Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The lawn was arranged with tables and chairs - some near the food, some not - and there was plenty of food to go around. The school had even wised up and put to-go boxes by the plates, so people didn't have to put food in their pockets to take it with them for later. No one was gonna judge you for making some pocket bacon, but at least now it wasn't a necessity.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I'm... pretty sure it's relatively secular," Sparkle offered, after a moment to consider. "Some of the teachers might be weird cultists or religious warriors or whatever, but they're generally pretty easy to ignore."

Mae peered at him suspiciously.

"Alright," she decided. "If you'd just denied it flat out, I would have said that's exactly what a cultist would say. But you didn't, so . . . I guess I can believe you.

"For now."

If she ended up in a cult, Sparkle, she was going to blame you.

Sparkle just shrugged and smiled crookedly.

"This school's weird."

He said to the girl with the cat head. And was mostly just okay with that.

He'd been around a while.

"It has shark people and apparently no math," Mae observed. "Wait. Is the reason there's no math because they want us stupid for the cult training?"

Damn you, math! This was somehow your fault.

"Nah," Sparkle replied. "There's no math because the teachers are all too fucking lazy to want to teach it."

He'd had to get his by correspondence.

Correspondence was hell.

"I am beginning to see why this was the cheapest boarding school my parents could find."

"Basically," Sparkle agreed easily. "But hey, no math."

So win, right?

"I'm cool with no math. No homework would also be nice."

Sparkle paused for a moment, considering that.

"Does taking care of a screaming baby robot for a week count?"

Because that was pretty much the only example of homework he could think of from his own student days, and he didn't even know if Skywalker was teaching a 'surprise robobaby' class this semester.

"Wow. Cheap school's got money. Back home they don't even bother doing an egg anymore."

People tended to eat the eggs.

"I don't know if it's that the school has money, or if the Ethics teacher is just really devoted to making his students suffer."

Probably both. Sparkle suspected both.

". . . I feel like that is maybe the opposite of Ethics?"

"I mean, there's definitely an ethical code of some sort involved," Sparkle replied.

It was, in Sparkle's estimation, perhaps a shitty one.

... He was still holding a grudge over that exercise with the line and the stepping forward or backwards to check one's privelege. Being at the back of the damn room had a funny way of doing that.

Mae had two parents and a house to go back to if she had to. Otherwise, she'd probably not make it very far in that exercise, either.

"Isn't ethics supposed to be, like. Doing good things? Not deliberately making people suffer."

"Yeaaaaah," Sparkle replied, lifting a shoulder. "I didn't say he was a good ethics teacher. But he is an interesting one."

If you enjoyed suffering.

"He sounds like a dick."

Sparkle shrugged. And then made a so-so gesture with his hand. And then nodded his head. And just held out both of his hands and continued nodding.

"And," he offered, "he's the dean."

Sparkle would never, ever deny that he often came from a place of deep bias and long-held grudges.

". . . Yeah, that scans," Mae decided. "People in power are usually dicks."

This kid was smart and Sparkle approved.

"Goes right to their heads," he agreed. "Every single time."

"That's why I plan never to be in charge of anything."

"Solid life choice," Sparkle replied, nodding solemnly. "It's way easier that way, trust me."

"Don't you run a store?"

"Yyyyyyyyyyyup," Sparkle agreed, popping that 'p' sound and then shrugging his shoulders. "Which sounds like it's all fun and games right up until you have to argue with the insurance company about whether or not falling sharks constitute an act of god. Fuck store ownership anyway."

... But also it was his and he was never letting it go. So.

"There's a whole . . . shark theme to this place, isn't there."

"It's rained them fucking twice," Sparkle bitched. "My heart wants to say no, but the weather says yes."
