Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Back at home in Maryland, the weather was awful and raining and gross, just like it had been all week. Thankfully, Fandom's current locale was providing the island with much nicer weather to welcome the new students. It was warm, and sunny, and just about everything the administration could ask for on picnic day.

The tables and chairs had been dragged out and set up around the lawn, and there was the usual buffet table of delectable foods, along with the table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"It was acceptable," Rufus said. "I had never travelled by portal before but nothing untoward happened. I'm Rufus, which I believe makes you my school-assigned sibling? Pleased to meet you."

"Oh, then I'm really glad to meet you!" she said excitedly. "I've been here for about two years now, so I hope I can answer any questions you have. I've got to ask though, how did you end up coming here? Like, are you here for school?"

"I'm here for school," he confirmed. "And I've read up on this location. I wouldn't mind hearing more from the point of view of someone who lives here, however. All my information is second-hand at best."

Rufus took a moment, to make it look like he was hesitating, and then asked the question whose answer he was most interested in: "What other reasons do people have for being here, if not for school?"

"Well, some people end up here accidentally," Kira explained. "Like, they take a portal but they didn't mean to? But somehow, the school knows they're going to be here, so they get a room and everything. This place is... a little weird."

"I wonder how they manage that," he said thoughtfully. "How interesting. I'd be curious to see if there's been any research done about how the administration knows any of that."

Rufus glanced at her. "Were you here unexpectedly?"

"No, I knew I was coming here, thankfully. And I'm also lucky because it's the same time here as when I'm at home. As in, it's 2016." In case that needed clarification. "Some people came here from different years and had to adjust."

Rufus (almost) looked amused at that.

"That's good to know," he said. "I come from a different world, so I'm afraid your calendar doesn't match up with mine at all."

Kira let out a big breath. "Okay, so you're used to different worlds, awesome," she said. "Sometimes people don't realize that's a thing and then they meet our talking pony and there's flailing and freaking out." Kira grinned at him. "Ultimately, the thing is that everyone here is really nice. We all kind of look out for each other, even though some people are very different."
