Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The island was still thankfully, blissfully normal, so fingers were crossed that the picnic would go off without a hitch.

The weather was pleasant enough - sunny, but not so hot that people would melt outside - and all the decorations had been safely pulled out of storage. There were tables and chairs set up with blue and yellow balloons, a table for all the information the new students would need, and enough food to probably feed two islands. It was time to welcome some new folks, everyone!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Rosa was...there. Leather jacket, arms crossed, faintly glowering. Business as usual, really, with the mild irritation of someone who was contractually obligated to at least make an appearance.

Which, to be fair, she probably wasn't. She was, however, spiritual obligated to be annoyed about her teacherly duties, even if the welcome picnic was always amusing as hell with all the dumb little wide-eyed newbies. She was already thinking about making bets on who might break down, who would be catching flies longest, and maybe even hoping for some kind of fight.

She was really surprised there weren't more wrought-from-misunderstandings-or-clashing-cultures fights as these things, honestly.

"You know, if my high school teachers had looked more like you, I might have actually gone to class more often."

He wouldn't have. High school was terrible.

Hey, Rosa was only here to look miserable and laugh at the misfortune of poor, hapless children. Getting hit on by new teachers was not part of the deal.

She quirked an eyebrow at him, taking the moment to size him up with the sort of look that was very clearly and blatantly trying to decide if she should dignify that with a response.

"You wanna try that again?" she offered, because she was apparently feeling magnanimous today. "Maybe this time with something a little less gross?"

Duke raised his hands. "Sorry, been out to sea too long. Hi. I'm Duke. And I'm usually better at figuring out who'll be amused by the cheap pick up lines. My apologies."

Yeah, if his first thought was to try the cheap pick up lines on the person actively trying to put out the talk to me only if you hate your tongue vibe, maybe he probably should have just stayed out there.

"...Duke?" said Rosa, who clearly was not about to buy into the idea that anyone was actually ever named Duke.

What could he say? He liked the antagonistic ones. He just had to keep poking.

"Yes. Duke." He actually got that reaction a lot. "You're really kind of terrible at small talk, aren't you?"

He....wasn't wrong. On either account.

"You're really kind of terrible at reading signs," Rosa countered, "aren't you."

Definitely not a question.

Duke shrugged, wobbling his hand back and forth. “Sometimes.” He backed up a step. “Sometimes I’m just stubborn. Just tell me you don’t make fun of the students’ names, too.”

Oh, that was cute. He assumed she bothered even remembering half their names.

Actually, she had started to learn some of their names by now, and it was super annoying.

"I mean," she said, "if any of them were named Duke..."

She'd obviously have no choice in the matter, and they should probably take that up with their parents.

“Hey, I didn’t pick it. Served me well enough so far.” He raised an eyebrow. “And your name?”

Damn. Rosa was hoping to shake him before it got around to that point. She was really getting rusty.

She thought about giving one her many fake names, but this stupid island was just so small.

Actually, no. That could be fun, too. Then it just became a matter of which one.

"Emily," she decided. An oldie, but a goodie.

Duke gave her a measuring look. “You do not look like an Emily.”

He was mostly fucking with her, but it had the advantage of being true.

"Hey," said Rosa, "I didn't pick it."

Except the fact that she literally did.

"What's an Emily supposed to look like, anyway? My parents must have missed that memo."

"Like, 90% less biker chick. Don't get me wrong, full respect. But I'm guessing you at least usually go by some badass nickname."

"Anyone legitimately badass," Rosa countered, "doesn't need a nickname to prove it."

"Ah, so you're legitimately badass. Well, that makes all the difference."

Well, yeah.

She was literally teaching the class on it. Not that she cared to mention that; if it came up, she was just going to claim she was the shop teacher.

Sorry, Blackstone.

But for now, she'd just shrug. Because he wasn't wrong.

"Alright then. Emily. You find yourself in need of some, uh. Legitimately badass supplies, you let me know, alright?"

He was going to be so mad at himself when he found out she was a cop.

The word choice matched with that ever so subtle uh did sort of send her cop sense tingling. Not that it mattered around here.

"I'll be sure to come running. Duke."

Yeah, he was going to be pretty disappointed by that, too.

"See you around, Em."

And Rosa knew she probably should have left it at that, but she really couldn't help herself. She just did not get enough chances to just be good and bitchy anymore.

"Unfortuntely."

Duke was sure to provide plenty of those. And he was 100% going to be calling Rosa "Em" forever now, whether or not he learned her real name.

He laughed as he turned to go, offering her a thumbs up. "This'll be fun."

This was a woman who still almost exclusively referred to her own boyfriend as Tightpants.

She'd be fine.

Especially now that she could just think about taking that thumb and breaking it.

It was all about the little pleasure of life.

That was a step up -- his cop friend back home mostly pictured throttling him.
