Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Back at home in Maryland, the weather was awful and raining and gross, just like it had been all week. Thankfully, Fandom's current locale was providing the island with much nicer weather to welcome the new students. It was warm, and sunny, and just about everything the administration could ask for on picnic day.

The tables and chairs had been dragged out and set up around the lawn, and there was the usual buffet table of delectable foods, along with the table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Hanna's expression eased as Gratuity accepted what she'd said without further comment, then added somewhat shyly, "I love music. The best store in town is Groovy Tunes; they have instruments as well as CD's. And Jonothan, who works there and sometimes teaches? Is happy to help you find anything you'd like."

"Very cool," Tip said. "I signed up to take a music class, too. Do you play anything, too? I'd love to learn sometime, but we never had any money for even a rental when I was growing up."

Because she was clearly all done growing up, at 14.

"No. I sing a little." Hanna's face flamed, because she really didn't feel she was any good at it, not yet. "My mother was a singer." The thought of that lost record album still hurt sometimes, when she thought about Needful Things. "But if you don't mind me practicing..."

"Not even a little," Tip assured her. "I sing along to my music all the time. We can have little dance parties."

Hanna's face brightened. "I would like that. Much better than dancing alone." She smiled a little, thinking what else her new roommate would want to know. "There's food in the Common Rooms, and unless someone has written their name on it, it's usually for everyone. There's a garden on the dorm roof, if you want to grow things. There's a pool, and the laundry room is in the basement-- it only acts up sometimes." She frowned and then finished with, "And my favorite teacher is Pinkie Pie." Who Gratuity probably wouldn't bat an eyelash at, since she her best friend was an alien.

"Oh, I didn't see any classes taught by a Pie on the list," Tip said. "I'm taking music and Shakespeare." She opened up her phone to look at the class list again. ". . . And apparently Adventuring for Idiots."

She was going to have to have some words with J.Lo on that one.

Hanna smothered a laugh and said, "You didn't sign up for that? There are a great many paperwork errors around here. I signed up for music appreciation and Shakespeare as well.... I think Miss Pie is on break, but she may be back later in the summer."

"We'll have to keep an eye out for her," Tip agreed. Though she had absolutely no idea what she'd be looking for. "Are the other teachers cool, too?"

"Yes," Hanna said instantly. "Particularly Mr. Spencer, and Mr. Hardison. I signed up for music because Jonothan was teaching it. And I haven't met all of them, but our principal is very impressive." She tilted her head. "Are you planning on going into music in the future?"

"Actually, I want to be a writer. I won a contest when I was twelve, writing about the year of the invasion, and I kind of got the bug, you know?"

"Ohh! Congratulations." Hanna smiled and said, "I'm planning on being a tour guide, sometime in the future. But I have a lot of work to put in before I get that far." She looked around and added wryly, "You'll have a great deal to write about, living on this island."

"I'm starting to gather," Tip agreed. "What kinds of tours are you going to do?"

"I think cultural? Music and parties, and art." All the things she hadn't had growing up. "One of my classes took us to cities all over the world, and let us see the landmarks, and go to the local bars and parties. It was wonderful. Something like that, but smaller, that would be perfect. Maybe on a boat." She tilted her head. "Will you write novels, or other things, do you think?"

"I don't know," Tip said. "Everything. I want to write everything. I could write travel books talking up your amazing tours."

"You would be invited along for free," Hanna promised her mock-solemnly. "And be given extra desserts."

"I do enjoy a good dessert," Tip said. "I think that sounds like a deal."
