Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The lawn was arranged with tables and chairs - some near the food, some not - and there was plenty of food to go around. The school had even wised up and put to-go boxes by the plates, so people didn't have to put food in their pockets to take it with them for later. No one was gonna judge you for making some pocket bacon, but at least now it wasn't a necessity.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Don't ask when Vette had migrated from the 'meet your sibling' corner of the picnic to the food tables. It had happened so naturally that she really couldn't tell you. Honest.

She was totally using one of those to-go boxes and filling that sucker up high, though.

And then maybe reaching for another.

Possibly a third...

And that was before she reached for a plate for herself for right now.

"So, what did you think of Hyrule?" Lana asked.

Vette glanced up at Lana with a wry little smile.

"I don't think I've ever been anywhere as beautiful in my entire life," she admitted. "Just me, or did the Raito remind you of the Rishii? I mean, what I've heard of the Rishii, anyway. And Zora's domain..."

She kind of felt bad she hadn't taken time to introduce her to Sidon's father. But all-told, she wasn't half as brave sometimes as she pretended to be.

"They did," Lana agreed. "Though I've never met a Rishii, either. Zora's domain was lovely - I met one of their elders and helped him document some of their old stelai. They've got a fascinating history."

She smirked just a little. "Two of the zora when we first got in were determined to find out if I were Prince Sidon's special friend. Did you encounter them, too?"

"Tula and Tona?" See Vette. See Vette groan and attempt to hide her face in one of her takeaway boxes.

... Mmmm. Cookie box.

"Yeaaaah, we met."

Space, had they ever met.

Lana grinned. "Them, yes. I take it they found you, too."

Vette mumbled something into her cookies that might or might not have parsed as, "When they found out it was me, I thought they were going to die."

Or that maybe she might, in her sleep, while nobody else was paying attention.

"Oh, dear." Lana shook her head. "I'd say you should've strung them along, but I'm sure the moment Sidon showed up, he'd have made it rather obvious."

Sidon was many things. Subtle wasn't even in his vocabulary.

"I mean, I did, for a while," Vette admitted. "But like you said... it would've been hard to miss. So I told them, and then one of them started crying about blue and they made plans to set up a blue-scaled Zora lady with someone who wasn't Sidon to get her off the market."

Which mostly suggested to Vette that they weren't holding their breath for this thing to last long. And maybe by Zora standards that was even true! But they could've at least been more subtle about it.

Lana blinked at her. "Is the entire Zora race allergic to subtlety?" she asked. "Not to mention I doubt he likes you for your colour. I hope the rest of your reception was better."

"Sure," Vette replied. "Raiding the evil doom castle was pretty fun."

She hadn't found anything of any worth, but the getting there had been enjoyable?

"It was," Lana agreed. "And the people were all so friendly!" It was a little odd, but not unpleasant.

"Yes. They were... all... so..." Vette waved a hand. She'd had the distinct impression from at those first two that they would happily murder her in her sleep for a shot at dating her boyfriend, so she'd sort of slept with one eye open while in Zora's Domain, even if the inn was perfectly safe. "I mean, the feast was kind of them, right?"

While Sidon did always fully dedicate himself to meeting as many new people at the picnics as he possibly could, he felt it would be terribly remiss of him if he didn't managed to make time for his girlfriend somewhere in the midst of his quest. Granted, his reasons for doing this was entirely selfish and rooted very deeply in the fact that he merely wanted to spend time with her, but that was just a harsh reality the both of them would have to deal with.

"If you need assistance with any of those boxes," he said, deciding he was not above taking advantage of Vette's full hands to swoop down in the attempt to steal a kiss, "I am incredibly pleased to report that I have two very capable and currently very empty hands eager to help."

Well, for the price of a kiss, Vette would certainly let Sidon help her with those boxes!

"My hero," she laughed, smiling up at him. "How did you know I was looking for an empty pair of capable hands right about now?"

"Didn't you know?" Sidon asked, any attempts to sound lofty about it spoiled terribly by his chuckle and the grin on his face, which wasn't going anywhere any time soon. "I've got a sense for these sorts of complicated dilemmas, and it would be terribly tragic to notice you eyeing more of these tantalizing morsels and having to turn away from them despite your longing on the mere technicality of only have two hands., when such a simple solution not only exists, but is fantastically eager to be put into action!"

