Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The island was still thankfully, blissfully normal, so fingers were crossed that the picnic would go off without a hitch.

The weather was pleasant enough - sunny, but not so hot that people would melt outside - and all the decorations had been safely pulled out of storage. There were tables and chairs set up with blue and yellow balloons, a table for all the information the new students would need, and enough food to probably feed two islands. It was time to welcome some new folks, everyone!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Duke nodded along, then frowned. “Multi-what now?”

"Not important!" Magnus replied immediately. "So, what brings you to this island?"

Was it a good plot hook? God, be a good plot hook.

His wife had left him in a lurch outside of Rio with law enforcement and organized crime bosses from three continents on his tail, and Fandom seemed like a good spot to lay low.

“Needed a change of scenery.”

THAT WAS A GOOD PLOT HOOK.

"Well. There's some good scenery here. It's no secret moon base or anything, but it's okay."

Duke chuckled. “Well. I’ve got the wrong kind of ship for a secret moon base anyway.”

What with it being made for water, not space.

You'd be surprised, Duke.

"You've got a boat?"

He would be very surprised!

“The Cape Rouge, yeah,” Duke said proudly. “She’s docked in the harbor. You sail?”

"No? I think?" Look, he remembered it once. "Timelines are confusing. But it's pretty cool."

Someday Duke would get zapped through time and then thrown into another time stream by a supernatural barn, and he’d understand.

Now, he just assumed Magnus was a little too into recreational drugs.

“It is cool. You should swing by sometime. I’ll show you around.”

Duke was very proud of his boat. She looked like crap from the outside, but on the inside she had all the creature comforts and secret passages a smuggler could need.

"That would be super cool," Magnus agreed. "You let me know if you need any furniture made. I'm your man for that."

“That I will, buddy.” He might even, once he realized he was staying awhile. A ship’s state rooms could always use custom furniture. “So. Teaching. It fun?”

"It's pretty okay! My teaching buddy helps out a lot with making it fun." By grudgingly accepting his friendship.

"Your teaching buddy." Yep, Duke was assuming that was a euphemism. "That the, uh. Cara you mentioned?"

Excuse you, he was married. And Cara would probably kill him with her thighs.

"Yep! I don't think she's at this picnic, but you can't miss her. Blonde, wears a lot of red leather. Like. A lot."

Not helping the implication, huh?

Duke's mental image was highly entertaining.

"Blonde in red leather." Duke nodded. "I'll keep my eye out."

"And I'll keep an eye out for your cool boat." It better have a name. That boat better be named.

"The Cape Rouge." Of course it had a name. "Can't miss it. I'm pretty sure she's the only working boat in port right now."

"Ooooo!" Magnus said loyaly. You've earned his loyalty until money was involved, Duke. Be happy. "Do you live there ooooor..."

That was the story of Duke's life.

"Why would I live anywhere else? I'm not a sucker."

"Yeah!" Magnus held up a hand for a high-five to celebrate that.

That was adorable. Duke returned the high five with a laugh. "Magnus, I like your style."

"I get that a lot! I'm rustically hospitable." It was right there on his character sheet.

"That makes you sound like something from a furniture catalog. Just so you know."

"Yeah, but it fits."

Duke tsked. "Can't argue with that." His description might have included the term 'bear', but hey, he didn't like to assume.
