Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Back at home in Maryland, the weather was awful and raining and gross, just like it had been all week. Thankfully, Fandom's current locale was providing the island with much nicer weather to welcome the new students. It was warm, and sunny, and just about everything the administration could ask for on picnic day.

The tables and chairs had been dragged out and set up around the lawn, and there was the usual buffet table of delectable foods, along with the table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Peridot's escape pod had crashed along the beach earlier that morning, and she'd had absolutely no clue where she had landed. Even her screen couldn't help her with that one. It had taken some damage in the landing, but in the few moments when she could get it to work, it was giving her conflicting information entirely. The terrain they were on was typical of an Earth ecosystem, but their coordinates in space itself?

With a little hiss between her teeth she started to walk to scout the area for herself...

And was promptly herded over to a table with small adhesive strips on it and told to find the one with her name on it.

"... What."

There were name tags and there was no way Rufus was wearing one. He didn't wear one at his father's fancy and obligatory parties, he wasn't wearing one now.

He was carrying Dark Nation in one arm, since the puppy was (temporarily) tuckered out and exhausted from the excitement of the shuttle, and he looked around for someone named Kira.

As long as they're useful, I don't care what they're like.

Look, it wasn't every day that he met someone who believed aliens were real and had photos to back it up.

Mayday was on the lookout for someone named Jalian. Considering her conversation with Gratuity before the bus, it would be kind of funny if she were an alien. Jalian the Alien. ... That wasn't actually funny at all. It very possibly didn't even rhyme.

She was going to mentally blame her dad for that one. Sadly, his sense of humor was genetic.

Frank wandered around with an extra drink in hand for his new little sibling, Steven. Oops, he drank it. That was okay, he still had his original drink... Oh, right, he drank that first. Fortunately, he could always pour more! Oops, he drank it again.

Eventually, he was sure to time it right so he could meet young Steven!

Hanna was settled in with a plate of different chips, wondering if she'd get an alien or a boy for a roommate. And which would be more challenging.

Velcro was hiding in her hair, the better to scope out the new trespassers.

Was this some sort of trap? She was surrounded by humans and... other assorted organics... so she could only assume that she was on Earth. But they'd been expecting her, and there was no reasonable explanation for that part at all.

But, even more importantly...

"What's a roommate?"

And why did she have one?

"I have a roommate," Rufus said, bemused, as he took in the list. Was Velma a boy's name or a girl's name? Did it even really matter?

He supposed he'd adjust or figure out how to obtain a room to himself soon enough. With a glance at Dark Nation--his roommate was going to have no choice but to deal with his dog--he looked to see if anyone was looking for him.

Roscoe had never shared his space with anyone else before, but Hyacinthe was a pretty name and he was ready to keep an open mind. Hopefully Hyacinthe didn't hate clothes all over the floor, because that was what usually happened in Roscoe's bedroom back home.

Mayday didn't realize there would be roommates, but she it made sense. She was just going to have to adjust her only child thinking a little. That was dealable.

She didn't think there was a Ringo on the shuttle, so she started looking around for him or her.

Obi-Wan had no recollection of anyone named Deadpool. He was newly returned from Tatooine, his robes looking a bit sandier and scruffier for it. But he was here, hands shoved into his sleeves, watching everyone mill about with a faint smile on his face.

These picnics always had a habit of making him feel... slightly better about it all.

He'd take her home once she got tired. But until then, he was present.

Vanessa wasn't Deadpool, but she was his...honestly she wasn't sure what she was, they were still redefining their relationship after everything that had happened. She guessed they were still engaged. Anyway, she was here, if still vaguely startled about having been hired to teach children, and if someone offered to pray for her she would probably laugh.

Kanan's ship had been parked... somewhere. He'd go back to it and figure out where later, once he had a better idea of where he had landed. And the best way to do that was to make his way to civilization, so far as he figured. He'd landed in some sort of small, primitive-looking settlement, and the inhabitants appeared to at least be mostly human, so maybe he wasn't as lost as he seemed?

About three minutes after he stumbled across the picnic, he had a name-tag stuck to the front of his durasteel pauldron and was staring with some bemusement at a class outline that had been shoved into his hand. He would have protested that they had the wrong guy, but... well... his name was right there on the front page.

None of this really told him much about where he was. Or why he was here and how it was that anybody knew him, mind. And the sooner he could figure those two things out, the sooner he could find someplace to refuel the Expedient to get out of here before this all went to hell on him.

Jono had waffled about it for a good hour that morning, whether it would be worth the fuss to go to the picnic today with his face unwrapped. After all, he was hiding his flames less and less these days, and, hell, he didn't figure he'd be bothering to do so during his class at all this summer. He'd kind of made up his mind on the matter.

But he didn't want to traumatize anybody, and seeing a man on fire tended to raise a bit of concern for those who didn't already know better.

It had taken a bit of a fit of 'fuck it' for him to decide to just go to the bloody picnic already. Flames out, nametag stuck to his shoulder, Joni's head peeking curiously out of his jacket pocket, the little cat there more for his own benefit than anybody else's, and a bit of a bitter side-eye at the buffet table, and there he was. Ready to just get any potential fuss and bother out of the way. Or maybe to be pleasantly surprised. It wasn't too much to ask around here that he be pleasantly surprised now and again, was it?
