Detention, Depths of the Castle, Monday

Morning had broken in Fandom, and another day in detention was about to begin, the same as every other day.

For the moment, things were as quiet as they probably ever got, while everyone was still resting on their cots, women on one side of the magical black cloth barrier, men on the other. Soon, those who had managed to sleep would be woken by the ever-cheerful voice of Dolores Umbridge coming from the loudspeakers, ordering them to rise. The barrier would disappear, and whatever bland, tasteless substance they were calling breakfast today would appear instead. After that, those in detention were free to do whatever they wanted ... if they could find anything to do that didn't break one of the island's rules, or that could be done while trapped away from everyone else.

But really, the days of those in detention weren't that slow. Soon enough, visiting hours would start, and there wouldn't be nearly as much boredom then.

[OCD is up, have at it!]

Normal enough when you were chatting with a bloke whose face was made of fire, at least.

//You and me both, luv,// Jono offered. //But at least you're not missing out on anything, if you don't actually need to eat it.//

He wasn't entirely certain he was convinced. Most people needed to feed themselves, after all. But still and all, he figured that if she was starving to death, she'd probably at least eat something when the mess they called dinner actually rolled around.

"I guess I've never tried starving to death," Rinoa mused. "Maybe it would work. But then someone else would have to be the Sorceress."

Maybe it could be their turn. She was so tired.

"Do you ever wish you could die?" she asked Jono. "Just to have the option."

//If I had the option?// Jonothon shrugged a little. //I don't have it. I'll be around until the end of bloody time.//

It was a nice, roundabout sort of answer, anyhow.

//I'm not in any hurry to shuffle off this mortal coil, at any rate.//

"It'd be peaceful," Rinoa said. "That's what everyone says. But how do they know? They're all just guessing. Maybe it's even worse than what we have now."

She stared at the walls and tried to think of something, anything that wasn't the pain of the missing half of herself.

"I wonder if you had a nice birthday party."

//If we go by radio, it was perfectly lovely,// Jono offered. //I think we had Italian. You were there.//

Radio had been feeling especially cruel this morning, at least so far as he was concerned. But if he could use it to paint a hint of a pleasant yesterday that had never been for her to hold on to...

"Squall was, too," Rinoa said softly. "Maybe we all sat and had some wine and ... If ... if he's not here then he's out there somewhere, right? I bet he's watching Angelo."

Jono had no doubt heard countless stories of Rinoa's beloved dog. And Knight-almost-boyfriend. Sometimes people put pictures in her mind of them both dead, but she didn't believe that. She couldn't. It was all she had to hold on to.

//I bet he's looking for a way to get you back, right now,// Jono murmured, nodding faintly. //And I'm certain Angelo is with him.//

He'd heard the stories, though he wouldn't know either to see them. Still, if hope that they were alive was what kept her going... He'd let her keep it.

"You'd like Angelo," Rinoa murmured. She liked talking about her puppy. Those were happy memories, untouched by this hellhole. "She was ... so tiny when I got her? A-and ... Dad was mad. But she's a good girl and she's really smart. So he couldn't say no because she was so cute and didn't misbehave or anything."

She scooped up a spoonful of the horrid sludge and decided she would try her best to eat it. For Angelo.

//I think I'd like to meet her someday,// Jono murmured, watching her as she started to eat. Good. Now he would worry just slightly less. //Who knows? Perhaps I'm a dog person and I just never knew it. She could be th'one to convert me.//

The food tasted ... just as bad as it looked. But she had to eat, because Angelo needed her. Okay. So she put another spoonful in her mouth.

"I didn't know I was a dog person," Rinoa admitted. "There was just this tiny fluffball in a pet shop and I fell in love with her big eyes. She sleeps on my bed."

Slept, not sleeps, but she was letting herself get lost in memory.

//And nothing beats the unconditional love of a pet?//

Jono... had never had a pet. But people said things, apparently they were wonderful, and so that's what he was going to hang on to. That unconditional love.
