Archery Workshop #2, 5/30, Danger Shop, Afternoon

The Danger Shop is set up like an outdoor archery field this week, with fifteen targets, fifteen bows, and fifteen quivers of arrows. The arrows, the students will find, are tipped with suction cups. Off to one side is Miho, lounging in a lawn chair with an umbrella. On the table next to it is the sign-in sheet. An incongruous freestanding blackboard is set up next to her, with the words Beginning Archery. Shoot the targets. Leave when you are done. written on it.

Miho gets up, takes up her own bow and a suction cup arrow, and demonstrates for the class by shooting at the first target in the line. Bullseye. Then she returns to her seat, picks up her glass of lemonade, and watches for any errors in form she'll need to correct.

"I haven't met him yet," Dawn said, still staring. "Did you like it? Have you kissed guys before? Is it different from kissing a girl?"

"Sort of, no, and I really don't know," Sam answered. "I didn't not like it; he was a pretty good kisser. But no, I've never kissed another guy before. Not that I've kissed that many girls either," he added. "Anakin was more...forceful. And there wasn't as much of a height difference as I'm used to."

"Huh." Yeah, it was going to take Dawn a minute to process that. "I guess I never really thought about height being an issue for you. But I guess it would be, because you're so tall. Maybe you should stick to taller girls?"

She was absolutely not thinking about stretching up on her toes to see how they'd fit. Because that would be Wrong.

"I don't know about that. That would kind of limit the girls I could hang out with. And even my limited experience has shown that all the best girls are shorter than me."

And he really wasn't thinking about how easy it would be to pick Dawn up to get them to be relatively the same height. Because that would be wrong too.

"Sam," Dawn said seriously, "I hate to tell you this, but most of the world is shorter than you."

That got a laugh out of Sam ~~and his player, omg~~.

"Okay, but that doesn't make my statement that much less true. Girls who are my height are kind of scary."

"Really?" Dawn asked, lining up for another shot, then taking it. "Why?"

"Well, all the tall girls I've met have been really aggressive," Sam explained. "Like the extra height comes from extra testosterone which makes them think it's okay to jump me in an isolated spot in a motel hallway. Um, that might have been an example."

Dawn giggled. "Sounds very random."

"It definitely was," Sam replied, laughing lightly. "Dean seemed to enjoy hearing about that one more than I enjoyed experiencing it."

"I bet." Dawn fidgeted. "So, how'd your date with Molly go?"

Sam shifted his weight a little, thankful that he was still holding his bow, and had something to do with his hands. "It was all right."

Well, that told her nothing. She played with the arrow in her hand. "Just all right?"

Nope, not at all happy Molly and Sam wouldn't become a couple. Honest.

"Well, I had a good time," Sam said. "We went to J,GOB and got to just sit and talk, which was nice. But I kind of got the feeling that I wasn't making a good enough impression to get a second date."

He looked at Dawn, wondering what she'd think of that. She had been the one to suggest Molly and him getting together to Dean, after all, and he really hoped she wasn't upset that it hadn't exactly worked out.

"You didn't make a good impression?" Dawn wasn't really surprised about that, since she'd talked to Molly, but she was still confused by how that happened. "But you fight demons and ghosts! You're sweet and fun and cute. I'd be really impressed!"

There was no way Sam could keep from grinning at everything Dawn had said. "Thanks," he said. "If that's how you feel, it's too bad I wasn't on a date with you."

Again, with the speaking without thinking first. This was getting to be a bad habit.

"Er..." Oh, was that the floor? "Maybe?"

"I'm sorry," Sam said quickly. "I just meant...it's not very often that I meet someone who thinks I'm sweet and cute and isn't freaked out by the whole demon hunting thing. And happens to be really sweet and pretty herself," he adds quietly.

"I know about fifty girls back home who would have kept you really busy," Dawn said, then smiled at the rest of what he said.

"I don't know if negative gossip is being spread about me, but really, I'm pretty content with the idea of one girl at a time. Fifty might be a bit much," he said teasingly.

"You dork," Dawn laughed. "Any particular one girl?"

It was a minor miracle, but this time Sam managed to stop and think before he opened his mouth. "Maybe," he said, staying nice and vague. "I still don't know what to do about Molly."

Dawn rubbed at the sudden tightness in her breastbone. "Have you talked to her? You could give it another chance, or you could forget about it and just be friends."

"I'm thinking that the friends option might be the way to go. But I suppose I should talk to her about that first, huh?"

"Yeah. It's good to know what she's thinking--you might have just read her reactions wrong."
