Detention, Depths of the Castle, Monday

Morning had broken in Fandom, and another day in detention was about to begin, the same as every other day.

For the moment, things were as quiet as they probably ever got, while everyone was still resting on their cots, women on one side of the magical black cloth barrier, men on the other. Soon, those who had managed to sleep would be woken by the ever-cheerful voice of Dolores Umbridge coming from the loudspeakers, ordering them to rise. The barrier would disappear, and whatever bland, tasteless substance they were calling breakfast today would appear instead. After that, those in detention were free to do whatever they wanted ... if they could find anything to do that didn't break one of the island's rules, or that could be done while trapped away from everyone else.

But really, the days of those in detention weren't that slow. Soon enough, visiting hours would start, and there wouldn't be nearly as much boredom then.

[OCD is up, have at it!]

"I was just wondering," Liara said, pausing awkwardly on half the words, "if maybe I could... try to unlock more of your potential strengths...? If... it might help."

Now there was an interesting prospect, and the thought of it had Jono tilting his head at her, almost birdlike, as he mulled it over.

//How would you go about that, luv?//

It was tempting.

"Our... telepathy--" She was using the word because she'd heard humans use it before, but it still sounded awkward and unwielding to her own ears. "The melding," Liara corrected, which sounded much better. "It allows us to explore thoughts, emotions, memories... including genetic memory. I don't know how your mutation works-- and I am not very experienced-- but it could drag up something, at least."

She fiddled with her hands.

//And anything would be better than... than nothing, I suppose,// Jono allowed, nodding faintly. //Though there are some memories you wouldn't want to stumble across, tucked away in my head, luv. Would that become a problem?//

"I don't know," Liara said truthfully. She pushed the fingers of one hand down a little with her other hand - it was a nervous gesture. "I am only 45 years old, and I haven't really done this outside of training."

Jono blinked a bit at her age- he'd only turned twenty-one all of yesterday, and he would have taken her for younger than him, at a glance- and then reminded himself that she wasn't exactly from around here. She could be more than double his age if that was how it worked, and what he thought of the matter really didn't matter at all.

//... Would you know how to stop, if you stumbled across anything you couldn't handle?//

He was well beyond being concerned about himself. But she was still young, idealistic... sane. He wouldn't want to put her at any sort of risk, if he could at all help it. And his memories? He remembered as vividly as though he was still reeling from first being wounded, just how it had felt when his body had torn itself to shreds.

"I think so," Liara said. She made a little circle on her palm with her thumb. "I should be able to control the process."

It was strange to have someone ask her for her ideas as if she were an adult when all the asari she'd ever known treated her like the child she was.

It was funny, wasn't it, how being trapped in a waking hell could make equals out of just about anybody?

//... I'd be willing to give it a go. Shallowly, perhaps. Make certain that we're both comfortable with it before trying to dig too deeply.//

Liara nodded. Her nervous gestures slowed somewhat. "We could try it... tomorrow, perhaps," she said. "If you are sure."

//Tomorrow,// he agreed, nodding faintly as he watched her relax. //We're not going anywhere before then, I'm certain. Take your time, luv. Make certain you're ready. I can be patient.//

Liara nodded. "Thank you," she said.

For giving her a chance, even if she wasn't sure she was up to it.

"Would you mind if I stay here for a while?"

He was... comforting.

Jonothon shook his head just a little, settling back against the wall that he'd been seated against.

//Not in the least, Sunshine. Your company is welcome any time.//

She was a step up from the raving lunatics and the visiting Loyalists. Easily.

"Thank you," she said again, feeling like there was a lump in her throat, and reached carefully for his hand a moment later.

There was a twist in Jono's chest as she reached for him, just the barest flicker of blue dancing through his flames. But he relaxed again as her hand found his, and he nodded, just slightly. This was okay. This was comfort that they both needed.

His fingers closed around hers, and he couldn't help but think that if it was possible for him to smile, he'd at least be making some effort to do so.
