but I didn't really follow the whole portal thing. I'm guessing that's got to do with the... different places?"

Karina had skimmed. A lot.
