Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It might have been the start of the fall semester, but it was definitely still summer in Fandom. The sun was shining and the temperature was already starting to get high, even as the NPC crew set things up for the day.

Luckily, the school knew how to take care of folks on days like today. Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with cold drinks and food, and an entire section devoted to offering up different ~~moddable~~ ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

With everything set up and the crew out of the way, it was time for the picnic to begin!

"I can be terrifying," she assured him. Despite mostly just looking like a slick girl in men's clothing.

For all Faramir knew, she could very well be wearing women's clothing so really, she just looked like a slick girl to him.

"I wouldn't dare to doubt it," he assured her. "You did mention drinking blood."

"None for two years now," she replied cheerfully. "I've done very well with my control."

And yet, two years seemed a very short time all of a sudden.

"What made you change your ways?" he asked. "If you don't mind my boldness in asking so."

"The Überwald League of Temperance," Maladicta replied. "If we wish to survive back home, the old ways are hardly plausible. There are more and more adventuring hero types running about, killing the idiots who try to subjugate the peasants near their castles."

Ah, vampires.

"And I think coffee is much more pleasant. Female vampires have expectations to live up to that I've never held with."

Do you know how hard it is to bathe in blood? Really, really hard.

Faramir didn't know, but he had a fair idea of how blood stuck to the skin and he didn't much like the feeling.

And yet, her motivations didn't speak of not wanting to harm others. She spoke of survival and her own preferences. He wondered if she was making light of the matter, or if those reasons simply didn't occur to her. Still, she did not feel malevolent to him.

"And how do you prove to those heroes that you have changed your ways?"

"By not killing them when the chance arises." A beat. "Or wearing a black ribbon and attending the meetings of support."

Maladicta smiled. "It's all rather relaxing. And no more corsets."

Look, that was the important thing to her.

"Corsets do appear to be very uncomfortable," Faramir agreed. "I would imagine anyone with sense would want to escape them."

"And that is why I believe you're a smarter man than most," Maladicta informed him.

Faramir looked amused, but he inclined his head in thanks for the compliment.

"I cannot deny that it can't be pleasing to the eye," he admitted. "I, however, have no desire to make anyone feel uncomfortable for such a brief delight."

"I'm sure there are women who do not mind," Maladicta replied, nodding her head. "But I am not one of them. "Trousers are far more practical."

And they rarely ripped in a manner that exposed as much leg as possible while still being family friendly.

"Then no man should hold that against you," Faramir decided. "For I am certain that they'd not enjoy wearing them either."

Boromir would be shaking his head at his brother now.

"...well..."

Look, maybe in Ankh-Morpork.

"And if they do, I do not wish to know," Faramir added quickly, shaking his head at the thought. His mind had enough to deal with, it did not need such a strange image.

"Probably for the best," she admitted, patting him on the arm.

"I much agree," he chuckled. "And I shall thank you for changing the subject."

Because Fandom brought the crazy to all conversations. "Have you found everything so far?"

"I have found the stables," he said. "A girl showed me the way there and assured me it was safe to keep Baru there while I'm staying here. Are there other places I should know of?"

That had been his chief concern, yes.

"The town has places for you to shop, should the need arise."

He wondered if he should be buying new clothes (no corsets, thank you very much), but there seemed so much to get used to that he let the question lie for the time being.

"I shall have to explore," he said. "I only passed through it briefly. I did notice there were soldiers patrolling."

"Ah, I believe those are watchmen, actually." Which was similar to military, but with less fighting.

In her opinion, at least.

"They were very well armoured to be merely watchmen," Faramir reasoned.

"If you could call it armor." It was shiny. In the wrong way.

"It appeared to be used for such reasons," Faramir observed. "Even if it didn't look like the armour from my world."

"Or mine. I think it's also made of oil," Maladicta replied. Magic, magic oil.
