Detention, Depths of the Castle, Monday

Morning had broken in Fandom, and another day in detention was about to begin, the same as every other day.

For the moment, things were as quiet as they probably ever got, while everyone was still resting on their cots, women on one side of the magical black cloth barrier, men on the other. Soon, those who had managed to sleep would be woken by the ever-cheerful voice of Dolores Umbridge coming from the loudspeakers, ordering them to rise. The barrier would disappear, and whatever bland, tasteless substance they were calling breakfast today would appear instead. After that, those in detention were free to do whatever they wanted ... if they could find anything to do that didn't break one of the island's rules, or that could be done while trapped away from everyone else.

But really, the days of those in detention weren't that slow. Soon enough, visiting hours would start, and there wouldn't be nearly as much boredom then.

[OCD is up, have at it!]

"Stop!" Bobby said sharply, when he noticed Liara wandering a little too close to his secluded corner.

Liara paused, and looked towards the source of the noise.

Well, okay, maybe 'paused' was not the right word. 'Jumped'. Yes. Jumped. "...What?"

"Not safe over here," he warned her. Liara might have noticed a chill in the air already; if she got any closer, the temperature would drop even more, until it wasn't something any human could stand for long. Although... it could be different for- whatever she was, Bobby supposed. Still, he didn't exactly want to risk it.

"Why not?" she wanted to know. She was used to eccentric behavior from the people here already, but this was a new one.

She didn't quite feel the chill yet.

"The ice," he gestured to, well, himself, and the ice that spidered out against the wall where he leaned against it. "Fire's not the only thing that burns."

Sixty years from now and she'd have some joke prepared - Shepard's influence.

As it stood, though. "Ah," Liara said. "I'm... sorry. I will remain at a comfortable distance."

"It's okay," Bobby said, trying for something reassuring. "You're new." Well, she could've been here for weeks for all he knew, but new enough that he hadn't seen her before now. "You didn't know."

Liara considered taking that as a hint and... leaving.

"Do you want to talk instead?" she said instead.

She thought it was a terrible idea the moment she said it. She was not terribly good at talking.

"Maybe for a little while. If you're okay with it." When his usual conversational partners were either half-crazy or only existed in his head, normal conversation was sometimes hard to come by.

"Okay," Liara said. "I-- what would you like to talk about?"

She was doing an awful lot of talking today and she wasn't sure she was doing it right.

"Could start with names, I guess." Bobby shrugged. "Bobby. Iceman, they used to call me. I'll let you guess why."

"My name is Liara T'Soni," Liara said, sticking her hands under her arms to keep from reaching out and giving that human greeting she'd learned. "And I suppose it has something to do with all the ice...?"

"Got it in one," Bobby nodded. "T'Soni. French?" he guessed. No, she didn't look human, but that meant... very little, in Bobby's experience.

Liara looked mildly confused. "I think my translator just glitched."

"...I'll take that as a no, then," Bobby decided. "Not from around here?"

"I am not from this planet, no," Liara said, rubbing the back of her neck. "I come from Thessia. You... probably haven't heard of it."

"Can't say I have," Bobby agreed with a nod. "Is it nice there?"

This was, he realized, an utterly mundane sort of topic considering their circumstances.
