Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The island was still thankfully, blissfully normal, so fingers were crossed that the picnic would go off without a hitch.

The weather was pleasant enough - sunny, but not so hot that people would melt outside - and all the decorations had been safely pulled out of storage. There were tables and chairs set up with blue and yellow balloons, a table for all the information the new students would need, and enough food to probably feed two islands. It was time to welcome some new folks, everyone!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Ah-ha! See? Good thing he just didn't assume he was someone's pet or something and scoop him up, snuggling another student before you eve knew their name was just bound to be awkward.

It took Prompto a second, though, to solidify again after absoutely melting at that one little paw on his outstretched hand.

"Maybe we could make it so that you could wear it around you neck or something?" Prompto offered. "It can be pretty useful when you're running around meeting all sorts of people. They're mostly just to help your roommate and your big sibling find you..."

There was a pause, as Prompto second-guessed himself and realized that technically, just because the little dude was looking for a nametag didn't necessarily mean he was a student, he could just want a nametag.

"....assuming you are a student, anyway," he added.

"I am!" he said, his tail swishing once, twice.

That part was still rather new and interesting to himself, in all honesty. He'd never been a student before...

"My name is Kyubey," he added, with a beseeching sort of headtilt up at this helpful young man. "Do you think you could help me with my name tag?"

He didn't know it yet, but Kyubey's roommate wasn't even going to be around until Tuesday, so... ah well. At least sleeping in a common room wasn't weird when you were basically a cat.

Wait.

Wait.

Hold. Up.

This adorable little cat-thing that talked and was just one of the cutest things to ever exist was his little sibling???

Prompto needed another moment.

"Dude," he said, once that moment was had, "I can absolutely help you! In fact, if anyone's gonna help you, it should be me, because I'm your big sibling! The school always assigns a student who's been here a new student when they come in so that they can, you know, help them out with getting situated and comfortable and to figure things out. Because this place is a little weird, Kyubey," he said, to the talking cat-thing of mysterious origin, "I'm not gonna lie. But it's okay, I've got a ton of experience and I will so totally help you out with whatever you need. I even, like, work at the animal shelter here, if you find that you need something special, because, I don't know if you noticed, but most of the other students here aren't small and fuzzy like you, but don't let that bother you at all, everyone here is super nice and they're all going to love you and most people probably won't even think twice about it, one of my good friends has a face kind of like yours, too, it's not really weird at all!"

In all his rambling, though, Prompto did manage to grab a marker and a blank name tag, uncapped it and got it poised and ready to write, "Just hit me with that spelling, Kyubey, I don't want to mess it up."

And then, "Oh! And I'm Prompto," he took a moment to give a nice displaying gesture toward the nametag covering a few of the patches on his vest, "by the way. It's really nice to meet you, Kuybey. Where are you from?"

That... that was a lot of rambling and Kyubey took it in, unblinking.

"It's nice to meet you, Prompto!" he chirped, when Prompto had finished speaking. "I've come here from Japan!"

Which wasn't where he was from, precisely, but not an inaccurate answer either.

Kyubey leaned over to watch Prompto write, touching his arm, and yes, Kyubey's fur was incredibly soft. Softer than it looked, even.

"It's spelled K-y-u-b-e-y," he said, then twisted his head to look up at Prompto. "Where are you from?"

Softer than it looked?? But it already looked so soft! And Prompto had to grin a little to learn that, though he did hold back to natural instant to lift his hand and start petting Kuybey, because that still seemed like it would be kind of weird, but it also felt weird to sort of ask if it was okay to pet his new little sibling.

So he wrote down Kuybey's name as he spelled it, then held it up proudly as though for approval and tried to think of the best way for Kuybey to actually wear it that wouldn't end up in a nice patch of his nice, soft fur gone from trying to remove it.

"I've been there before!" he informed Kuybey proudly. "Tokyo actually reminds me a lot of where I'm from. It's a city called Insomnia, on a planet called Eos, which is, like, really far away, but it's not too different from Earth for some things. But it's also pretty different on a lot of others.

"Hey," he said, "if you're from Japan, do you like karaoke?"

Prompto, Japan was more than just karaoke and sushi, dude.

...but at the same time, you look at Kuybey and hear that he's from Japan and not instantly think of that adorable little carbunkle-looking cat-thing belting his little heart out, he dared you, because that would be amazing.

Kyubey had a terrible feeling of where this was going, he really did.

"My friends and I have gone before," he said, though he hadn't done any singing. It was just part and parcel of hanging out and hanging on and off of high school girls as they went about their lives.

"Do you like singing?"

Promtpto shrugged a little, grinning, and, with Kuybey's nametag finished, he drummed his fingers on the table a little in thought. He'd originally thought maybe he could repurpose one of his bracelets as a sort of leash for him, and put the nametag on that but they probably weren't long enough, his wrists were pretty small. But they did have a lot of extra nametags, probably just in case someone lost one or maybe just in case someone had an exceptionally long name, and so he started in on maybe folding them together and making little links out of them that they could hang the nametag on and then hang around Kyubey's neck.

It was the weekend of folding shit, apparently, but Prompto didn't seem to mind.

"Not, like, seriously or anything," he answered. "But it's fun. Especially karaoke. You know, they've got a set-up at the bar that's perfect for it, but no one ever takes advantage of it. Maybe this semester, we change that."
