Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The weather was lovely, the newbies had survived their shuttle, and yes, all the holes in the lawn from graduation had been filled and covered with new grass so everything looked normal and pretty. Well, pretty, at least.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Breq had picked up some food and found a seat in the shade, watching people walk past her. She tried to assume a neutral yet not completely blank expression, but found it hard to know if she succeeded or not.

Well. The school seemed to have gone all out with the food spread, which shouldn't have surprised Astrid too much if she considered how they went all out with the glitter on that banner. She wondered if the janitors cursed the school constantly, having to sweep up the sparkly remnants after the bus shuttled off toward the island.

And it was an island, too, near an ocean she'd lived near before, but far on the other side, an ocean she found much colder than the one back home, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

The food wasn't a bad thing, either. When she felt no one was really looking, a few things that would keep well, like rolls or maybe a sandwich, pieces of friut and definitely anything pre-wrapped, might have been slipped into her bag for later. If everything else was an indication, she wasn't exactly going to hard up for food here, but old habits from never knowing where your next meal might come from didn't fade easily.

Then she filled a plate up with a modest amount of whatever looked best and found her way to a table off to the side a little, a good one for people watching, her sketchbook out and open for anything that might strike her particularly strong between eating and just soaking it all in.

Jason had made it to the food tables, at least, before his knee just noped right the fuck out of this nonsense and he found himself hobbling over to the closest table and grabbing a chair. He’d just be here for the forseeable future, thanks.

Norman wasn't shying away from the crowd today, which was actually something of an accomplishment. He'd parked himself at an empty picnic table with a plate of food and a can of Coke, and was looking around at the new faces. And sort of ignoring the gremlin ghost who was standing on the table in front of him, alternating between pretending to be able to eat his food, and trying actively to block Norman's view of the rest of the picnic. Since he was mostly see-through, it wasn't all that effective, really.

Norman rolled his eyes, seemingly at nothing, and then turned a look toward the ghost.

"Do you mind? I'm being social."

Well. He was existing in the same area as other people. That was kind of the same thing.

Peridot didn't care much for the food at all, and she didn't wear clothes, so going without a shirt wasn't exactly a new and novel development either. But she did have a Pumpkin, who she was throwing a stick for, in the hopes that her little friend would run and fetch it.

Pumpkin, for the most part, was just looking at the stick, and then looking back at Peridot, giving a confused little whine until Peridot went to fetch the stick herself before throwing it back the other way again.

This could continue for a while.

Oh, Sidon loved the welcome picnic, so full of fresh promises and plenty of new introductions! He drifted between snagging bites of food from the table here and there to drifting around the picnic, looking for faces new and old to chat with, and enjoying the general atmosphere of the event. True, it never took much to make Sidon happy, but being around people enjoying themselves was certainly one of his favorites. Bright toothy grins for everyone!

Octavia was here strictly to eat her fill of the food, and to take some of it back to the apartment with her. Sure, life on the island was different from life on the ground in that food was plentiful, but the scavenging mentality was a hard thing to shake. Especially when you thought it unwise to do so.

So she was loading up a plate and also the bag slung over her shoulder, occasionally pausing to examine something or other she hadn't seen before.

On one hand, this whole thing set Sabine on edge, and getting shuffled off to some school on a planet she'd never heard of made her nervous for a lot of reasons. But at the same time, it wasn't an airport or a Portalocity lounge somewhere, so she'd deal with it at least long enough to get some real sleep.

She had her helmet on, mostly so she could take pictures through it without being obvious, and was off to the side somewhere, leaning against a tree and watching. This was just really not how she thought this day would go.

Jaylah found a seat where she could reasonably keep an eye on the crowd, finding so many people around him a little uncomfortable without familiar faces. At least there was food available.

That was a total plus.

Manfred was starting to get a headache, which was not the best sign, but he was going to have to deal with it, since this place was unlikely to stop being...this place. So he'd put his sunglasses on to at least cut down the glare of the sun, and was helping himself to the free food. Even with the headache, he was still a growing boy with a healthy appetite.

Rey always tended to come to these, even if she just sat off to the side. There was, after all, free food, and old habits died hard, so she had a seat at a picnic table with a plate, watching the festivities.

So it turned out Theron was kind of terrible at this whole being sociable thing, but there was free food, and he was a growing teen.

Hannibal was only teaching at the community center this term, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to show up and meet people.

And completely avoid the food in favor of his own insulated bag of sandwiches and thermos of coffee.

Peter was...sort of teaching? More "having movie night somewhere outside his apartment", really. But it would probably be good to get out and meet people.

He found himself a glass of lemonade and looked around to see anyone he knew or might want to know.

A gremlin had tripped him up along the way and run off with his shirt. He wasn't going to ask.

Every welcome picnic that passed gave Khadgar a growing feeling of amazement at how long he'd been in Fandom, and how much he'd grown accustomed to the idea of not being able to go home. The pleasant weather had him in a good mood and he quickly got a plate of food before walking around, taking in the sight of everyone and seeing if there was anyone he hadn't talked to in a while - or at all yet!

One of the problems of being short when there's not a waist-high box to hide behind? No idea what was on the snack table.

So Beaker had his hand up along the table, feeling carefully for something to eat that wasn't that bowl of pudding he'd already found. Eww.

Also, sorry anyone who'd wanted to eat pudding.

He hadn't the foggiest what time he'd returned to Fandom in. Had it been as long for it as it had been for him? Then perhaps looking for Cosette or Anders or... who else had been left by the time he went?

Perhaps that was futile.

Whatever it was, he sat down on the grass and stretched his legs out. It was far colder than he'd gotten used to, but it was still, in many ways, a very nice day.

Dante's first picnic without being a student - almost felt like he wasn't supposed to be here.

But fuck that. It was a nice day, he was taking his shirt off and getting some of that school pizza. And so he did, lounging with his legs stretched across a picnic table somewhere near the center.

The picnic had a nice spread, but Aloy had been hunting this morning in a bid to stave off restlessness. She'd been here a year now, or close to it, and she didn't like it.

So she sat in the shade, eating roasted rabbit meat off the bone while keeping an eye on everyone else.

Hey, Peebee was here for the eye candy. And the food. And the need to satisfy her curiosity about what new kids were showing up this time.

She was stretched out under a tree with a plate of food, not all the way out on the periphery of the picnic area but not too close to the center, lazily nibbling away while she observed the crowd.

And also working on a new research project on her omni-tool, because while she recognized by now that trying to make sense of Fandom's weirder events was futile, it was also a fun academic exercise, or would be until she got bored of it anyway.
