Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Back at home in Maryland, the weather was awful and raining and gross, just like it had been all week. Thankfully, Fandom's current locale was providing the island with much nicer weather to welcome the new students. It was warm, and sunny, and just about everything the administration could ask for on picnic day.

The tables and chairs had been dragged out and set up around the lawn, and there was the usual buffet table of delectable foods, along with the table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

After seeing the guy with his face on fire, Vanessa guessed Wade could have had it worse in some respects.

At least no one had sewed his mouth shut in this universe.

"Mutant?" she checked.

If he used sign language, they were screwed, because all Vanessa knew were rude gestures.

Weren't you in luck, Vanessa? You got to have a weirdly disembodied voice in your brain, instead!

//Mutant,// Jono confirmed, giving her a thoughtful look before offering her his hand to shake. //Jonothon Starsmore, teaching what basically amounts to music history and theory this semester. And guessing you're new?//

"I am. Vanessa Carlysle," she said, taking his hand. "I get to teach people how to have relationships or something. So are you one of those X-Men people? Or do you work for that fuckface Francis?" Vanessa sounded considerably less thrilled about one of these options.

//I don't know any fuckfaces by that name in particular,// Jono replied, shrugging his shoulders. //But I used to run around with an X on my belt on a few occasions. I'm mostly retired from that sort of thing now. I teach there, on occasion.//

It was saner than putting on the tights.

He refused to wear tights even when he did go heroing with them.

"Well, good," Vanessa decided, still eyeing him warily, like he might try to drag Wade off to Westchester or something.

If it helped any, Jono was eyeing her back slightly. Mostly because of the eyeing she was giving him.

//... Something the matter?//

It was kind of hilarious that the guy with his face on fire was the one asking her that. "Sorry, I'm just used to you X-people being more about the really enthusiastic recruitment of my boyfriend. Fiance. Person."

//Ah.// Okay, given that he'd been enthusiastically recruited on a few occasions himself, one of which involved Bobby flipping over the coffee table in his damn hotel room, Jono could understand the concern. //Fair enough. Who's your boyfriend-fiance-person, then?//

"You've actually met him, I think. Red and black spandex?"

//Deadpool? You and Wade...?//

Jono glanced back toward mister red and black spandex himself, and then shrugged.

//Well, right, then. No, I'm not here on some sort of insane X-Men recruitment drive. I have no time of day for that nonsense, anymore. Trust me, I understand how bloody pushy they can be. Not my style.//

"Yep!" Vanessa confirmed, holding up her hand and wiggling her finger with the Voltron ring like it was a two-carat flawless princess cut. "And I'm glad to hear that. They helped me out of a tough spot--" Okay, they rescued her when she was the damsel in distress. "--but I can do without the speechifying."

//Oh, Christ, the speeches,// Jono replied, burying the not-burning part of his face in his hand. //I'm all for not running around committing casual murder, but there's only so much of the speeches a person can take. Anyway, it's a bit hypocritical, considering... Wolverine.//

Considering Wolverine. Period.

"Oh, do you know that guy?" Vanessa asked. "Wade seems to have a grudge against him for some reason, but I don't really understand it. Something about his mouth being sewn shut and development hell?" She shrugged. "Wade."

//Played a mentor figure to me for a while, sort of. It ended poorly.//

To say the least. But there he went, running back to Westchester to teach when Logan had asked.

Like a moron.

//I don't pretend to understand Wade's grudges, though more often than not there generally seems to be something to them. He's good at that.//

"So apparently I'm supposed to ask you about Wade's kid that he never told me about before?" Vanessa was not thrilled for some reason.

Jono couldn't imagine why!

//Adopted child, if that helps any,// he offered, spreading his hands a little. //Though there might be some alternate reality craziness going on, there. I'm still not entirely certain.//

Wade was Wade, after all. Unless somebody had done something horribly wrong somewhere ~~and sewed his mouth shut~~.

"Alternate universes," Vanessa repeated. Then she sighed and muttered, "Well, that would explain why he was insisting it was 'another him.'" She'd run that through her Wade to normal filter and thought he meant his old face.

God, she missed his old face.

//I think in this one case, your Wade is completely innocent,// Jono promised. //Which... is possibly the strangest thing I've said all day.//

Because... Wade.
