fandomhigh | Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It might have been the start of the fall semester, but it was definitely still summer in Fandom. The sun was shining and the temperature was already starting to get high, even as the NPC crew set things up for the day.

Luckily, the school knew how to take care of folks on days like today. Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with cold drinks and food, and an entire section devoted to offering up different ~~moddable~~ ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

With everything set up and the crew out of the way, it was time for the picnic to begin!

"I have found the stables," he said. "A girl showed me the way there and assured me it was safe to keep Baru there while I'm staying here. Are there other places I should know of?"

That had been his chief concern, yes.

"The town has places for you to shop, should the need arise."

He wondered if he should be buying new clothes (no corsets, thank you very much), but there seemed so much to get used to that he let the question lie for the time being.

"I shall have to explore," he said. "I only passed through it briefly. I did notice there were soldiers patrolling."

"Ah, I believe those are watchmen, actually." Which was similar to military, but with less fighting.

In her opinion, at least.

"They were very well armoured to be merely watchmen," Faramir reasoned.

"If you could call it armor." It was shiny. In the wrong way.

"It appeared to be used for such reasons," Faramir observed. "Even if it didn't look like the armour from my world."

"Or mine. I think it's also made of oil," Maladicta replied. Magic, magic oil.

"Like the table," Faramir blinked. "Is everything here made of oil?"

"Or imps! They have these devices that allow you to talk to someone a fair distance away."

The devices he could match with the palantíri in his world, but...

"Imps?" Faramir asked.

"In their 'telephones'. We have the clacks system back home, but they're not nearly as small."

"I..." Faramir blinked. "I'm afraid that you have completely lost me."

"You can talk to someone from a large distance without needing the post," Maladicta tried again.

"But what are imps? Or clacks?" he asked, because he had a need to know all.

"You don't have imps?" That was just odd. "They're small beasts that can run the smaller machines. Clacks are... clacks. They're like signals along a line that you transmit messages."

"We do not have imps," Faramir confirmed, tilting his head in thought. "So it is like a code in sound?"

He wasn't certain about the latter. Naming something clack suggested sound, at least he thought it did, but how would one transmit sound through a rope?

"Lights, I believe." They weren't used too much in Borogravia. An abomination unto Nuggan and all.

"More like beacons then?" he asked. "We have beacons ourselves, to alert our allies when we are hard pressed for their help."

"Home was too... volatile to have allies." Oh, Borogravia. "Though, luckily they assure us Nuggan is dead."

"Nuggan was your enemy?" he guessed.

"God, actually!" A beat. "Well, not mine, but the one of the country."

"You were waging war with a God?" Faramir blinked. That sounded complicated.

"No, but the echoes of him was leading it." In a way. Look, things here could be more confusing than Middle Earth. THEIR DWARVES ALL HAD BEARDS AND THEIR ELVES WERE PSYCHOTIC.

Yeah well, you try getting stuck in a living forest and have to be rescued by some weird with a feather on his head who sings his way through life.

"I'm uncertain what would be an echo of a god," he admitted, "but I have a feeling there might be a long answer behind it."

Not that Faramir minded long answers.