"Oh, I intend to take full advantage of your hands, then," Vette laughed.

... And if it was anybody else, maybe there would have been a dirty implication behind that statement. But Vette was not actually the dirty-minded Twi'lek girl that half the glaxy suspected she might be.

"If you don't mind carrying about eight kilos of potato chips, I mean."

She was stockpiling for winter or something.

Sidon would have to admit, some of the edge of the dirty implications did sneak into his mind for a moment. The thoughts were still rather charmingly innocent, but he was undeniably in a bit of an awakening lately for something that most Zora his age had already discovered at least a decade ago.

"I would happily carry eighty kilos of them if you so desired," he assured her. He wasn't entirely sure exactly how much that was, if he was honest, but he knew that he would at least make his best attempt. "Feeling a bit ravenous today, are we, Vette?"

Vette ducked her head a little, smiling, but there was a sort of sheepish bent to it, then.

"Not ravenous, no," she admitted. "Most of this stuff is for later. Food that'll keep, you know? Chips, cookies, some of the baked goods last a while. And there was a bowl of nuts, I think those'll be okay for a week or two..."

Hoarding. She was hoarding. And while she wasn't being called out on it or anything, she was suddenly feeling very self-conscious about it.

Things that would last a while despite the fact that she'd been living here how long and there was never a single moment when Sidon walked into the common room and opened the refrigerator to find it practically stuffed to the gills with food?

Sidon realized immediately what had happened and winced slightly as he realized what he'd said, and wondered if he could double down on his offer and promise to carry eight hundred kilos for her, if she needed.

"A superb idea," he said, hoping he managed to recover smoothly enough. "With the winter approaching, there's no telling what may happen. There's always extra room in the common room on my floor, as well, if you need, and you know I have a whole closet in my room that's entirely going to waste..."

Although there was a good chance some of Paris's binders and folders or whatever else it was she had had managed to make their way in there; he didn't exactly check it often. She could have a whole library tucked away, for all he knew.

"See," Vette said immediately, latching on to that out. "I mean, if what we just had wasn't winter, how bad does it really get? And the power went out and people were just having 'eating all the food before it goes bad' parties in the common rooms, so it can't hurt to have a ready supply, right?"

Food insecurity was kind of rampant among her people. Even without taking the rest of her history into account, Ryloth wasn't exactly renowned for its vast tracts of arable land or anything.

And as someone who had grown up being able to take literally two steps and find food, even in the scarcity after Calamity Ganon's arrival, it was still something Sidon had to remember...even if he'd only really known about it since the weekend they were but mere hatchlings.

"Precisely," he said with firm enthusiasm, smiling at her. "What an incredible display of foresight, Vette. Last year, I don't recall it ever getting quite as bad as the last weekend, but one can never tell. I know I'll be grateful to know that, in a pinch, I'll not need to venture too far to find something to eat....assuming, of course," his smile broadened a little, "you wouldn't terribly mind me dipping into your stores perhaps a little."

...most of the things she was going to be taking were borderline inedible for him. It would not even remotely be an issue.

Vette looked thoughtful for a moment, and then looked toward the tables, tilting her head.

"You know, it's weird they don't have any dried fish or anything," she mused. "I bet I could find something, though..."

Cans! They canned everything, right? Sure, it was cooked right to hell and back, but at least it was fish! Not... not that it was an actual concern. Because she was sure he was either humoring her or trying to let her save face, one of those two things.

Maybe now was a good time for a strategic topic change.

"So, back to Fandom Island, huh? Missing home yet?"

Sidon wanted to assure her that it was fine, really, she needn't go through the trouble, but a topic change seemed far better and more efficient, and who was he to he to keep her from having her own methods of feeling helpful when he was so dedicated to his own?

So he smiled faintly at her and nodded. "Always," he said, " but it was incredibly nice to visit again, especially after last week. Everyone seemed to have had a good time, as well, which is more important than anything else. I do wish I had more time to spend with everyone; I didn't even have the chance to introduce you properly to my father, Vette, for which I sincerely apologize, but there is, thankfully," hopefully, "always next time."

"I would have liked the chance to meet him, I think," Vette admitted.

While at the same time being utterly terrified of the prospect.

"I meant to," she added, "but I met the welcoming committee on the way in, and they had so much to say," space, had they ever, "that, wouldn't you know it, I was just completely tired out," hiding, "when they were done."
