Archery Workshop #2, 5/30, Danger Shop, Afternoon

The Danger Shop is set up like an outdoor archery field this week, with fifteen targets, fifteen bows, and fifteen quivers of arrows. The arrows, the students will find, are tipped with suction cups. Off to one side is Miho, lounging in a lawn chair with an umbrella. On the table next to it is the sign-in sheet. An incongruous freestanding blackboard is set up next to her, with the words Beginning Archery. Shoot the targets. Leave when you are done. written on it.

Miho gets up, takes up her own bow and a suction cup arrow, and demonstrates for the class by shooting at the first target in the line. Bullseye. Then she returns to her seat, picks up her glass of lemonade, and watches for any errors in form she'll need to correct.

Bel was disappointed to find suction cups instead of pointy things. Nevertheless, he choose a bow and began to fire. Missing the target by a mile in his first few attempts.

Dawn looked at the arrow, then back at Miho, but decided not to argue the suction cups. She took aim, fired, and hit the target first try. Unfortunately, the arrows were lighter than she was used to, so her aim was off.

Isabel blinked at the suction cups then shrugged. She loaded an arrow into the bow, focused on the target, and shot. She did not squee when she hit the target. At least not out loud.

Gwynn spent a great deal of time examining the arrow with the weird things at the end of it. She had never seen anything like these and she failed to see their function as anything useful.

On her first try, she hit the target, but her aim was off because of the weight difference between the suction cup arrows and the arrows she used on a regular basis.

Frowning, she spent a few shots getting used to the weird arrows and started making stance adjustments because of it.

Finally, she started firing with her usual accuracy and assurance.

Buffy didn't care that it was just suction cup arrows. It was still shooting stuff, and shooting stuff was fun! Ready, aim, fire!

Okay, so suction cups weren't exactly the kind of arrows Sam was hoping for, but at least they were getting to shoot. It took him a few shots to figure out what kind of aim gap he was working with before he finally started hitting the target.

Molly had never used a bow before. So, first thing, she spent a few minutes testing the pull to see how much strength she could use without breaking it. Satisfied that she knew how hard to pull, she knocked her first arrow and fired.

Amazingly, she hit the target. Too bad it wasn't inside any of the rings. A few more shots and she was able to keep them all inside the actual target, but none of them were consistent.

Alanna's first short wound up flying over the target. Her second shot made it on the target at least. By her tenth shot, she was fairly constantly hitting withing a few inches of the bullseye.

While the bow is awkward and strange, there's a vibrant flush to Sakurazaki's face, absolutely delighted to have a weapon in her hand again. But she's never used a bow, so she takes a moment to watch and listen to the others, soaking in any helpful tidbits while she takes a moment and gathers her chi.

It takes a few tries before she gets the hang of it, but she eventually figures it out and her shots are pretty good for a beginner. She wonders if anyone can tell that she's using Shinmei Ryuu wind magic to help them get as far as they do, though. She hopes not.

She considers the idea of trying a full on Shinmei Ryuu technique at the very end of class, but figures that attempting to channel the energy that helps a nodachi blow apart a rock with wind alone into an arrow on the second day is probably not a good idea. However, the thought will amuse Sakurazaki through the entire day.

Dean? Very glad today that shooting arrows is significantly quieter than shooting guns. He was also very glad that archery is an afternoon class as even bowstrings that morning would have been too much.

Between the leftover hangover effects and the difference in weight in the arrows, it took him more shots than he'd like to admit to find the target's range. Although after he did, he hit the target far more than he missed.

Re: Shoot Things

[identity profile] connernotconnor.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Conner wasn't too surprised to see the suction cups on the arrows (thanks so much, weird Disney broadcasting standards regarding fired projectiles) but everybody else was giving them weird looks, so he did too. Just because it seemed like the thing to do.

He'd always been more of a melee weapon type of guy, except for that whole laser sidearm thing (again, thanks, Disney broadcasting standards) so this kind of fine-motor-skill precision was new. Not to mention the fact that this was going to be something he was learning for himself, and not a magically-granted ability. So he was a little hesitant as he nocked the arrow and drew back the bowstring for the first shot.

It went wide of the mark, though he had to admit that nicking the edge of the target with the fletching as the arrow went past wasn't too bad, all things considered.

He tried a second shot, this time paying closer attention to the feel of the bowstring's tension and making sure to keep his fingers out of the way; he hit the edge of the target this time. Successive shots never quite hit close to the bullseye, but all things considered, most of them ended up around the middle of the target, which wasn't terrible.

Plus, his fingers were unscathed. This was a good thing.

Parker cocked a dubious eyebrow at Miho, but didn't fight it. She carefully lined up the arrow, and shot at the target. The stance is right, but the balance took a while to get used to. She didn't do badly after that.

Re: Shoot Things

[identity profile] sakuracchyan.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
She's shot an arrow before, but Sakura supposed that having your bow influenced by a magical spirit of an odd-sized card with your name on it probably made the circumstances a little different. She fidgets with the suction-cupped arrows for a moment, and took an even longer time watching the target and trying to convince the arrow to hit it.

She succeeded, though far from splendidly. But, hitting the target was better than having it fly off and disappear somewhere behind it. She sighed, and reached into her quiver for another arrow.

Sakurazaki is failing miserably when she tries to see if she can draw the arrows and shoot them quickly like she's seen Mana-san do with her rounds of bullets, but the rare smile on her face shows that she doesn't really care because, yes, she is having fun. Good Lord, there's even a laugh in there, and the occational grin at her fellow shooters.

Re: Talk Amongst Yourselves

[identity profile] sakuracchyan.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
She wasn't talking to anyone in particular, but Sakura was most definately talking.

"Kero would kill me for this," she muttered, shaking her head and taking aim with her third, or was it fourth? arrow. "Kill me as dead as a tiny flying teddy bear could manage." After she'd shot the arrow and gotten considerably closer to what she might consider 'doing well' -- still four rings away from the bullseye, but better -- she waved her next arrow about in the air as she talked to herself. "'You should pull out your cards, Sakura' he'd say," Her next comment came with a grand sweep of the suction-cupped arrow. "'Show your teacher what you can do!' Yeah well that's cheating, Kero..."

No, she wasn't talking to herself. Much less was she talking to her 'pet' who wasn't even present.
