Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It might have been the start of the fall semester, but it was definitely still summer in Fandom. The sun was shining and the temperature was already starting to get high, even as the NPC crew set things up for the day.

Luckily, the school knew how to take care of folks on days like today. Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with cold drinks and food, and an entire section devoted to offering up different moddable ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

With everything set up and the crew out of the way, it was time for the picnic to begin!

William placed his nametag on his suit jacket, and then began looking around for a 'Chuck'.

Helpfully, a Chuck was busy looking for him, peering at nametags. He was looking for a guy, he assumed from the William, so skipped the awkwardness of accidentally staring at any girl's chests before he found the one he was trying to find.

"Oh, hey just the guy I was looking for! ... I think. I'm Chuck. William Murdoch?" He had just babbled at the right William, right? Hopefully.

Of all the things in the world Dolf could have expected when he wandered down the causeway... a picnic wasn't one of them.

He looked a little shellshocked as he walked onto the grass, even more so when he found a little tag with his name on it lying somewhere in a stack. This wasn't the thirteenth century, that much he could tell: but it looked nothing like Dr. Simiak's lab, either.

Had something gone wrong?

When Jason had gotten notice that his new sibling's name was Dolf, he expected some hulking blonde guy with a funny accent. When he spotted the guy who took the nametag...well, he'd gotten the blonde part right, at least?

"Hi," he said, approaching the guy with a slight smile when he saw how he looked. "Are you okay?"

Kon, of course, made a beeline for the ice cream, grabbing the nametag only as an afterthought.

He looked to see who his Big Sibling was and grinned as he saw a name he recognized. Raven, huh? This was gonna be cool.

Raven, on the other hand, did not recognize the name she had been assigned as her little sibling. She'd been reluctant to leave Jono, but she didn't want to leave the new student without direction, so she'd handwavily gotten in touch with Ben to stay with him (and try to convince him to come to the picnic to meet his new roommate).

Ordinarily she stayed to the edges of these gatherings, not wishing to be overwhelmed by emotion, but she made sure her shields were strong and began to mingle with the crowd, looking for "Kon." The "S" on his shirt drew her attention before the name tag; he must be from her world if he wore such a tribute to Superman.

"Hello, Kon," she said with a smile. "I am Raven, and I am to be your big sibling here at Fandom High."

Kate was there early, with her little welcome basket in hand, smiling a little at all the new faces while keeping an eye out for anyone whose nametag said Robert.

She already had one Robert as a roommate. Maybe this would go well.

Except maybe if the guy happened to be way from the past and was going to be scandalized by her tank top and short skirt. But he'd just have to deal with those.

Bobby had lost Jack somewhere in the crowd, but that didn't deter him as he wandered around, looking at everything with great interest.

His nametag read Bobby McCallister, and he was just glad he'd escaped before someone Jack had written 'Dorkface' on it.

Forgive Percy if he was a little wary about this arrangement. The last time he'd been to something similar to this picnic, he'd ended up with two cheerleaders trying to kill him and blew up a band room.

He stuck a nametag to his shirt and looked around for someone named Kitty while trying not to think about how similar that sounded to Kelli.

Kitty had been wandering around for a while, peering at people's nametags and trying to be as unobtrusive as possible while staring at their chests to read, so she was more than happy to actually find someone with the right name. "So you're my little brother!" she said, smiling.

The stables had been rather strange, but Baru had seemed content and Faramir made a promise to check on him later before he left. It wasn't difficult to know where he needed to go, there was plenty of noise and people gathered.

For a moment, Faramir observed the others and then followed suit. He stared down at the little thin parchments that lay spread out on the table. It had to be some kind of script, but it looked so alien to him.

"What's your name?" A woman asked across the table with a sigh, as if she'd been doing this too many times.

"Faramir," he said slowly. She picked up one of the white parchments, then split it in two. Before Faramir could protest, she slapped him on his chest.

"There you go. Your big sib is Maladicta," she said.

"Big sib?" Faramir frowned down at the thing that was now attached to his leather jerkin. It covered up one of the seven stars and a part of the crown.

"Your big sister. She'll show you the ropes," the woman said, exasperated.

"I do not have a sister. Only a brother. His name is Boromir," Faramir objected. He had the feeling the woman wasn't listening to him anymore.

He carefully removed the thing from his jerkin and it stuck to his fingers, but it was the script that was puzzling him the most.

Which meant he was just lucky she had good eyes to see it. That and had been lurking casually waiting around for her 'sibling' to guide through the more interesting parts of fandom.

Sibling! New sibling! Man, Zack loved these things. He was already concocting plans to take his new sibling out for ice cream, and to take them out to the rocky bits to get a pet rock, and all sorts of big brotherly things!

He slapped a nametag on and kept an eye out for his newest little sib, looking, for all the world, like he'd just won the lottery or something.

Elphaba wasn't out to find her big sibling, really. The rush of the crowd wasn't something she particularly enjoyed. So if Zack was to spot her, nametag affixed crookedly to her shoulder (attaching it to her chest seemed improper), she was off to one side, sitting on her suitcase.

Having a school-assigned sibling couldn't be all bad after living at a camp with dozens of actual cousins. But the son of Hades wearing a nametag? That was crazytalk.

Still, he wouldn't disrespect the administration if nametags were what they wanted, so Nico stuck the label over the left eye of the skull decorating his t-shirt. Yeah, he was already blending in just great.

A big sibling? It sounded like fun! Zatanna needed someone to show her around, after all. And if said sibling knew about magic, all be the better.

Now she only needed to find this Diana Hansen person.

Diana was walking around with Samuel in her arms, readings people's chests. So it was a bit weird. "Zatanna?" She double checked as Samuel meowed a question.

Ben was in his Jedi robes, as usual, but with the addition of a nametag to identify who he was, arrived a little late because convincing Jono to come outside had taken some work. He scanned the unfamiliar faces, looking for someone wearing a "Cally" nametag.

But he'd help everyone else who also looked lost while keeping a careful eye on his other little sibling. He was a multitasker like that.

He might wait a while, if he kept looking for someone wearing a Cally nametag. There was someone picking up one and staring at it, however, looking more than a little dazed.

"I was expected?" she asked...anyone in the vicinity, really. Aloud; she'd gathered enough on the shuttle trip to wish to avoid other people's discomfort right now. Cally had enough of her own.

Alex was excited about getting a new little sibling. She grabbed her nametag, and made sure it was displayed in a spot that was easy to see. She scanned the crowd for George, wondering where he could be.

George had stared at the nametag table for a long time. She looked under Millie, under Hagen, even under Mildred.

And that's when she spotted "George." There had been a flicker of envy for whatever other-George out there got to be George -- probably a guy, and he was probably a loser -- while she kept looking for Millie.

No Millie. So ... she was George here? That was kind of weird. Maybe someone had listed it as a nickname, on her forms.

Fuck it. She grabbed the name tag that said "George" on it, and slapped it onto her shirt. If it was someone else's, they could make their own damn name tag.

And now, she was skimming the crowd, looking for some guy named Alex.

You would think a girl named George would have anticipated that Alex might be a girl. She'd have to blame the jet lag, for that one.

"Nametags," Jack said as he put his own on after checking to make sure that other people had theirs on. "Of course they have nametags." He had no idea whether Triela was a guy or a girl.

Spock was here, and looking about for anyone with a nametag designating them as 'Shira.' He was hypothesizing that it might be Japanese, but he knew better than to draw any conclusions without better evidence.
