Archery Workshop #2, 5/30, Danger Shop, Afternoon

The Danger Shop is set up like an outdoor archery field this week, with fifteen targets, fifteen bows, and fifteen quivers of arrows. The arrows, the students will find, are tipped with suction cups. Off to one side is Miho, lounging in a lawn chair with an umbrella. On the table next to it is the sign-in sheet. An incongruous freestanding blackboard is set up next to her, with the words Beginning Archery. Shoot the targets. Leave when you are done. written on it.

Miho gets up, takes up her own bow and a suction cup arrow, and demonstrates for the class by shooting at the first target in the line. Bullseye. Then she returns to her seat, picks up her glass of lemonade, and watches for any errors in form she'll need to correct.

"Try pulling the bowstring back a little more," Sam suggested. "If you put more force into the shooting, the arrow will hit harder and probably stick better."

"See, now that sounds useful," Dawn said, doing as instructed, "as opposed to my licking it, which also makes sense, but adds that 'ew' factor which I'm trying to avoid."

She pulled the bowstring back to her shoulder, then let the arrow fly. "It stuck!" She bounced, then grinned at Sam. "Thanks!"

Sam grinned back, feeling rather pleased with himself. "No problem. Although, I have to say that licking it would probably work too." No, there were no dirty intentions behind that, really.

And Dawn was back to looking skeptically at the arrow. "I think I should stick to licking my own arrows, don't you?"

That kind of statement really wasn't helping keep Sam's mind clean. "I guess you're right. These are sort of community arrows," he admitted.

"And you've seen this community," she snickered, "so, yeah, no licking. And possibly antiseptic soap later. What about you? What have you been up to?"

Visions of the previous night flashed through Sam's mind, and he focused down on his own arrows in the hopes of preventing any blushing. "Not much. It was a pretty low-key weekend, aside from nearly everyone in Seahorse getting drunk last night."

Dawn made a face. "Blech. Why would you do that?"

"I don't know, to make things more fun, I guess," Sam said with a shrug. "I didn't have anything to drink though. I think watching Rory and Jaye make out sober was a much smarter idea." That last part might have come out without him thinking very hard about it.

She blinked. "You watched what? Um, why? And what's the big deal about two girls kissing anyway?"

"Well, um." Sam tried to think of the best way to put this. "Jaye apparently has a thing for watching guys kiss, so she and Rory kissed in exchange for having guys kiss for her. Did I mention that nearly everyone was drunk?"

"Yes on the drunk, and ohmigod, did you kiss anybody?" Dawn stared at him, fascinated.

Sam looked at Dawn and realized that he probably wouldn't be able to lie effectively with her staring at him like that. "Yeah. I got talked into kissing Anakin. He's one of the workshop teachers, I think."

"I haven't met him yet," Dawn said, still staring. "Did you like it? Have you kissed guys before? Is it different from kissing a girl?"

"Sort of, no, and I really don't know," Sam answered. "I didn't not like it; he was a pretty good kisser. But no, I've never kissed another guy before. Not that I've kissed that many girls either," he added. "Anakin was more...forceful. And there wasn't as much of a height difference as I'm used to."

"Huh." Yeah, it was going to take Dawn a minute to process that. "I guess I never really thought about height being an issue for you. But I guess it would be, because you're so tall. Maybe you should stick to taller girls?"

She was absolutely not thinking about stretching up on her toes to see how they'd fit. Because that would be Wrong.

"I don't know about that. That would kind of limit the girls I could hang out with. And even my limited experience has shown that all the best girls are shorter than me."

And he really wasn't thinking about how easy it would be to pick Dawn up to get them to be relatively the same height. Because that would be wrong too.

"Sam," Dawn said seriously, "I hate to tell you this, but most of the world is shorter than you."

That got a laugh out of Sam and his player, omg.

"Okay, but that doesn't make my statement that much less true. Girls who are my height are kind of scary."

Bel nodded in greeting to Sam, suddenly a little glad that since Sam and his brother were in the class, suction cups instead of real arrows might not be such a bad idea after all.

Sam nodded back at Bel, before tentatively moving a little closer. "Hey, do you know a guy named Blair?"

"Yeah," Bel said. "He's a good kid. Why?"

"We have a workshop together, and he came to talk to me to defend your honor," he explained, smiling. "I think I explained well enough that he doesn't need to worry, but I figured you might want to know."

Bel couldn't help but smile. "Yeah, sounds like him," he said. "Blair's one of the reasons I changed sides. He actually talked to me and worked on convincing me to think for myself instead of just following orders."

"He definitely struck me as the kind of guy who can convince anyone to be good and nice, if through nothing more than contamination. He was surprisingly pleasant for someone threatening bodily harm," Sam said, laughing lightly.
