Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Back at home in Maryland, the weather was awful and raining and gross, just like it had been all week. Thankfully, Fandom's current locale was providing the island with much nicer weather to welcome the new students. It was warm, and sunny, and just about everything the administration could ask for on picnic day.

The tables and chairs had been dragged out and set up around the lawn, and there was the usual buffet table of delectable foods, along with the table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"If I knew that," Obi-Wan said dryly, "My life on this island would be so much easier, you've no idea."

He paused.

"Have you seen... Anakin... yet?"

He didn't think their falling out had been public knowledge, but...

"He's here, too?"

Kanan shouldn't have been surprised by that. Maybe? Actually, surprise seemed like just about the right way to react.

"How many of..." He caught himself. He was far from home, but if there were other Jedi here, there was a chance that there were people he'd be less inclined to be open with, too. And not all of them conveniently had the same face. "... How many people we know made their way out here?"

"There have been many Jedi on this island," Obi-Wan said carefully, "But I believe Anakin and I are the only ones who were in the Order when you were."

Dume had been edging around it. Obi-Wan supposed he didn't want to say that out loud. But still.

(Of course, he hadn't seen Ahsoka yet.)

Kanan sighed. Right, he supposed there was no pretending it hadn't happened, then. Not with Obi-Wan standing right there. Still, old habits died hard, and survival was the strongest habit he had, these days.

"I didn't think there were any others left."

He'd hoped there were. But he'd only ever met dead ends and blaster fire. And after a while, he'd given up.

"I can hardly blame you for it," Obi-Wan said. "Those of us who hope to live must hide very far indeed."

Kanan was quiet at that, mulling over this and all of the implications that it had before finally, just this once, embracing that little bit of Caleb again. The one who asked questions, consequences be damned, because he needed to know.

"Do you know about any others who might have survived?"

He didn't want the answer.

He needed the answer.

There was a long pause, as Obi-Wan both worked his memory and tried to decide how much was wise to say.

"Master Yoda," he said at last.

Caleb nodded.

Kanan nodded. And took another deep breath, and sighed. It was a very short list.

It was a longer list than he'd expected. And somehow, out of all of the members of the Order, the thought that Master Yoda was still out there and alive somewhere was... reassuring. He had always struck Kanan as a bit of a force of nature.

... A small, green, often confusing force of nature.

"Okay."

He didn't know what else to say. This morning when he'd woken up, he'd been secure in the knowledge that he was more or less aware of the way things were. Now he was wondering whether or not he was actually awake.

Obi-Wan's hands slid back into his sleeves.

He gave Dume a nod that was more of a bow, really.

"Take some time to settle in, Pa-- Kanan," he said. "I wager it will be a rather intense day for you, if it isn't already."

"It's been... enlightening so far, Master," he said, halfway through returning that bow before he remembered himself again, straightened, and reached a hand up to run through his hair.

Which was pulled back, the same way it had been for years, now. His hand sort of stuttered, and then corrected course to stroke thoughtfully at his beard, instead.

Smooth. Smooth. He was going to have to spend the rest of his day doing something that was unapologetically Kanan. Caleb had had a bit too much face-time today for his comfort.

"Thank you for this talk."

Drunk. He probably needed to get drunk tonight.

Yeah.

Funny. He wasn't the only one walking out of the picnic with that idea in mind.

"I am glad to see you well," Obi-Wan said. "May the Force be with you."

There were some Jedi you were never going to drag the Jedi out of. Obi-Wan was the apex of that, really.
