Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It might have been the start of the fall semester, but it was definitely still summer in Fandom. The sun was shining and the temperature was already starting to get high, even as the NPC crew set things up for the day.

Luckily, the school knew how to take care of folks on days like today. Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with cold drinks and food, and an entire section devoted to offering up different moddable ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

With everything set up and the crew out of the way, it was time for the picnic to begin!

[Please wait for OCD! The OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Yeah, that happens," Kitty said sympathetically. "But sometimes it kind of helps to like know someone, even if they're not from the same timeline or whatever. Who is it that you know?"

"Just...someone from home," he said, brushing it away. "What exactly does a big sibling do here?"

Hopefully the answer wasn't 'try and kill him.'

"Well, I get to answer all your questions, or at least like the ones I know the answers to, and help you settle in a little, and give the usual warnings about the weird stuff that happens here, which with that whole 'someone from home' thing I'm betting you're already clued in on," she replied. "I mean, that's what I'm planning to do. They didn't give me like a handbook or anything."

"Usual warnings?" Percy asked, immediately feeling his guard raise at that. "What warnings?"

"Uhh. Sometimes people turn into animals randomly? And I guess the town just got invaded by singing bugs?" She'd hold off on the 'getting sucked into nightmarish worlds via void' till she saw how he handled that.

"Singing bugs?" That...didn't sound so bad. It sounded stupidly silly, in fact, and Percy almost grinned. "They weren't aggressive?"

"Not that I know of. I think the town just likes to throw quirky little things at you to like keep you on your toes. Or keep you earwormed," she said, considering this.

"You said something about other weird stuff?" Percy asked curiously. "How weird?"

She frowned a little. Okay, a lot. "So there was this thing like a month ago where there were these voids popping up everywhere? And some of us got pulled into like alternate dimensions or whatever. But it all got fixed, no worries!" She so didn't want to freak him out on day one.

Percy didn't freak out. He was of the mind that he never freaked out even if that was wrong. Still, his brow furrowed and his eyes narrowed.

"What caused that to happen?" he asked.

"I didn't actually hear like the whole story? But I guess like, the island broke or something. I think it's fixed now, though," she said quickly, "because we're here."

"The island broke?" Percy knew that repeating everything someone else said was annoying but really, this place was almost too much and he came from a place with centaurs, nymphs and satyrs. "How does a piece of land break? Earthquake?"

"I think it was a mechanical issue? I did mention this place is a little weird, right?" she said.

[identity profile] seaweed-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mechanical issue." Well, he was still repeating things but at least he hadn't made this a question. More like a statement of disbelief.

Hephaestus couldn't have made an island, could he? The god was talented but a mechanical island was ambitious.

"And it's fixed now?"

"I think so," she said, nodding in an attempt to look confident.

And then thinking about that, she tilted her head at him and realized something. "You know, you look a little like this guy who goes here."

"I don't have any relatives here." Oh yes, he did, but he wasn't letting that secret out. He was related to way too many people here. "How similar?"

[identity profile] notavalleygirl.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"...Pretty darn similar," Kitty decided. "You'll probably know him when you see him."

[identity profile] seaweed-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"We're not related," he said, wanting to stop that thought in its tracks. "I don't have any siblings."

Just a lot of cousins.

"Maybe it's just a quirk," she decided. "So where are you from, Percy? The here and now?"

[identity profile] seaweed-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"New York," he answered. "And...the here and now? I guess I'm from the here and now."

[identity profile] notavalleygirl.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"It has to be asked," she confirmed. "What part of New York? I went to school in Bayville."

[identity profile] seaweed-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"All over, really," Percy answered considering he'd been through school after school after school. "I don't think I managed to get up to Bayville. Last place I was at was Goode High School near the East River. Know it?"

"Haven't heard of it," she said. "But still, it's always nice to know someone from up that way." She was from Illinois, dammit.

"I wasn't there long." Because, you know, the band room. "How'd you end up down here?"

"There was like an incident at my old school. My parents thought I should maybe be somewhere not there," she explained. "It's been cool, though. The people are really cool, and it stays interesting."
