Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It might have been the start of the fall semester, but it was definitely still summer in Fandom. The sun was shining and the temperature was already starting to get high, even as the NPC crew set things up for the day.

Luckily, the school knew how to take care of folks on days like today. Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with cold drinks and food, and an entire section devoted to offering up different ~~moddable~~ ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

With everything set up and the crew out of the way, it was time for the picnic to begin!

Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Frost, darling. Emma Frost. I'm your school-assigned 'big sister,'" she said, offering her hand. "Do you often cause your cousin to faint?"

Frost was certainly what she'd be feeling when he took her hand. Something about death made Nico's skin rather cool to the touch. "Only when we travel together," he replied. "So you'll be showing me around, Miss Frost?" She'd started it, calling him Mister.

His temperature only merited a raised eyebrow and smirk, for now, and Emma gave a careless shrug. "Do you need to be shown around?" she asked. "Or have the resident inmates already been hazing you with tales of the asylum?"

She didn't say anything about it and then called Fandom an asylum. Nico was weirded out. "So this is where they send the freaks?" Figured.

Her smirk grew, and Emma threw back her head and laughed. "Oh, darling," she gasped, beaming at him brightly as she let herself shift. "You have no idea, do you?"

"Welcome to Fandom. Home of the freaks, the misfits, the time-tossed, and the chronically misplaced. I would say we're one big happy family, but I rather loathe my family in all honesty."

"Great! So far I've met the time-tossed and the misplaced. Next you're gonna tell me we're never bored to make up for everyone being freaks?" Sounded like Camp Half-Blood, minus the armor.

"Oh please. There's enough teenage melodrama and angst to bore even one of those tweeny goths from the mall to tears," she said, rolling her eyes and changing back. "One, it's boarding school. Some boredom is practically required, but if the tedium proves too much to bear, make your own fun."

"The bar in town doesn't card and doesn't care, the rooms are co-ed, and there's no resident adviser in the dorms. If it's hitting things you prefer, there's people that get together to enjoy mindless violence on a regular basis under the guise of 'reserves' meetings and such. If you can't amuse yourself, you aren't even trying."

"Two, if you ever use the term 'freak' as an insult in my hearing --" which was important, because Emma didn't care if he said it to people she disliked, and she didn't hang around people she didn't care about, "-- I will go into your brain, earworm you with early eighties pop music, and leave you with a craving for eating bugs for the rest of the day. There's a few mundanes wandering around campus, but really, darling. I'd rather be fabulous any day."

She talked a lot. Nico got lost somewhere around the word 'reserves' trying to figure out why there was an army on the island and snapped back into focus when she started threatening to go into his brain. "What's eighties pop music?"

"Eighties. Pop. Tiffany. Unless you loathe Dutch metal bands or something, I'm sure I could find some way to oblige you," she replied.

"So you punish people by putting music in their head? Is that like magic or just a really loud stereo system?" Nico asked with interest.

"Science, darling, I punish people with Science," she replied, utterly deadpan as she wriggled her fingers at him. "Thank to whims of my DNA, I'm a telepath."

"Telepath? I've never known any demigod with that power," he considered. "Have you been claimed?"

"Claimed?" Seriously? "Any who thinks they can 'claim' me is in for a rather nasty shock."

"...I meant your parentage?" What a reaction.

"Winston and Hazel Frost, Boston, and yes, if you've heard of Frost Enterprises it's that Frost Enterprises," she replied warily. "Although given how well Winston and I get along, I rather assume I've been disowned by now rather than being claimed as a member of the family."

Considering how hard Nico had worked in his life to be accepted by various parts of his family, he didn't get that at all. "Riiiiiight."

"What is that supposed to mean?" she asked, annoyance creeping into her tone.

"It means we seem to have differences in how we deal with family," Nico returned. Search for enough years and you'll cling to whatever you find.

"You're the one that inquired about my parentage for no particular reason," Emma pointed out. "Although I still don't understand what that has to do with me being claimed or whatever."

"You have powers," Nico said like this was the obvious explanation. "I wondered which god had claimed you as their child."

"You're from a magic world, aren't you? Karla's going to lap you up like a cat let loose in the creamery," she sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose.

"I met Thor once, but he didn't proclaim any of us his offspring or anything like that. I'm the next step in human evolution, not any sort of godling," she explained. "Although given your reaction, I'm guessing you are."

"Demigod," he said, distracted by thoughts of getting lapped up by anyone...

"Demigod. Seriously. What pantheon...."

Emma trailed off and sighed. She didn't need to be a telepath to read that face, and she rolled her eyes, snapping her fingers in front of him. "Earth to heavenly pervert," she sang. "I was asking you a question."

[Being abducted for dinner with ninjas, back in a few hours!]

"Huh?" Nico rewound her words trying to give up an answer. "Oh. Ancient Greek?"
