Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The island was still thankfully, blissfully normal, so fingers were crossed that the picnic would go off without a hitch.

The weather was pleasant enough - sunny, but not so hot that people would melt outside - and all the decorations had been safely pulled out of storage. There were tables and chairs set up with blue and yellow balloons, a table for all the information the new students would need, and enough food to probably feed two islands. It was time to welcome some new folks, everyone!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Kennedy?" Anakin called.

It could be a doppelganger. Around here, it was best to check.

It absolutely was, and Kennedy would agree that it was a good idea to check.

"Anakin?" She broke into a grin at that. "That is you, right?"

He could've been a doppelganger too! Though no doppelganger could probably pull off that level of Dramatic. Didn't hurt to make sure, in any case.

"It's me," Anakin confirmed, smiling. "Rumor has it that you're teaching now?"

"Apparently it's that time again," Kennedy said with a chuckle and a small shrug. And look, that was way more of a self-effacing smile than she'd ever been capable of at 17. "Will thinks I don't know what to do with myself if I'm not telling other people what they should be doing."

Willow wasn't wrong, not remotely.

". . . have you ever stopped teaching?"

"Noooooo," Anakin admitted with a sheepishly smile of his own. "But I'm also the dean now?"

"Oh, wow, double duty." Kennedy shook her head for a second, her expression very much a it has been a while one. "But hey, congrats! Family doing okay and everything?"

"Yes," Anakin said, smiling. "Though Juliet and Christopher are far too old now."

"We're all too old now," Kennedy said with a wry laugh. "I totally get how you feel now when you see some of us come back as teachers. No, but seriously, I'm glad you're still here. Kinda reassuring, you know?"

Anakin laughed. "I don't get called reassuring very often," he admitted.

"Hey, it happens sometimes," Kennedy said brightly. "Besides. As scary as some of the kids think you can be, you always had our backs when things went really bad. I haven't forgotten that, and it makes me feel a little bit better about how well the kids are gonna pull through all the weird this place can throw at them."

She was always going to worry about the students here. That was just how she rolled.

"This summer was especially trying," Anakin said. "The island went through some kind of demented summer vacation-slash-reliving all of the terrible invasions...thing. Not the vampires, but pretty much all the rest of them."

"Yeah, I got some of that from Kitty," Kennedy said, frowning. "Thought I recognized a few of the things she mentioned. Must've been a wild ride. Are the kids holding up okay after that?"

She paused.

"As much as they're willing to let on. You know."

And that was punctuated with a wry smile, because she knew how well her group of friends had done with admitting when they weren't okay.

"Well, three of them--" he knew who did it, yes, "--completely covered the shuttle bus in glittered origami art," he said, sounding annoyed, "so I think they'll all make a full recovery."

The annoying little jerks.

You know what, Kennedy wasn't even going to try to hide her surprised little snicker at that.

"Fandom glitter tradition, still alive. Good to know," she said, looking horribly amused.

"I haven't heard of it leading to kissing in a while, but I'm also a teacher and am deliberately not that interested in the students' personal lives."

"God, I'd forgotten about that," Kennedy said in a tone of mild horror, and also shame because how did she forget something like that? "Not to say I'm not all with the caring about their personal lives like that either, but it was such a thing before."

Anakin laughed. "It's gotten a little more mellow over the years, this summer aside."
