Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The lawn was arranged with tables and chairs - some near the food, some not - and there was plenty of food to go around. The school had even wised up and put to-go boxes by the plates, so people didn't have to put food in their pockets to take it with them for later. No one was gonna judge you for making some pocket bacon, but at least now it wasn't a necessity.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

No, Octavia was still not a student nor a teacher.

And yes, Octavia was once more piling her plate high as well as stuffing her pockets with picnic food that would keep for a while. Occasionally, she was glancing around for people she knew, but the food was clearly a priority.

Yeah, Beau was here for the free food mostly, and maybe to give Fjord a bit of a hard time if she saw him.

She was alternating between casting thoughtful, skeptical glances up at the castle and kind of glowering as she looked around and assessed the students, but the whole time she was, yes, absolutely shoving bacon into her pockets while she ate. WHAT.

Ugh, mingling-type social events. Really not Peebee's style, and no amount of free food would change her mind on that point, but watching from a reasonable distance was at least some form of entertainment.

Honestly, she wanted to see if anyone was going to be shirtless at this picnic -- and if asked, she might argue that she was sort of contributing to the tradition with that midriff-exposing jacket of hers.

A bit curious about the new students, Breq showed up early, and picked up some food. She took a seat and watched the people walking past, making sure she smiled at those who looked in her direction.

Norman had brought a small selection of zombie comic books to sit down by the fire with and read, yes. Because Norman was nothing if not predictable, he supposed. Still, the fire was nice, and sitting by it was sort of a social activity, right? Even if it mostly involved having his head down?

He was glancing up occasionally to see if he could spot any interesting new kids, though, or anybody looking especially lost. Doing his part and all that, right?

Don't ask when Vette had migrated from the 'meet your sibling' corner of the picnic to the food tables. It had happened so naturally that she really couldn't tell you. Honest.

She was totally using one of those to-go boxes and filling that sucker up high, though.

And then maybe reaching for another.

Possibly a third...

And that was before she reached for a plate for herself for right now.

Sure, Sparkle wasn't teaching this semester, but he was showing up here anyway, keeping an eye out for any new, cold-looking faces. He had a bag slung over his shoulder - yes, it was his usual backpack - but it was full up with scarves and gloves and toques, and he'd be handing them out like candy on Halloween today.

He knew better than to assume that every new student would know where to go for warm clothing right away.

Besides, the faster he emptied this stuff out from his backpack, the sooner he could start smuggling picnic food into it.

Shut up.

Everything about this whole situation felt like a trap, but there was also food that no one seemed to care if it was taken.

And he was a 16 year old boy who hadn't had a full meal in quite some time.

So please excuse his extreme gluttony maybe?

Oooh! It was another social experiment! The next Princess Prom wasn't for another year or so, so this was just a bonus!

Entrapta quickly filled up her pouch with all the tiny foods she could spot on the table - and there were so many! Including tiny little burgers! - and then staked out a spot behind a big tree where she could watch.

Different groups thrown together and forced to mingle. Hierarchies formed and broke. It was the perfect place to observe behavior.

There was food! Mae grabbed a to-go box and packed it full, then stuck a plate on top of that and loaded it up full.

And stuck some things into her pockets, too.

Then she hopped up on top of one of the more distant tables and settled in to watch the crowd. This place was extremely different from Possum Springs!

Tip had been to enough of these now to have a system down pat. She even had her usual spot to people-watch from.

It was fun to watch the newbies' brains slowly break down.

Astrid had only gotten back that morning; she'd only even known she was coming back two days ago, after another long week of meetings with her case worker and lawyers and just wanting to visit her mother again, but it wasn't allowed. She still wasn't sure if she wanted to be back; the short term house she was staying in was nice, the people were terribly kind and the other kids left her alone. They gave everyone a few presents for Christmas, nothing much, dollar store trinkets or donated things, and she knew that if she stayed in California, she'd be reassigned to a family like Starr and Uncle Ray again, but that didn't seem so bad if it meant getting to visit Ingrid more often.

At the same time, being so close and not being allowed to visit was achingly painful. She could feel her mother's presence through every pore of her skin, every blood cell flowing through her veins, but she couldn't see her or hear her or touch her...

...the distance, she hoped, would help dull the pain of longing. She thought about just hiding out in her room, maybe get started on a new painting for the semester, but she also thought maybe being around people would create enough noise to block out all the thoughts swimming in her head, the conflict of being both relieved to be back and wishing she wasn't, the chaos of a heart being pulled in two opposite directions.

She grabbed some food, but she wasn't very hungry. It remained mostly untouched while she bent over her sketchbook, back to drawing out the things she saw when she peeked up and through the curtain of blonde hair, just like the first picnic, probably just like every picnic from here on in.

These picnics were going to be the death of him. But, Prompto reasoned that, since he didn't exactly gorge himself on food while in Hyrule, plus there was all that fighting and traveling and running around, he could let himself indulge a little with a couple slices of pizza, right?

...he'd regret it in an hour or so, but, hey, once this was all over and the new kids were getting settled, he could always just ease his mind about it at the gym.

One good thing about being obsessed with particular about your food? When you did give in, it was, like, a million times better than when you ate it regularly. This pizza was practically divine right now.

And Sidon, of course, was there, taking the occasional break for pizza or sushi offerings from the buffet table in between energetic and enthusiastically trying to meet all the new people, because he was Sidon, and that was just what he did.

Also, it never really hurt to have a giant red shark fellow running around to get some pretty good gawking out of his incoming peers.

Jack was leaning against a tree with her best bored expression. Which meant she was trying to be approachable and friendly. She was situated where she could see newcomers and watching for one face in particular. So help her, if that asshole didn't show up, she was going to just go kick his door in.

In the meanwhile there were other people to watch. Size up. Maybe ogle here and there.

Sabine was mostly grateful to have actual people around again. She was still sitting at a picnic table with a warm drink to watch what was going on rather than doing any real mingling, and watching to see if any of the incoming newbies were going to get weird about a Mandalorian hanging around.

Her new look before the new semester was actually accidental. That'd been due to a crisis of boredom.

Kagura had sat down to eat some more food when she heard a loud bark.

"Sadaharu?" she said, looking around. And sure enough, there was her dog, bounding toward her. Her giant dog that was 5' 7" tall seated and weighed 300 kilograms. She squealed with happiness and nuzzled right into the fur of his cheek when he came up. "You followed me!"

Or maybe Gintoki had sent him because he didn't want to pay for food or clean up after the giant dog in Kagura's absence. One of the two.

So don't mind Kagura. She's now just playing with her giant puppy.

Kaidan had shown up with a sleep-dazed expression that had turned into near shock when Jack had pounced on him. The news was..well. It sure was some news. He didn't really know what to think about it yet, and his brain was just a completely surprised stew.

He went to the picnic tables and began pretending he was contemplating which snacks he wanted.

Fenris had the first cold of his life and he was convinced he was dying. Fjord had left that morning for one of his teacher..things.. but had mentioned the picnic. Free food wasn't something he wanted to miss out on. He felt well enough to trudge up to the school.

So there's a miserable looking elf in leather and metal armor, carrying a big sword, wearing a yellow crocheted ducky hat on his head, picking out choice bits of food to put in those handy, handy boxes. Trying to will himself enough energy to make it back to the hotel and contemplating the valid reason for a rickshaw.

He's sniffly, he's sneezy, he's altogether wheezy, he's Feeennnnriiiiss..
