Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Back at home in Maryland, the weather was awful and raining and gross, just like it had been all week. Thankfully, Fandom's current locale was providing the island with much nicer weather to welcome the new students. It was warm, and sunny, and just about everything the administration could ask for on picnic day.

The tables and chairs had been dragged out and set up around the lawn, and there was the usual buffet table of delectable foods, along with the table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Home sweet home," Ender said wryly as he walked into the picnic area. He set tiny Val down on the ground, and kept an eye on her throughout the morning.

He'd take her home once she got tired. But until then, he was present.

"Ooh, she's growing up so fast!" squealed Mary as she spotted Ender and Val. "How old is she?"

"She's one now," Ender said. Beaming.

He didn't even realize he was doing it. It was just automatic.

"Val? Say hi to Mary. She runs the hotel we're staying at."

Val looked up at Mary. "HI," she yelled. A little too loudly.

Mary understood. She couldn't help grinning herself.

"Hi Val. Are you looking forward to spending the summer here?" she asked. To Ender, she asked, "I hope your room is comfortable. I've been going back and forth between Vegas and Fandom so much that I've had to trust that my staff is keeping on top of everything. But things back home seem to be settling down so I can finally stay put for a while."

"It'd been absolutely fine the last few times we lived there," Ender assured her, smiling. "I've got no doubt your service is still as good as ever."

"Noooo," Val said, chewing on her fingers. "Weird! Weird rocks."

"She doesn't like the Rocky Bits," Ender clarified.

"The place seems to run itself about 90% of the time, but it's that other 10% that makes life interesting," said Mary. "Sometimes I wonder if I should do something different and give teaching a shot."

She smiled at Val. "What do you like? The beach is my favorite place."

Val frowned at her. "N'boo," she said stubbornly. "Cake!"

"Your birthday was yesterday, sweetheart, and we're not going back." Ender shot Mary a wry smile. "We only just got here, and she doesn't remember being here when she was just a few weeks old," he said. "We'll have to show her all the good parts."

"Then you'll definitely have to visit the beach," said Mary. "I grew up in a desert, so it's nice to look out and see the ocean every day when we're not floating around in outer space. Of course, that was still a cool view..."

To Val, she stage-whispered, "Do you want to know a secret? If you tell Gunther at the hotel that you like cake, he might make his special cupcakes for you."

Val's eyes went really big, and she looked from Mary to Ender and back. "I wanna," she said. "Dad! Want cupcake!"

Ender sighed good-naturedly. "When we get back to the hotel, we'll ask Gunther," he said dutifully.

"But there's a catch with the cupcake. It's a nice treat, but it's a small one and you have to savor it. If you eat it too quickly, then it's gone and you don't get another," said Mary.

There probably wasn't a limit to Gunther's cupcakes, but he probably wouldn't offer seconds if he wasn't asked.

"Remember, you have to time it," Ender teased softly.

"Waiting," Val said, frowning.
