fandomhigh | Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It might have been the start of the fall semester, but it was definitely still summer in Fandom. The sun was shining and the temperature was already starting to get high, even as the NPC crew set things up for the day.

Luckily, the school knew how to take care of folks on days like today. Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with cold drinks and food, and an entire section devoted to offering up different ~~moddable~~ ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

With everything set up and the crew out of the way, it was time for the picnic to begin!

Bobby grinned at her. "I think it's going to be awesome."

"It's that kind of a lot of the time," Kate allowed. "But I should probably warn you about the... random temporary transformations and weird weather patterns and stuff."

The invasions? Kate had kind of decided to be a coward and either let the kid find out about those from someone else, or she'd tell him later. Not now.

"...you're going to have to explain more," Bobby told her. "Is there something that makes the weather weird? You probably don't get a ton of snow here, do you? The ocean usually moderates average temperature."

"Well, actually, we had a huge blizzard last winter," Kate replied, after a thoughtful pause. "Knocked the power out for a weekend, which sucked. But, what I meant was more like... things that aren't supposed to come down from the sky, coming down from the sky."

"...like frogs?" he asked. "We had a huge blizzard last winter too. A bunch of kids got stuck in my house and...um, yeah, not the point."

"No, not frogs." Yet. Oh God how she hoped they hadn't just been jinxed. "More like syrup. And Pop Tarts." Beat. "Not at the same time."

Because that made a difference. Right.

Bobby was still doubtful. "The organic kind of Pop Tarts or regular ones?"

It made a difference, okay?

"As far as I could tell, every possible kind you could imagine." Pause. "Possibly a few you couldn't.. Is that somehow important?"

"Well, yeah!" Bobby exclaimed. "The organic kind are crap!"

Kate couldn't help laughing a bit at that. "Yeah, they kinda are. But most we got that day were about as processed as they could possibly be. Also, if it happens again? Get an umbrella. Those suckers hurt if they hit you."

"They hurt if they're thrown at you too," he agreed, grinning.

"Someone threw Pop Tarts at you?" she had to ask. "Let me guess, it was your brother?"

"Yup," Bobby agreed. "Jack's really good at sports and stuff. Well, he hurt his knee so he can't run so much anymore, but he used to be awesome."

"Yeah well, we don't have a sports team, anyway," Kate said, shrugging a shoulder. "We have cheerleaders, but no sports team, which is kinda backwards."

Bobby snickered. "Maybe I can convince him that the tryouts are really for a sports team."

"It's worth a shot," Kate smirked, not one to miss out on teasing siblings.

"And you can get pictures and-- Ooh, I almost forgot! Here," she said, offering him the small basket she'd been holding. "It's kind of a welcome gift basket with a few useful things."

"Oh wow!" Bobby nearly bounced with pleasure at the present. "Thank you! This is so cool. You're totally awesome, Kate! Wow. I totally have the best fake big sibling ever!"

Okay, Kate was totally beaming at him, now, like a happy dork. It was nice to be appreciated!

"Thanks," she said. "I was gonna bake something, too, but I figured we get so much food here I can just do that sometime later."

"Okay, well, you'd officially be my favorite person in the world if you made cookies," Bobby said dorkily.

Seriously. Cookies!

"Oh I can totally make cookies," Kate nodded, smiling. "I can even call up my brother and ask him for one of his super secret tweaked recipes. My little brother's kind of awesome in the kitchen."

"Yeah? Does he cook a lot?" Bobby asked curiously. "I can make...like frozen pizza. But usually Jack does it."

"He cooks a lot," Kate said, nodding emphatically. "Living with my brother is like living with, like, a gourmet chef, sometimes. Of course, he says it's all wasted on me 'cause I like junk food."

"Who doesn't like junk food?" he replied. "I mean, my mom doesn't, but she only likes natural and healthy stuff and usually it tastes gross."

"Well, my brother's kind of a snob," she shrugged. "But he cooks well, so I forgive him."
