Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It might have been the start of the fall semester, but it was definitely still summer in Fandom. The sun was shining and the temperature was already starting to get high, even as the NPC crew set things up for the day.

Luckily, the school knew how to take care of folks on days like today. Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with cold drinks and food, and an entire section devoted to offering up different moddable ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

With everything set up and the crew out of the way, it was time for the picnic to begin!

[Please wait for OCD! The OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Maladicta looked at the badge as well. "It is a bit messily written," she granted him helpfully.

Really.

He laughed softly and shook his head. "It is written in a script I've never seen before," he said. Perhaps, this was the most annoying thing to be different.

"Oh." At least he was literate back home? More than could be said for where Maladicta was from. "Perhaps the library will have something in what you're fluent in. If not, I don't think anyone would begrudge you time to learn to read their language."

"I shall have to look into it," he agreed and he held up the paper for her. "Do you know what this says?"

Maladicta smiled, wide and friendly. "Faramir. Perhaps we could make you a cipher for the letters?"

Now that she said it, it sounded so obvious that Faramir felt a little embarrassed having had to ask.

"So this is so people can know my name," he realised, "that is clever. And I believe a cipher could be of much help."

As long as there weren't insane letters in there. Or Dwarvish. Then they'd have to ask that Sergeant in town who Maladicta had yet to meet.

...this time.

"Then it will be easy for you. You ought to mention it to your teachers so they understand any difficulties you might have."

Faramir knew very little of Dwarvish himself, so they wouldn't have to trouble anyone. Unless there was someone who knew Tengwar.

Her suggestion did made him pause for an instant. He could too easily imagine his father's reaction to hearing his son would be starting at a disadvantage. No, it wasn't like he could help the script of this world. "I will make them aware if it causes any problems," he agreed. "I will have to visit the library soon and see if they can help me out."

"And you can always visit me if you need help with anything else." She could introduce him to coffee!

...fear for your sanity, Faramir. Fear.

Faramir was naive enough to think that if he survived his brother, he would survive anyone else. She was welcome to try and prove him wrong.

"Thank you," he said, giving her a small bow. "Your help is much appreciated."

Coffee was a more terrible lure than any magical rings!

"And if anyone tries to trick you, I suppose it's my duty as your sibling to threaten to harm them as well."

Faramir could very well take care of himself, but the thought amused him and he smiled at her. "If I meet any tricksters, I will make certain that they're aware they'll be facing your wrath," he promised.

"I can be terrifying," she assured him. Despite mostly just looking like a slick girl in men's clothing.

For all Faramir knew, she could very well be wearing women's clothing so really, she just looked like a slick girl to him.

"I wouldn't dare to doubt it," he assured her. "You did mention drinking blood."

"None for two years now," she replied cheerfully. "I've done very well with my control."

[identity profile] thinkbetterofme.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
And yet, two years seemed a very short time all of a sudden.

"What made you change your ways?" he asked. "If you don't mind my boldness in asking so."

"The Überwald League of Temperance," Maladicta replied. "If we wish to survive back home, the old ways are hardly plausible. There are more and more adventuring hero types running about, killing the idiots who try to subjugate the peasants near their castles."

Ah, vampires.

"And I think coffee is much more pleasant. Female vampires have expectations to live up to that I've never held with."

Do you know how hard it is to bathe in blood? Really, really hard.

Faramir didn't know, but he had a fair idea of how blood stuck to the skin and he didn't much like the feeling.

And yet, her motivations didn't speak of not wanting to harm others. She spoke of survival and her own preferences. He wondered if she was making light of the matter, or if those reasons simply didn't occur to her. Still, she did not feel malevolent to him.

"And how do you prove to those heroes that you have changed your ways?"

"By not killing them when the chance arises." A beat. "Or wearing a black ribbon and attending the meetings of support."

Maladicta smiled. "It's all rather relaxing. And no more corsets."

Look, that was the important thing to her.

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2010]

[identity profile] thinkbetterofme.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Corsets do appear to be very uncomfortable," Faramir agreed. "I would imagine anyone with sense would want to escape them."

"And that is why I believe you're a smarter man than most," Maladicta informed him.

[identity profile] thinkbetterofme.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Faramir looked amused, but he inclined his head in thanks for the compliment.

"I cannot deny that it can't be pleasing to the eye," he admitted. "I, however, have no desire to make anyone feel uncomfortable for such a brief delight."

"I'm sure there are women who do not mind," Maladicta replied, nodding her head. "But I am not one of them. "Trousers are far more practical."

And they rarely ripped in a manner that exposed as much leg as possible while still being family friendly.

"Then no man should hold that against you," Faramir decided. "For I am certain that they'd not enjoy wearing them either."

Boromir would be shaking his head at his brother now.

"...well..."

Look, maybe in Ankh-Morpork.
