Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The island was still thankfully, blissfully normal, so fingers were crossed that the picnic would go off without a hitch.

The weather was pleasant enough - sunny, but not so hot that people would melt outside - and all the decorations had been safely pulled out of storage. There were tables and chairs set up with blue and yellow balloons, a table for all the information the new students would need, and enough food to probably feed two islands. It was time to welcome some new folks, everyone!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Soooo.

Ulysses had sort of kept his handwavy distance during the wait for the shuttle as well as the ride over. It wasn't that he was antisocial (... okay he kind of was that too) but just that he'd been busy trying to hide that he was clearly hallucinating, because that was the only explanation for the shit he'd seen in the lounge, and also, what the fuck kind of airport lounge spiked its water with hallucinogenics, anyway?

But he was here now, name tag fixed to his chest, and sort of squinting at his surroundings through his sunglasses.

... Trying to check if the hallucinations were over, yeah. But no one needed to know that.

Any concerns that Tisarwat might have had about her first night here being restless and frought with concern over what she might be missing with the Provisional Republic of Two Systems, of not being with her Bos and the rest of the crew of Mercy of Kalr, had already faded. She'd been given plenty of food for thought even before the...shuttle (and she was still reluctant to really even call it that) left that terrible little Station, and now that they were finally on the island, she had even more to process. She was going to sleep like a baby tonight, no matter how quiet, no matter how unfamiliar the bed, if only because her racing mind was already getting a bit worn out.

But she found a tag with her name of it there on the table of information and, in noting the action of those around her, she set down her fishbowl for a moment so she could peel off the nametag and smooth it out on the breast of her uniform jacket, picking a little experimentally at the edges, concerned that the adhesive might leave a residue when she removed it. If it did, she'd have to clean it herself, probably, since she didn't exactly have a Bo that would hop right up to the task to fix it.

She felt a slight pang, already missing them, but, at the same time, she looked around a little and reminded herself that, while it was different, there was no lack of potential here. Picking up the fishbowl, checking to see that the fish inside was still doing alright, she may have found herself clinging to it a bit, just to have a hold on something familiar.

Keyleth had druidcrafted a little garland of flowers in autumn colors, to sort of frame her nametag, and another couple of little flower garlands to drape decoratively over the antlers on her circlet, and another that she had in her hands to offer to this Elisabeth Scrivener person who was supposed to be her new little sibling.

She still felt a little bit like she hadn't exactly given Wayne the best first impression last time around, and she was going to do better this time, okay?

Well, there were benefits to not having hands with which to write and stick things on oneself, weren't there? And this seemed like a good enough spot from which to await his... sibling.

Mae had been signed up for the sibling program! It was even possible Mae had signed herself up for the sibling program. She was prone to occasional flights of ridiculousness like that.

She picked up a nametag, scrawled "MAE" across it in her signature messy-but-legible scrawl and slapped it right onto the center of the "not" sign on her t-shirt.

She would not realize until much later that this might cause confusion. For now, she was perfectly pleased with her nontraditional-but-still-easily-visible nametag location choice.

Sabine pretty much stood out already, but that didn't mean she'd catch the eye of the person she was actually looking for.

No, that was why she had a brightly colored sign with Illyana's name on it. Left no questions on that front!

Evie was feeling very confused. She had wandered up to these tables after she appeared and they had immediately asked her name and gave her a nametag of all things. She had tried explaining to them that this was not where she was intended to be, but they informed her that all of her information was in the lists and she would have to take that up with the Dean after the picnic was over.

So now, she was trying to find out who she needed to speak to in order to get back home but there was no reason to be rude and not at least look for the "Big Sibling" she was told she was assigned to.

Okay, so far, having a roommate seemed about the most normal, expected thing about this whole experience, and Ulysses was really damned grateful for that.

Even if he was sorta cocking his head at the list, mouthing his new roommate's name and hoping he was sounding out in his head even mostly correct.

Tisarwat had been taking in as much of the information on the tables as she possibly could, but, naturally, something like a Roommates list caught her attention especially.

Just the one? She supposed that was better than sleeping completely alone. She considered the name, then took a moment to locate the names of the people she'd met on the shuttle, and then finally looked around to see if she could spot someone with the nametag Evie, wondering what sort of person she might be, and also wondering if she should maybe try and go find the room right now so she could go and drop off the fish. Who wanted to lug a fishbowl around at a picnic all day? But Tisarwat already knew she probably wouldn't be eating anything, so maybe the fish would stay after all.

Knowing his luck would run out eventually and actually sort of hoping it would (things had been really quiet in 303 when Jason left; it was going to be even worse now that Yang was gone), Prompto strolled by the table with the room assignments to take a quick peak. He hadn't actually expected to see his name on their, so when he did, he sort of did a double-take as if he couldn't really believe it. Hey! He did have a new roommate this semester! He sighed with a sort of relief, knowing it would probably be an adjustment, but being alone in that room after this summmer....

