Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Back at home in Maryland, the weather was awful and raining and gross, just like it had been all week. Thankfully, Fandom's current locale was providing the island with much nicer weather to welcome the new students. It was warm, and sunny, and just about everything the administration could ask for on picnic day.

The tables and chairs had been dragged out and set up around the lawn, and there was the usual buffet table of delectable foods, along with the table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"It offered a variety of learning possibilities and a lot of great extracurricular activity, all without mentioning that the activity might involve being in space or time traveling," Mayday said. "Why did you end up here?"

"I was attempting to travel along a neg-entropy timeline; instead of ending at my intended place, the island pulled me here." Jalian shrugged. "It hasn't been too bad." Except for not being able to stop Armageddon from here. "It has been odd, though."

"I can imagine, since the first part of that didn't make any sense to me at all," Mayday said. "Hopefully you've had enough time to adjust by now."

"Oh, yes; I've been here years now. Adjusting can be hard, though." She thought of everything people had mentioned as difficult. "Aliens and other times and worlds make sense to you - there is also magic. And people with strange powers."

"That's definitely common where I'm from. I didn't stop to think that there might be a place without mutants and the like," Mayday considered.

"Every timeline is different." Jalian shrugged. "And this place has things I think are new for everybody. I have woken as a male version of me." Her face gave her impression of that pretty well. "And as a child."

"Okay, yeah, both those things would be new to me," Mayday suggested. "I'm kind of hoping to avoid all of that."

"You might. It happens to most people, but not to all." Jalian pondered. "Also things sometimes invade. Can you fight?"

Not yet. "I can throw a basketball at something if I have to," Mayday offered. "What kind of things?"

"Sometimes there are things that try to fight us. There were fish things with flying machines on them, and aliens in a big ship, and sometimes other things." Jalian looked Mayday over; she at least seemed more athletic and practical than Lucille.

"I can teach you knife work, if you want. If you don't fight, it's best if you stay in the dorms where it's safe if something happens."
