Detention, Depths of the Castle, Monday

Morning had broken in Fandom, and another day in detention was about to begin, the same as every other day.

For the moment, things were as quiet as they probably ever got, while everyone was still resting on their cots, women on one side of the magical black cloth barrier, men on the other. Soon, those who had managed to sleep would be woken by the ever-cheerful voice of Dolores Umbridge coming from the loudspeakers, ordering them to rise. The barrier would disappear, and whatever bland, tasteless substance they were calling breakfast today would appear instead. After that, those in detention were free to do whatever they wanted ... if they could find anything to do that didn't break one of the island's rules, or that could be done while trapped away from everyone else.

But really, the days of those in detention weren't that slow. Soon enough, visiting hours would start, and there wouldn't be nearly as much boredom then.

"They would have hurt you more if you had tried to," Cassidy said gently. "But I appreciate the thought. I wouldn't have wanted you to get hurt because of me."

"I'm... not terribly good at talking," Liara admitted. "But I'll try. What does your mind wander to?"

"My world... the things I remember before I was here." She frowned. "What happened to cause me to be in detention."

She smiled faintly. "Books. I think about books a lot."

"You like books?" Liara asked, a hint of excitement in her voice. "I've always enjoyed them."

Cassidy nodded excitedly. "Oh yes. I love reading anything I could."

"Did you ever read anything about archaeology?" Liara asked. "Those were always my favorites. Back home."

"I'm not sure what that is, I'm afraid? Can you tell me about it?"

"Archaeology," she repeated earnestly. "It is the study of the people who came before us-- and unearthing what they left behind."

She had Cassidy's complete attention.

"Oh. That sounds fascinating."

"We have been excavating relics by this ancient species called the Protheans," Liara said. She seemed to perk up as soon as she broached the topic. "The Protheans are responsible for so much of the technology we use today, but barely anything is known about them. It is terribly interesting."

Cassidy was becoming more and more interested in what Liara was saying.

"So, you're able to study things that they once owned to learn more about them?"

"Yes," Liara said, beaming. "It is a fascinating field of study." You'd made that clear already, T'Soni. "I... I'm sorry, I don't mean to babble. But all the things we've learned from them-- all the things we can learn. The ability to harness the power of the stars, the wisdom to guide us over interstellar distances in an instant..."

"No, don't apologize," Cassidy rushed to reassure her. "I'm enjoying listening. Until I was put in here, I was always trying to learn new things."

"I could tell you about the Protheans," Liara said, after a brief pause. "I am not yet an expert, though when we leave... when we leave I intend to become an archaeologist."

"I was on an internship before I came here," Liara said dreamily. "The digsite - you should have seen it! So many Prothean artifacts, so much data..."

"So, tell me all about it, please? It keeps me focused when you're telling me about all of this. What are Protheans?"

"All we know is that they came before us," Liara said earnestly. "They built the Mass Relays, which we use to cross interstellar distances. They communicated through beacons that we have yet to be able to activate properly. And they built the Citadel, which is now home to the Galactic Council. It's a true feat of engineering."