He did double-check the room number, too, though, because who knew? Maybe there was another Prompto Argentum in the new batch, it was totally possible, but, no, that was still his room number and he had to grin as he read the name.

"Grog Strongjaw," he repeated, because, face it, it was just fun to say. "Now there's a name for you."

And so now he supposed he had to look around for someone with a fittingly strong jaw.

Hey now, some of them were perfectly valid role models! Or, at least doing their very best to be one.

Which was to say that yes, Karolina was here, sporting a nametag that said Guidance Counselor Karolina on it (no last name, but there was a small rainbow sticker instead), and curious to see what the new batch of people would be like.

Whatever. He looked impeccable, as always, and the sneer at the whole... picnic-with-children-ness of it all on his face was minimal. (Which was noticable, by anyone else's standards.) "Right, so is there an open bar..."

So help her, Amaya really had gotten to enjoy these things and was really looking forward to the start of a new semester to infuse something other than weekly dread into their lives, after the summer they'd all had.

The free food always helped, too, especially since she was actually pretty keen on eating meat again these days.

Mostly, though, she was playing a little game of Spot the Newbie and wondering if she'd have any of them in her class, while also keeping an eye out for any adult-type faces that might belong to her latest fledgling teacher that was supposed to be flying under her wing. And even though it hadn't happened in a while, she still sort of felt she should go check and see if anyone washed up on the beach first for that, before hitting up the picnic for it.

Rosa was...there. Leather jacket, arms crossed, faintly glowering. Business as usual, really, with the mild irritation of someone who was contractually obligated to at least make an appearance.

Which, to be fair, she probably wasn't. She was, however, spiritual obligated to be annoyed about her teacherly duties, even if the welcome picnic was always amusing as hell with all the dumb little wide-eyed newbies. She was already thinking about making bets on who might break down, who would be catching flies longest, and maybe even hoping for some kind of fight.

She was really surprised there weren't more wrought-from-misunderstandings-or-clashing-cultures fights as these things, honestly.

Wow, it had been a while, huh? And the truth was, Kennedy hadn't been back in Fandom more than maybe once or twice since that time a few years ago with -- well. That stone out in the preserve that occasionally brought the dead back, and that was not so much with the good start-of-term vibeyness. Though, to be fair, she'd had her hands full with training Slayers and running the security agency and her college classes and, you know, the occasional apocalypse.

But -- now that she and Willow were back in New York, she was a couple of years out of college, and the São Paulo branch of the whole Slayer operation had enough experienced locals to take over the reins -- she'd found herself at a couple of loose ends. Guess that was part of why she was back here again.

And okay, part of it might've been that she'd been climbing the walls without enough to keep herself busy, and driving Willow a little bit nuts, since the teaching gig this time around had been Willow's suggestion. Whatever. In any case, it was actually pretty good to be back and she was wandering around the picnic with her thumbs tucked through her belt loops and a half nostalgic, half almost-proprietary smile on her face as she took in the familiar sight of the school and the island at large.

She remembered the time, at the end of her last teaching stint here, where she and Tara had talked about feeling like they'd sort of outgrown this place, and that was a thought that was heavy on the bittersweet, but. Maybe she'd outgrown that feeling, too.

/Help, Red,/ she thought plaintively at Willow, and their private telepathic connection was easy for even her to make across dimensions, after years of practice. /I'm old now./

Kennedy got the sense of warm laughter bubbling up inside her head, and she grinned a little bit. /Oh, sweetie. I'll have a hot bath ready for your poor aching joints when you get home tonight,/ Willow sent back.

And if she spent the rest of the picnic grinning a little more broadly, well, listen, the implications beyond the 'poor aching joints' thing were good ones, okay?

Excuse you, Magnus was an amazing role model! If your role model was a super well armed dude who wanted to wrestle giant animals.

Like a fantasy Paul Bunyan or whatever.

Either was, he was there and even had a name tag stuck to his armor. Even though he didn't have a teaching buddy or anything. He'd still totally help out by confusing people.

Tony, with his coffee in hand, and looking tanned and relaxed from his little get away from this place, was there as well. He at the very least could be sort of considered a role model. Maybe not in the movies anymore, RIP Spidey 3.

But mostly he was just enjoying the picnic and keeping a careful eye out for anyone familiar.

Duke was here for the food.

He was not here to mingle with teenagers, so once he'd stocked his plate, he headed for what was clearly the adults' section before grabbing a seat and looking over the crowd.

. . . Okay. So this high-school-in-a-castle was definitely starting to climb his personal scale for weird.

Kitty, who was a great role model thank you very much, had kind of had a tough couple weeks with separation anxiety, so she was making a point of not carrying Lexi around with her everywhere today. Because she really couldn't do that when she was teaching.

Also because these picnics could very easily go weird and after this last summer she didn't trust anything, anyway she was here with something to drink and it was all fine.
