Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It might have been the start of the fall semester, but it was definitely still summer in Fandom. The sun was shining and the temperature was already starting to get high, even as the NPC crew set things up for the day.

Luckily, the school knew how to take care of folks on days like today. Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with cold drinks and food, and an entire section devoted to offering up different moddable ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

With everything set up and the crew out of the way, it was time for the picnic to begin!

[Please wait for OCD! The OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I have started to suspect something like that," he admitted. "There were many interesting sights when I made my way up here."

He looked a little uncertain at her offered hand. It was a gesture between soldiers, but he meant no offence and so he reached out, gripping her forearm above the wrist. "Well met, Lady Maladicta."

"There's no need for formality," Maladicta replied, gripping his arm back with more force than someone her size should strictly have.

"We are family now, after all," she added teasingly.

Formality and being kin weren't exclusive in Faramir's world, but he nodded nonetheless. If this was how Fandom worked, he would adapt. Her grip surprised him, but not in a bad way.

"So it would seem," he said, "the lady said you'd be showing me the ropes. Whichever ropes that might be."

Oh, where to even start.

"What is your home like, first of all?"

How did one describe a world that was all he knew only a few hours ago.

"It is much different from this one," he said slowly, taking his time to find the words he sought. "I'm from the kingdom Gondor, though we've not had a king in many centuries. Times are becoming darker, we find our borders more and more tested by Sauron's servants."

He stopped. "No, that is perhaps not what you want to hear. There's things here that look close to what I'm used to, but they're not the same. Even this very table, it'd be made of wood in my world, but here..." He shrugged a shoulder. "I do not know if this makes much sense."

Maladicta nodded in understanding. "Plastic, I believe it's called. Which is made from oil somehow."

She was assuming magic. Magic usually did the silly things.

"Oil can be made into something hard?" Faramir mused aloud at the table for an instant. "I have a feeling that there are many marvels in this world."

So, so many!

"Tell me, do you have indoor plumbing where you are from?"

"Indoor plumbing?" Faramir repeated, which would constitute as a no, he hadn't.

"I think," Maladicta said carefully. "This is something you'll rather like then. If your home is anything like mine."

"What is your home like then?" he asked, curious now.

"Castles, wars..." Maladicta shrugged. "I think it's very similar to many worlds."

A beat.

"Do you have vampires where you are from?"

So this was less of a shock and all.

[identity profile] thinkbetterofme.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Castles and wars sound familiar enough," he replied, "but I haven't heard of vampires. What are they?"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2010]

[identity profile] inneedofcoffee.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Traditionally," Maladicta replied. "They're creatures who drink blood to survive. But that's all in the past."

For some. Kinda.

"I drink coffee instead."

[identity profile] thinkbetterofme.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Creatures who drink blood fitted right into the ones that Sauron would be gathering and Faramir for a moment wondered if perhaps they did exist under another name.

"I do not know what coffee is, but it does sound better than drinking blood," he said slowly. He couldn't help that for an instant, his hand drifted to his sword.

Maladicta only glanced down the once before shaking her head. "Less of a mess, as well." It was a smart reaction, at least. "You will meet others here who are more or less than human. They have yet to harm anyone as far as I know."

[identity profile] thinkbetterofme.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yet?" he questioned, because the word was hard to ignore. "Are you of the opinion that they will do so?"

[identity profile] inneedofcoffee.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"I am of the opinion that anyone is capable of it." She glanced down at his sword again. "You're a soldier then?"

"Out of necessity," he said, making his hand drop from the pommel of his sword. "As I said, I am familiar with wars and as the son of the Steward, it is my duty to defend my city and the people in it. If it were a different time, I would rather use my time to study the arts, but that is a luxury that isn't given to us now."

"We do have a library here, if that is more to your liking," Maladicta replied with a toothy grin. "And a group that works to defend the island from the more unusual things."

Faramir raised an eyebrow. "Those both sound of interest to me," he said, but he glanced down at the little parchment that was still sticking to his fingers. "Though if they are all written in this script, that might be somewhat of a problem."

Maladicta looked at the badge as well. "It is a bit messily written," she granted him helpfully.

Really.

He laughed softly and shook his head. "It is written in a script I've never seen before," he said. Perhaps, this was the most annoying thing to be different.

"Oh." At least he was literate back home? More than could be said for where Maladicta was from. "Perhaps the library will have something in what you're fluent in. If not, I don't think anyone would begrudge you time to learn to read their language."

"I shall have to look into it," he agreed and he held up the paper for her. "Do you know what this says?"
