Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It might have been the start of the fall semester, but it was definitely still summer in Fandom. The sun was shining and the temperature was already starting to get high, even as the NPC crew set things up for the day.

Luckily, the school knew how to take care of folks on days like today. Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with cold drinks and food, and an entire section devoted to offering up different moddable ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

With everything set up and the crew out of the way, it was time for the picnic to begin!

[Please wait for OCD! The OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]
vanillajello: (Let it shine through.)

Kate smirked a bit at his reaction. "Yeah, I know, that kinda shocks a lot of people," she said. "But yeah, we have co-ed rooming. And I doubt anyone's gonna mix you two up."

The face would be a bigger problem, if anything. "But you could always be Bobby Junior?"

"I'm kinda already Bobby Junior," he explained excitedly. "Jack and I were named after our dad. He was an archeologist. From Chile." Too much information, Bobby. "Have you met Jack? Girls usually like him."
vanillajello: (All amused at you.)

Aww. He was making it very easy for Kate to keep smiling at him.

"No, not yet," she said. "But I'll have to keep an eye out for him. So you came with your brother, huh? That should make things easier."

She got a big smile in reply. "Yeah, mom wouldn't've let me come except that Jack convinced her. Jack's really cool. I think he's bummed about having to leave Truman though. He just started dating Courtney Benedict over the summer, and I bet he's going to miss her."

Jack might miss Courtney, but he also might murder Bobby when he heard him telling people.
vanillajello: (Yeah right.)

That thought crossed Kate's mind, too. "Well, if girls like him so much, I'm sure he'll get over it," she said with a light snicker. "So, can I ask you... Where exactly you're from?"

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hart, Missouri," Bobby replied without hesitation. "My mom's a professor at the university there. Where are you from?"
vanillajello: (Sitting and looking to the left.)

"Overland Park, Kansas," Kate replied. So, like she'd already gathered, at least he was from Earth, and the States. That made everything a bit easier, at least.

But not totally easy.

"Okay, this is gonna sound a little weird, but bear with me, okay?" She hated having to do this part, but it was her job. "What time are you from? Like, uh, what year do you think it is?"

"Kansas! That's like right next door!" Bobby informed her. In case she didn't already know. "Mom totally said there'd only be East Coast snobs at a prep school. She disapproves of that." He tilted his head a little at the question. "It's 2005. I'm 14."
vanillajello: (Trophy wife practice.)

[personal profile] vanillajello 2010-08-28 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh. I'm 16," Kate said, as if that would soften the blow that was coming.

"It's 2010." Beat. "You're still 14."

"...it's 2010?" he repeated, not totally sure he believed her. "Well, who's the President then?"
vanillajello: (My lip does this thing.)

[personal profile] vanillajello 2010-08-28 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Barack Obama," Kate replied, and somehow refrained from adding 'and thank fuck for that'. "And yeah, it really is 2010. I'm sorry, but on the bright side, some people are even more time-displaced than you are."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2010]

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"The Senator from Illinois who made that awesome speech at the Convention?" Bobby asked, impressed. Oh, the geeky things a kid picked up when Grace McCallister was his mother. "I think I like 2010."
vanillajello: (That vaguely excited look.)

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2010]

[personal profile] vanillajello 2010-08-28 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"I... guess that would be him, yeah," Kate said, amused and a little impressed by the knowledge, too. Didn't run into too many 14-year-old who were geeky about politics.

"You're taking this really well, so far," she had to add. "Which is good, 'cause the time thing isn't the only weird thing around here."

It really wasn't.

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2010]

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"What else is weird?" Bobby asked, tentatively but no less excitedly. And to think that mom thought this was going to be a snobby prep school! "You know, they don't say anything about it being weird in all the brochures and stuff."
vanillajello: (Not really.)

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2010]

[personal profile] vanillajello 2010-08-28 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, the broschures are kind of crap. I've been thinking about maybe campaigning to get them changed."

But then they'd probably get no students. Or they'd only get the completely insane ones.

"I don't even know where to begin," Kate said, shaking her head. "Um, well, that time travel thing? That's because Fandom's kind of like this... hub for different dimensions and worlds and times and whatever."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2010]

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
And now Bobby was looking at her a little more skeptically. "Different dimensions," he repeated. "Like in Wormhole Extreme?"
vanillajello: (Maybe I disagree.)

[personal profile] vanillajello 2010-08-28 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"Kinda," Kate said, looking almost apologetic about it. "It's pretty confusing, so I don't tend to really think about it. The point is that here, cultural diversity is... really seriously diverse."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2010]

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
He was still considering it. "Well, that's gotta be a good thing, right? It's good to know a lot of people from other places."
vanillajello: (Big sister knows better.)

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2010]

[personal profile] vanillajello 2010-08-28 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's educational, at least, yes," she agreed. "And this is a pretty... interesting place to live in, otherwise too."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2010]

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Bobby grinned at her. "I think it's going to be awesome."
vanillajello: (Better times.)

[personal profile] vanillajello 2010-08-28 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's that kind of a lot of the time," Kate allowed. "But I should probably warn you about the... random temporary transformations and weird weather patterns and stuff."

The invasions? Kate had kind of decided to be a coward and either let the kid find out about those from someone else, or she'd tell him later. Not now.

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"...you're going to have to explain more," Bobby told her. "Is there something that makes the weather weird? You probably don't get a ton of snow here, do you? The ocean usually moderates average temperature."
vanillajello: (Not really.)

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2010]

[personal profile] vanillajello 2010-08-28 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, actually, we had a huge blizzard last winter," Kate replied, after a thoughtful pause. "Knocked the power out for a weekend, which sucked. But, what I meant was more like... things that aren't supposed to come down from the sky, coming down from the sky."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2010]

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"...like frogs?" he asked. "We had a huge blizzard last winter too. A bunch of kids got stuck in my house and...um, yeah, not the point."
vanillajello: (Yeah right.)

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2010]

[personal profile] vanillajello 2010-08-28 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, not frogs." Yet. Oh God how she hoped they hadn't just been jinxed. "More like syrup. And Pop Tarts." Beat. "Not at the same time."

Because that made a difference. Right.
