Detention, Depths of the Castle, Monday

Morning had broken in Fandom, and another day in detention was about to begin, the same as every other day.

For the moment, things were as quiet as they probably ever got, while everyone was still resting on their cots, women on one side of the magical black cloth barrier, men on the other. Soon, those who had managed to sleep would be woken by the ever-cheerful voice of Dolores Umbridge coming from the loudspeakers, ordering them to rise. The barrier would disappear, and whatever bland, tasteless substance they were calling breakfast today would appear instead. After that, those in detention were free to do whatever they wanted ... if they could find anything to do that didn't break one of the island's rules, or that could be done while trapped away from everyone else.

But really, the days of those in detention weren't that slow. Soon enough, visiting hours would start, and there wouldn't be nearly as much boredom then.

[OCD is up, have at it!]

"N, no, no, no, no, nononononononono," Sookie moaned, her eyes clenching shut.

The light in her vision flickered, Jason's voice warping between a laugh and a scream.

She wasn't strong enough to flight very hard, anymore.

"Go away!" she rasped, her voice weak.

"Come out and plaaaaaaaaaaaaay, Sookie," Raven sang out, worming her way into Sookie's mental landscape even further. No, no, no, she couldn't escape to somewhere nice, she'd been bad and she had to be punished.

The sugar Sookie'd been pouring turned black and began to move, cockroaches pouring out of the cup and the bag and skittering across the counter. Several fell from the counter and began to move around the floor, some beginning to crawl up Sookie's legs.

Sookie screamed -- both the child in her mind, and the nineteen year-old girl huddled on the floor. She screamed and screamed, until she went hoarse, choking out sobs.

Gran laughed at her, her teeth rotting and falling out of her head. "Your parents left on purpose, you know. They don't want you.. They never wanted you."

Sookie's own mind was turning, as it always did. Raven only needed to give it the inclination to shift.

Raven clapped her hands in glee. It only took a little push, and then Sookie's mind could do just as awful things to herself as she could. It was all too easy. And soooo delicious.

"I will take care of you, Sookie," she whispered, settling down beside her on the floor and petting the other girl's hair. "I can make it all go away. You just have to be good."

"No," Sookie mumbled, her face buried against her knees. "No. I'm a good girl already. No."

She knew the answer. She'd almost left a few times before -- it would be easy to obey.

But it would be worse. She remembered. At least she had Bobby here. They left her alone, here, except for these daily visits.

"I used to be bad," Raven said, sending little pleasant tingles of comfort as her fingers moved over Sookie's hair. She still had the scars on the bank of her hands from the quill; she hadn't been allowed to heal them to prove her obedience.

"Just do as you are told, and it all will stop. All the pain, all the fear. You will be free, like me. Let me take you out of here, Sookie."

"I won't leave here," she mumbled, shaking her head. "You're not free. None of us. Least here she doesn't bother me."

"Oh, Sookie," Raven sighed, giving her hair a tug instead of the gentle strokes. "There is no reason to suffer like this. And you do not want someone else to be harmed because of your stubbornness, do you?"

Her gaze swept the room. So many choices, but she knew who was most special to Sookie. She couldn't hide it from an empath, not as weakened as she was.

That got her attention, yes. "You stay away from him," Sookie said, soft but clear as she jerked her head up. "Fuck with my head all you want, but you leave him alone."

Raven gave her a delighted smile. She liked playing with this Sookie better. "What will you give me to leave him alone?" she crooned.

"Another day to torture me," Sookie said, immediately. She wasn't going in that easily.

"But I can do that any day I want," Raven said. "I want something better. Tell me about your fears. What are you most afraid of?"

She could try to dredge them up herself if she wanted, but it was even more fun to get someone to admit them themselves.

"Spiders," Sookie replied quietly.

She wasn't, especially. She was more of a everyone-I-love-dying kind. But she could deal with spiders.

"Liiiiiar," Raven sing-songed. "Lying means you are bad, and you will have to be punished more. Tell me what you are really afraid of."

"One time my brother got bit by a spider and we all thought he was gonna die. That scared me. Spiders scare me," Sookie said, defending herself weakly.

Jason's spider bite hadn't been scary because of the spider, though.

Now this was getting better. "No, not the itsy bitsy spiders," Raven said, walking her fingers along Sookie's arm. "Where did it bite your brother? Did the skin turn black and die?"

"It was like a bruise," Sookie said, stiffening. "It was really scary, okay. I'm afraid of spiders."

"Like a bruise," Raven repeated. Bruises were fun. Just the lightest touch upon them and they could cause so much exquisite pain.

"But there was poison, was there not?" she said. "Creeping into his blood, spreading to his heart? Did he get a fever?"

"He was delirious," Sookie answered, closing her eyes. She didn't want to think about this anymore -- she didn't want to think about anything anymore.

"Did he thrash and moan? Did you think he was going to die? Did you pray to your god to save him?" Raven whispered. She tried to force the image into Sookie's mind, her brother feverish and whimpering as the poison worked through his system. Red lines of infection spread from the bite, squirming across his body like worms. And then the bite itself, swelling, bursting open as hundreds of little spiders spilled from it.

"Stop it!" Sookie screeched, thrashing out. She knew she couldn't actually hurt Raven, but it didn't matter. The images were in her mind now, and they weren't real, they weren't real, they weren't real but nothing was real and everything was real and this was how every day went, now, every day until her last day.

With an incoherent sob she pressed her face into her hands, breathing hard, and tried to bring herself back. The trouble was, she couldn't remember where she would be coming back to. Her mind begged for retreat, away from the nightmare of Jason and the spiders, but to come back to this waking nightmare was unthinkable.

Raven's head fell back as she closed her eyes and moaned softly in pleasure as she soaked in Sookie's despair and fear. "Yesssss," she hissed, little shivers of ecstasy shaking her body. Some part of her fled from what she was doing, but the demon part of her, even controlled as it was, relished it.

Sookie kept herself in a ball, shaking in terror and pain. It should be normal, now, but nothing was ever going to be normal again. Normal had once meant Gran and Jason and going to Merlotte's and taking naps in the sunshine and listening to everyone call her Crazy Sookie.

Well, wouldn't they eat their damn words now.

When Raven finally came back to herself, she leaned over Sookie's huddled form and pressed a kiss to her cheek. "Thank you," she said. "For that, I will leave Bobby alone."

She paused a moment, then just had to add, "Today."
