Archery Workshop #2, 5/30, Danger Shop, Afternoon

The Danger Shop is set up like an outdoor archery field this week, with fifteen targets, fifteen bows, and fifteen quivers of arrows. The arrows, the students will find, are tipped with suction cups. Off to one side is Miho, lounging in a lawn chair with an umbrella. On the table next to it is the sign-in sheet. An incongruous freestanding blackboard is set up next to her, with the words Beginning Archery. Shoot the targets. Leave when you are done. written on it.

Miho gets up, takes up her own bow and a suction cup arrow, and demonstrates for the class by shooting at the first target in the line. Bullseye. Then she returns to her seat, picks up her glass of lemonade, and watches for any errors in form she'll need to correct.

"It wasn't lame," Dawn patted him on the arm, "it was a very funny wee joke. A jokette. And, if I was a person with detachable body parts, it could have even been true, and wouldn't that have been a weird conversation."

"Er, not unlike this one. Oops."

"People think I'm cranky all the time," Bel said by way of explanation. "I'm trying not to be. But I'm not very good with the joking. We didn't do much of that back home."

"I could teach you!" Dawn volunteered gleefully. ~~Yes, Bel should be very afraid.~~

"How would you teach me?" Bel asked~~, not realizing how afraid he should be~~.

Dawn thought about that while she lined up her arrow for another shot. She frowned when it missed the center of the target and decided crossbows were easier.

"Well, you'd have to watch some funny movies, maybe some comedians, to find out what was funny, then there could be practice quips and jokes, like a training wheel kind of thing. I might have to call in a specialist for that," she said, wondering if Xander would help.

"What movies do you recommend?" Bel asked. He tried another shot himself and actually grazed the target this time.

"Try putting more of your weight on your front foot," Dawn suggested, then said, "I guess it depends on what kind of funny you want to be. Do you want to be witty and snarky and sarcastic, or do you want to be kind of goofy and klutzy?" She glanced over at him. "Witty and snarky and sarcastic is much more suave."

"Suave, definitely," Bel said. Vain, him? Nah. He altered his stance as Dawn suggested and tried another shot. This one hit the outer ring of the target.

"Yay, better!" Dawn smiled at him. "Um, then you want to check out ~~James Bond~~ some James Bund, the Double Oh Seven Eleven guy. He's suave and very quippy as he fights off the bad guys. Um, Wendy the Werewolf Stalker is pretty good for that, too, even if they get a lot of the supernatural stuff wrong."

Bel nodded. "I'll give it a try. I don't think I have to be funny, but it might make people think I'm less cranky. Even if I don't think I'm always cranky."

"Then why do other people think you're always cranky?" She asked.

"Comes with the demon package, I guess," Bel sighed. "My first instinct is to fight."

Dawn nodded. "But isn't your real first instinct to kill people? Just do what you do to subdue that, maybe?"

Bel smiled ruefully. "It's pretty hard sometimes, but I try to control it and think of the people who have faith in me."

"And, well, speaking as someone who was high on the demon target radar, I've got to say that I'd rather have you cranky and not so demony than demony and happy." She looked down at her feet, "and I'm sorry for that, because it means you're kind of stuck. But still? Being a victim gets old."

She patted him on the arm again. "We need to fix this. Um, do you watch soap operas? Because this other guy I knew was totally addicted to Passions..."

Bel coughed. "Never heard of it."

"Really?" Dawn smiled at him. "Because it really gave Spike something to do with all the spare time he had once he gave up eating people and trying to figure out how to kill Buffy. You might want to check it out."

"Spike?" Bel echoed. "I met him here before. We didn't get along very well, even though we were both supposedly on the same side then."

"I don't think Spike really gets along very well with anybody," Dawn admitted, "but why not you in particular?"

Bel hesitated. "Um, probably because Angelus and I were friends," he said. "He may have been jealous."

"But Spike hates, er, hated Angel, and I didn't think he liked Angelus much, either," Dawn said, a bit confused, since Spike had tended to rant on the subject. "Unless there's dimensional stuff going on that made that not true?"

Bel shrugged. "I didn't bother to get into the details. He seemed to get along with Angelus but didn't like me at all. But that was awhile ago, before Angel got his soul, and Spike left town."

"I still can't believe Angelus was here," Dawn shuddered. Buffy had kept most of it from touching her while it was going on, but she'd overheard some stories. That Bel had been friends with him, well, it was a reminder to be careful.

"And I'm really, really sorry I missed Spike," she looked back at her feet. "It would have been nice to see him again, even if he did call me stupid nicknames."

Bel blinked in surprise. "But he was evil," he said. "Why would you want to see him?"

"Because he treated me like a person, instead of the slayer's dumb little sister. Also, he taught me to steal and told me scary stories. He was fun." He'd also given up his life to save hers, but wow, so not telling anyone here that part.
