Detention, Depths of the Castle, Monday

Morning had broken in Fandom, and another day in detention was about to begin, the same as every other day.

For the moment, things were as quiet as they probably ever got, while everyone was still resting on their cots, women on one side of the magical black cloth barrier, men on the other. Soon, those who had managed to sleep would be woken by the ever-cheerful voice of Dolores Umbridge coming from the loudspeakers, ordering them to rise. The barrier would disappear, and whatever bland, tasteless substance they were calling breakfast today would appear instead. After that, those in detention were free to do whatever they wanted ... if they could find anything to do that didn't break one of the island's rules, or that could be done while trapped away from everyone else.

But really, the days of those in detention weren't that slow. Soon enough, visiting hours would start, and there wouldn't be nearly as much boredom then.

Calvin hadn't exactly been good at interacting with girls people girls even before he'd ended up in here, but Hobbes waved at her...after Calvin reached across to help him do that.

Cassidy waved back at him.

"At least it doesn't look as gray as it did yesterday," she said softly, pointing at the food she was not eating. "Would he like the rest of mine?"

Calvin thought about it a moment before shaking Hobbes's head. "No, he's full," he said. "Tiger's don't like mush."

Tuna fish sandwiches, that's what they liked. Not that Calvin had had any to give him for a long while.

Cassidy nodded. "I'm not exactly fond of it myself, so he has very good taste."

Calvin spooned up a mouthful of mush then let it slop back in his bowl. "I don't think anyone likes twice-boiled zombie brains," he said, almost by reflex, it was the kind of thing it had seemed more important to say back when Hobbes was... more talkative.

She shook her head, even managing a ghost of a smile. "I believe you're right. I bet that they would make quite a big mess if we were allowed to use them to decorate the walls. But then they would probably stink."

Calvin nodded. "Only thing that smells worse is Zorkon mucus."

"You have," Spaceman Spiff told her. "We've been trapped here by their High Queen."

"Their High Queen is awful, then," Cassidy said firmly. "I guess that means that they're bad guys, too, then?"

"The worst," Spiff assured her. Not in the way Britta was the worst either. "The old High Queen was better. Less capricious."

Calvin hadn't been on the island very long before gaining a new appreciation of Miss Wormwood. Not that he'd really been lucid long enough afterwards to get the most out of it.

"Any one would be better than this High Queen," Cassidy said quietly. "I didn't know the last one, but she had to have been less awful and cruel than this one is."
