Detention, Depths of the Castle, Monday

Morning had broken in Fandom, and another day in detention was about to begin, the same as every other day.

For the moment, things were as quiet as they probably ever got, while everyone was still resting on their cots, women on one side of the magical black cloth barrier, men on the other. Soon, those who had managed to sleep would be woken by the ever-cheerful voice of Dolores Umbridge coming from the loudspeakers, ordering them to rise. The barrier would disappear, and whatever bland, tasteless substance they were calling breakfast today would appear instead. After that, those in detention were free to do whatever they wanted ... if they could find anything to do that didn't break one of the island's rules, or that could be done while trapped away from everyone else.

But really, the days of those in detention weren't that slow. Soon enough, visiting hours would start, and there wouldn't be nearly as much boredom then.

It's bland, it's tasteless, and there's questionable moddable meat products in it, but it'll keep you going. No dying unless Umbridge orders it!

Florida slid cautiously out from under her cot and looked around. Carefully, she edged towards the table, snatched some food and ducked under said table to eat it.

As he ate, Calvin asked Hobbes what he thought today's mystery meat product was, but he didn't get a response.

That was alright though. Hobbes didn't really talk much these days. Or move. Or do anything other than sit there, really. Calvin should probably take him to a vet when he had the chance.

Jonothon had a bit of a routine worked up, these days. After a few years in this bloody hole, how could he not?

His routine, of course, generally consisted of watching other people eat, and then silently thanking himself that he couldn't.

Given that Wolf Den had served the same type of basic food, Goose had learnt to build up a resistance long before he had been thrown into detention.

It didn't mean that he enjoyed it though but when the alternative was to go hungry, he could deal with it as best he could considering the circumstances.

Liara picked at her food.

She'd eat it - she always did. Right now she was just indulging herself in the image of flinging it biotically at the next person to come in and order her to eat it.

It wasn't as if Elphaba was purposefully staging her own hunger strike, she just refused to eat whatever it was that had unknown bits of meat in it. At least, she tended to do so until she couldn't stand the hunger any more.

So she sat there, her face shallow and showing the fact she'd refused to eat for several days. She stared at the food, as if she needed to acknowledge it was there to make not eating it more of an act of will.

Hanna poked a fork at her breakfast, obsessively inspecting it for anything dangerous...or poisonous. After quite some time, she determined it was safe enough to eat. This was the daily ritual of a girl in a perpetual state of paranoia.

Sookie poked at her breakfast, per usual. She wasn't feeling hungry -- she rarely did -- though she'd probably eat eventually.

If she didn't eat, she was too tired to stay awake against what happened in her head.

It was practically genius, how they managed to make oatmeal have the exact texture of paste without any corresponding flavor. Jack all but licked his bowl clean anyhow, and looked around hoping someone would be willing to swap his (possibly rancid, possibly not really pork) bacon for a second bowl.

Zoe worked her way through some of her food, and kept an eye out for anyone who might still be hungry to share her leftovers with. It was a strange kindness, giving them something that didn't taste very good, but she'd be damned if she was going to let anyone be hungry while she could help it.

April opted to go without breakfast today, and instead made a fun game out of seeing what shapes she could cut her food into.

Eventually she managed something that looked a lot like Indiana. Huh, check that out.

Wyatt scowled at the breakfast. He'd refused to eat yesterday but he knew he had to keep this strength up in case there was somehow a chance to escape, so he forced himself to eat today.

A stream of very profane Japanese tumbled from a figure one on of the cots, and Dojima only sat up long enough to flip off the loudspeaker before pulling her pillow over my head.

Alex wolfed down his breakfast without really tasting it. Not that there was anything to taste. Sometimes it helped to be a teenage boy with a bottomless pit for an appetite, but man, he would have killed for a Pop-Tart.

Maybe Ultimecia had succeeded. Time had no more meaning. Time had stopped. Time was compressing here, into this single moment. Rinoa was served breakfast. Every morning. It was the same morning. She was in a recursive loop and no one could break free of it.

Under her skin the place where magic should be itched. She was still a Sorceress; she could no more stop being one than she could stop breathing. But the power was tied off, away from her. It was like missing a limb. One that called out for you, day and night, that ached ...

She didn't want food. She wasn't going to starve to death. She doubted she could. She poked at the mystery sludge on her plate and wondered if she was dead. Had no one told her?

Everything seemed very far away.

If Zayne knew what gruel was or grues were, he'd have a solid comedic guess as to what the food he was eating actually was. But he didn't. So he didn't. Instead, he just ate as little as possible (in case it was tainted) and tried to will any remaining hunger away with the Force.

He wasn't good at doing that, of course, so just as always he had to eat more than he would have liked.

Stark sat picking listlessly at the food in front of him. He ought to be used to this sort of life by now. It always came back to this. Locked in a room with no escape and no hope.

"Flavor," he said softly to no one in particular. "I miss flavor." Don't say that too loud, Stark. Someone might hear you and give you what you ask for.

There really wasn't much going on with Jamie that was considered "chatting". For the most part he was sitting in the corner and drooling quietly to himself.

Occasionally he would mutter something about the girl who knows too much but other than that...

This was the worst time of day. This was the time of day that Jono had learned long ago to keep his head down through. To not speak unless spoken to.

... Hell, to just not speak at all, if he could help it. Not difficult, when forming words required the conscious focus that it took to project his thoughts outwards in the shape of words in the first place. But sometimes, it was tempting to say things that he'd inevitably end up regretting, later.

Granted, he didn't regret those things all that much, no matter what state they tended to leave him in when they were done.

Sookie never ate dinner on the days when Raven visited. She didn't even talk anymore, or offer to help anyone. She didn't even seem to see.

It would take hours before she came back. She sat quietly against the wall, hugging her knees and trying to remember what was real, and what wasn't.

Half of my comments are being marked as spam, and then other ones seem to be going through with no trouble at all. Has a solution to that been found, yet? This journal is a member of the community, so you'd think that LJ wouldn't flag it, but...

Oh! And while I'm thinking about it, a few more questions because I like to keep you guys busy!

1) Are the inmates here in detention able to hear radio broadcasts as well?

2) Jonothon communicates with telepathy. Does this mean that he can only verbally communicate with the other inmates, because of the barriers that are set up to keep the Loyalists safe when they come down to torment the people who are being held down here?
