Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The island was still thankfully, blissfully normal, so fingers were crossed that the picnic would go off without a hitch.

The weather was pleasant enough - sunny, but not so hot that people would melt outside - and all the decorations had been safely pulled out of storage. There were tables and chairs set up with blue and yellow balloons, a table for all the information the new students would need, and enough food to probably feed two islands. It was time to welcome some new folks, everyone!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

That’s a neat trick, considering I don’t actually drink coffee. Or alcohol, really,” Liam pointed out dryly.

"Dammit," Beau grumbled. "Was it the food? Maybe it was the food."

Because you were delusional, Liam, to say something like that.

See, Liam? This was how people felt when you talked about yourself that way.

"The food that you're also eating," he pointed out. Pointedly.

"Shit."

Aaaaaand now Beau was going to just eye the food suspiciously, if only just because she'd have to concede he wasn't under the influence of something and therefore thought his extremely inaccurate opinion of her was actually true.

"Seriously," Liam reiterated. "One of the best people; hell, you're one of the best friends I've got here. I mean that."

"Aw, man, don't --" Beau glanced around a bit, looking slightly uncomfortable. "Don't say that. People are gonna think you have no friends or something."

"Not a lot that I trust, no," Liam said. JUST ACCEPT IT, BEAU, DAMNIT.

NO, THAT WAS DIFFICULT, OKAY.

Beau rubbed a hand over her face and sighed.

"Liam. Listen. I don't have a lot of friends either, but you're absolutely one of them. And I appreciate the sentiment. Just . . . don't make me out to be more than I am, okay?"
firstofitskind: (unimpressed)

Liam frowned at her. "What do you mean?"

Beau shrugged and kicked at an imaginary pebble in the grass.

"Just don't want you to set yourself up for disappointment. That's all."

She let everybody down eventually, she figured.

"Well, I'm a little insulted that apparently you don't trust my judgement, but other than that..." he shrugged. "You've listened when I needed to talk. You've hit me when I needed to do anything but talk. Haven't sold me out to your boss as 'that guy who keeps destroying gym equipment'..."

"I do trust your judgment," Beau objected, "on pretty much anything else. Just because I've done a couple of things that aren't totally shitty, I mean, I don't think that's enough to draw a conclusion."

Sorry, Liam. It was going to take more than one conversation to undo years of shitty parenting.

Liam was the kind of person who saved the life (multiple times) of a man who had tried to kill him (also multiple times). It was going to take more than one conversation to convince him Beau was some terrible person not worth the effort.

"I think it is," he said, firmly.

Beau held up her hands in a -- not conciliatory, exactly, not with the reluctance in every line of her posture -- gesture indicating that she'd at least let it go for the moment.

"And I'm not going to try too hard to change your mind," she muttered. If he wanted to keep thinking that, well, it was his choice, and she wasn't about overriding other people's choices for them. "Just . . . something to consider, that's all. Okay?"
