Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Back at home in Maryland, the weather was awful and raining and gross, just like it had been all week. Thankfully, Fandom's current locale was providing the island with much nicer weather to welcome the new students. It was warm, and sunny, and just about everything the administration could ask for on picnic day.

The tables and chairs had been dragged out and set up around the lawn, and there was the usual buffet table of delectable foods, along with the table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change, but the list had been posted for everyone to see at one of the tables:

Hanna was settled in with a plate of different chips, wondering if she'd get an alien or a boy for a roommate. And which would be more challenging.

Velcro was hiding in her hair, the better to scope out the new trespassers.

So Tip's roommate had what sounded like a very normal Earth name. Which after her conversations so far was almost weird. She'd been half expecting to end up living with another alien.

She wasn't actually sure if living with a normal human would be easier or not.

She peered around the milling people, trying to decide who looked like a "Hanna". And trying to make her nametag more obvious.

"It's too bad you don't read English," she said to Bill. "I could send you scouting."

Bill buzzed apologetically on her head.

Hanna was watching the new students, and hadn't decided who was her roommate yet. But this one was close enough to offer food to, at least. "Chips?" she asked, holding out the paper plate.

Velcro chirruped next to her ear.

'Normal' was kind of debatable with Hanna.

Oh hey! A cat who wasn't a clone of Pig. She hadn't seen one in years. "Thanks," she said, taking a chip. "I like your cat."

Hanna looked pleased, and rubbed her cheek against Velcro's fur. "You're welcome. And his name is Velcro." She held out an arm for him to tumble down, and caught him before he landed in her lap. She checked on the new girl's name-tag and her eyebrows went up. "I'm Hanna. Hanna Heller. And you're - Gratuity?"

"That's me. Your new roommate, apparently." Velcro was much more acrobatic than Pig. "Hope you didn't have your heart set on a single."

"Maybe you can het more if you ask?" Steven said, pondering out loud. "I mean, depending on the size of the room, it could probably fit more. And then you can have slumber parties every night!"

"What's a slumber party?" FN-2187 asked. "I'm just used to living in barracks, is all. Dual rooms are for...well, junior officers, probably. Not cadets!"

"You've never had a slumber party?" Steven said. "They're great! You all get to huddle around and just... sleep in the same room! But you can talk until you fall asleep, or share stories, or sometimes people just fall asleep right away."

"Well it looks like you get to be a special cadet, since you get a dual room. So do I. So does everybody, it looks like."

Was a slumber party like overnight field training? They weren't really encouraged to share stories and talk during those, though.

"I don't know if anybody's really special if we all get the same thing," FN-2187 pointed out.

"Everybody's special in their own way," Steven said, completely earnestly. "Just sometimes we haven't figured out what it is, yet."

He smiled. "You know, I forgot to ask your name back at the lobby."

Peridot was well beyond confused, now. She was... supposed to be here?

Was this some sort of trap? She was surrounded by humans and... other assorted organics... so she could only assume that she was on Earth. But they'd been expecting her, and there was no reasonable explanation for that part at all.

But, even more importantly...

"What's a roommate?"

And why did she have one?

"It means we're sharing quarters," Ahsoka said. She'd noticed her responding to Peridot earlier. She didn't recognise the other girl's species, but it was a big galaxy. Galaxies.

"Quarters? This school provides us with spaces of our own?"

At least that much seemed to make some sense. As a Peridot, she really didn't have much of her own, so the idea seemed almost a little bit novel.

"And you are the... Ahsoka that I've been assigned to?"

Peridot didn't recognize her species either, though she looked a bit like she could almost be a Gem, herself. In a sea of ishy-squishy humans, knowing that she wasn't actually sharing a space with one was reassuring, somewhat.

"That's right, Ahsoka Tano." It weird that it was safe to use her name here, weird but good. "I don't know what they'll be like here, but it won't be the first time I've shared living space."

Peridot was very new with that one. But then, Peridot didn't sleep. It wasn't as though she'd ever needed a bedroom, after all.

"I have a roommate," Rufus said, bemused, as he took in the list. Was Velma a boy's name or a girl's name? Did it even really matter?

He supposed he'd adjust or figure out how to obtain a room to himself soon enough. With a glance at Dark Nation--his roommate was going to have no choice but to deal with his dog--he looked to see if anyone was looking for him.

Roscoe had never shared his space with anyone else before, but Hyacinthe was a pretty name and he was ready to keep an open mind. Hopefully Hyacinthe didn't hate clothes all over the floor, because that was what usually happened in Roscoe's bedroom back home.

Mayday didn't realize there would be roommates, but she it made sense. She was just going to have to adjust her only child thinking a little. That was dealable.

She didn't think there was a Ringo on the shuttle, so she started looking around for him or her.

Ringo was short enough that you'd think she'd be hard to miss in a crowd, but she moved with so much energy that it kind of made up for it. She was practically bouncing as she moved around the lawn, a huge grin on her face.

A roommate! She hadn't had one for a whole semester. And she was looking forward to it.

Also, 'May' seemed like a pretty name, so she was sure that whoever that name belonged to would be really cool!

Mayday noticed the bouncing person and took a moment to look for a nametag that was presumably there?, just in case. "Ringo?" she checked unless there was no nametag in which case she just guessed well.

At the sound of her name, Ringo put on a grin and turned in the appropriate direction. "That's me!" She looked at this girl she didn't know as if wondering how she'd known Ringo's name. Maybe someone had told her or something? That'd be neat!

(It was your nametag, Ringo. The giant, obvious one stuck to your dress.)
